New Approach For
Home Economists
Georgia Extension Home
Economists assume the role as an
off-campus faculty member of the
University of Georgia who takes ad-
vantage of continuous training to
develop herself to be a better teacher
and an understanding friend to the
people with whom she works.
As a faculty member she offers
non-credit classes in all areas
of homemaking for adults and
youths with a
desire
to
"continue th-
eir education"
in an informal
way.
These
classes are fr-
ee from the re-
quirements and
pressures of
study for aca-
demic credit.
The classes are taught by the Ex-
tension Home Economist or a

qualified person she secures as an instructor. Advance registration is usually requested as many classes are limited in number because of space.
In the past, Extension Home
Economists have worked with the homemakers in community clubs. The same educational program was given to all groups regardless of the needs and interests of the club members.
Now the Extension Home Economist meets with the County Extension Home Economics committee and they plan the programs and activities that will be offered in their county. The programs are planned with all socio-economic groups in mind.
The purpose of this is to offer
some activities from which all homemakers can benefit. The educational programs must be in a place where all homemakers will feel welcome. Many of the programs require several meetings to complete the training offered in a given area.
Examples of these are: Nutrition, Home Furnishings and Food Preparation, Clothing construction, Furniture Refinishing and Money Management.
Georgia has 214 Extension Home Economists who are members of the National Association.
The following Home Economists received Distinguished Service Awards at the Denver meeting: Mrs. Mary Reece, Mrs. Elizabeth Brantley, Mrs. Jean Jones and Mrs. Crawford Farmer.
The Extension Home Economist has one of the greatest challenges of any profession - that of working with the families of our Nation to make and to keep their homes the cornerstones of Democracy.

Ga. Egg Dealer
Violates Law
A Winder egg dealer, Tim Segars of Holly Poultry Farm, has been enjoined from operating or doing business as an egg dealer by the Barrow County Superior Court.
Legal action against Segars was sought by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin following an investigation which revealed Segars was operating as an egg buyer without proper licensing and bonding by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and that complaints from egg producers indicated he owed in excess of $20,000 for eggs
Now is the time for pesticide
operators to prepare for the changes in regulations.
Heretofore, the department has regulated pesticides from the stand-
point of product registration, labeling and chemical analysis. To stop here has simply left some loopholes in enforcement.
Products now can be properly formulated and labeled in compliance with the law and then can be incorrectly diluted in the field causing either lack of control if the solution is too weak or residue
problems, hazards to field workers, and plant damage if applied too strong.
Farmers who will apply pesticides
to their own land or an accomodation to their neighbor's land
will not be subject to the license requirements of this act. The law
does require that those in business of applying pesticides for hire be licensed.
Every applicator must also have
an operator's license or maintain at
malin in a sealed plastic container and pack for shipment.
An analysis of fish in ponds or raceways may require a visit to the farm by someone from the Lab. Such a visit will be undertaken only after prior laboratory examination offish.
In addition, a detailed written history including name and address, amount of water in tank or pond, number of fish and species, feeding schedule and type of fish, any antibiotic or chemical therapy, change in color or swimming ability offish, duration of mortality and number of fish lost, should be included with each group of fish sent to the laboratory.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
My daughter is getting married in a few months. I would like to give her a gift that is needed, useful, original and that can be treasured. What better way or gift could she receive than a lovely scrap book with sayings, do's and don'ts, recipes, ole wives tales, home remedies for the cold, corns etc., any helpful household hints or any bits of news for a new bride that can make her role as "Mrs. Housewife" easier? If the readers of the BULLETIN will send me the letters I will make the book and title it "Ideas of Georgians and their Friends".
Mrs. VaLeta T. Hudson 1733 Ricardo Valdosta, Georgia 31601
Dear Editor:
I have raised decorator gourds but can not get them to keep (dry) without rotting or mildewing. Can someone give me some hints? I plan to grow some giant pepper gourds and would like to know how to cure them and make dippers and birdhouses.

Can you tell me where I could obtain redfin pike (pickerel) and Jackfish (chain pickerel) for stocking my pond?
Mrs. A. H., Vidalia
These fish are not produced in hatcheries for stocking ponds, nor are they recommended for pond management as they are not desirable for good fish balance or fishing. They can be obtained, however, by fishing for them with artificial spinning lures in flowing warm water streams, such as the Cannochee River, Suwannee River, Satilla River, Alapaha Swamp and smaller streams which feed into these rivers.
****
Are there any restrictions on selling homemade preserves and relishes in a small privately
owned grocery store?
Mrs. M. H., Savannah
As there are established laws and regulations concerning the processing, storage and sale
of foods, the processing and merchandizing of products in the home are not permitted.
Should you desire to obtain facilities other than your home, we would be happy to assist
you concerning adequate facilities.
****
Can you identify this leaf?
D. C., Waverly Hall
It is difficult to tell exactly what kind of leaf specimen you submitted. It appears to be
one of the flowering crabapples, but we cannot tell which species or variety. As there are so
many hybrids and crosses sold in nurseries now, it is almost impossible to determine the
identification of ornamentals.

