Forest Farmers
Keep Informed
The forest farmer, whether he owns 40 acres or thousands of acres, must keep abreast of latest developments and techniques affecting his tree farming activities. These include such things as taxes, markets for his products, new research findings, etc. To help keep him informed, the Forest Farmers Association publishes the Forest Farmer Manual as a public service.
The 1972 Forest Farmer Manual, entitled "Forest Farming in the Environmental Age," covers the
entire gamut of environmental factors that concern today's forest farmer. For example, it gives an up-to-date report on open burning regulations and their significance in each southern state. It also reports on pesticide regulations affecting forest farmers. Other articles include instruction on how to manage for various species of wildlife, rural zoning,

identification of insects, attacking southern forests, and how to detect disease damage to shade and forest trees. In addition, the 1972 edition summarizes current timber capital gains tax procedures and their significance to timber growers.
The manual is now considered the encyclopedia of southern forestry by those who seek the latest forestry "know-how". More than 20 outstanding authorities in the forestry profession contributed articles in the current issue, which consists of 120pages of text and illustration. Many colleges and universities in the South use the manual as a forestry textbook.
Apart from articles concerning the environment, the new edition covers the many basic factors involved in managing trees and forests. The forest farmer will find answers to such questions as:
Will I profit from leasing my timberlands?
What sources of financing are open to me?
Where can I get professional assistance?
What records must I keep for tax purposes?
Am I eligible for social security as a forest farmer?
Moreover, the manual publishes the most extensive list of timber markets and woodyards in the South yet compiled. The manual is available for purchase at $7 per copy, including postage, from Forest Farmers Association, 4 Executive Park East, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30329.

guaranteed to protect her trees from any insect or disease problem for the next ten years. After digging around one tree the foresters found that the miracle cure pallet was actually a six inch piece of broom stick wrapped in tin foil! The crook only charged her $4.00 per tree but she had 1 1 7 trees. True story. There are many other unbelievable and true stories which happen.

The cotton industry is still of tremendous value to the state of Georgia. In addition to the nearly $100,000,000 of new wealth generated by the production of cotton, the state's economy is stimulated to the extent of a half billion dollars. Nearly 400,000 Georgians get all or a substantial portion of their income through some phase of our state's cotton industry.

Talk Tax Relief
The Joint Senate and House Agriculture Committees of the Georgia Legislature met at the State Capital last week to hear proposals and discuss' possible means of reducing ad-valorum taxes on homes and farm lands in Georgia:
The Joint Committee voiced it's concern over the growing burden placed on farmers and homeowners and started studying additional ways to raise the necessary revenue for school programs in order to give some relief on proptery taxes. Another meeting is planned next week to further study the difficult problems and to formulate legislature to be proposed in the 1973 sesson of the legislature.

4 Irg. red apples, unpeeled
1 cup baked ham, diced (or any cooked ham)
1/4 cup raisins 1/4 cup chopped pecans 2 tbls. brown sugar 2 tbls. butter
Scoop out the