Due to Dampness under our house, there is a mold in places. During the wet weather, little flying bugs get inside the house from there. Can you tell me what can be done for this mold?
A. C., Carnesville
Though the insects you described briefly are very likely not associated with the mold or the high moisture conditions, they could most probably be controlled with any of several household aerosols available at most chain stores. To eliminate the mold, you could use a good ungicide preparation such as copper naphthenate, applying according to directions. Plastic sheeting used to cover soil in confined areas does help considerably to reduce moisture and odor.

Unlike the sugar maple, the red maple is a soft-wooded tree. It doesn't grow quite as large either, reaching only 50 to 70 feet in height and seldom is wider than 11/2 feet in diameter. The leaves are simple, opposite, about 4 inches in diameter and usually three-lobed, but sometimes five-lobed.
The twigs are orange-brown to red with a terminal bud but do not give off a disagreeable odor when bruised as does the silver maple. The bark is smooth and gray on young trees; shaggy or scaly dark brown on mature trees.
The branches of these trees are relatively brittle and decay soon takes place in exposed wounds unless they are treated. The wood being softer makes a poorer bed of coals when used in campfires.
Old dye books claim that a hotwater extract of the bark can be combined with ferric (iron) or aluminum salts to yield an ink or a dye. The extract gives a cinnamon color on wool and cotton when used with aluminous bases; a perfect and fast black when used with iron sulfate.
Red maples are easily spotted during the fall with their brilliant hues of red foliage.

use including:
(1) effects of drift (2) proper weather conditions (3) plant damage (4) illegal residues (5) effects on wildlife and water c. Proper calculation of concentrations d. Insect indentification e. Protective clothing required f. Pesticide container disposal The law provides the framework through which the new Federal Evironmental Pesticide Control Act of 1972 will be cooperatively enforced along with the Environmental Protection Agency. This federal law will require the certification of everyone who is applying "restricted use" pesticides.
Both the state and federal laws will provide for the establishment of standards and procedures to be followed for the safe disposal of pesticides and their containers. Georgia is now cooperating with EPA in order to be ready to accept delegation from EPA of the responsibility of enforcing the certification of pesticide applicators at the state level. All provisions of this federal bill will not go into effect for four years.

I have oil on my pine floor. How can I remove it? Mrs. D. B., Savannah
Assuming that your floor has no finish on it, we have these suggestions: 1. See paint dealer and ask him. 2. Use a solvent cleaner. 3. Try scrubbing with a strong cleaner such as Dirtcx. 4. Get tri-sodium phosphate, read directions and try it. 5. Use a chlorine bleach or wood bleach on the spots if they are in the wood. The wood and condition of U could make a difference with the results you may get with this method. If using it in spots, it may leave spots in the wood where it is used. We recommend that you sec your paint dealer, however, before you attempt removing the oil yourself as he is in a much better position to advise you.

I dug some scuppernong white grape vines from the woods and planted them. They produced purple grapes. Is this possible?
K. M., Dahldnega According to Mr. C. D. Spivey, Extension Horticulturist, the vine under which these plants were dug could be those that produce white grapes. However, the seedlings that you dug and transplanted and turned out to be purple is not unusual. Such seeds from a white fruit such as muscadines or scuppernongs will produce purple grapes if enough of these seeds are planted. In other words, you can get both white and purple from a vine that produces only one color of fruit.
****
I have never been able to grow trees from apple seeds and have tried several times. Can it be done?
Ms. V. M., Norcross The seeds of apples require an after ripening process that many other seeds do not require for germination. This is a stage in the development which goes on at a low temperature, generally 40 - 41 degrees. A cigar box is of adequate size to stratify many apple seeds so that they can be after ripened. Simply put a layer of moist sand in a cigar box, fill it about one-half full, sprinkle your apple seeds that arc taken from well matured apples on this layer. Fill the box with more sand and place in the refrigerator, keeping the sand moist, for about six weeks. At this time, they will began to crack and show evidence of germination. Now the seeds are ready to be planted in the soil, not more than one inch deep. As you may not know, when you plant seeds of any named variety, you do not get the same. When this tree starts fruiting, it will revert back and be a seedling. However, this can be grafted to the improved variety that you desire.
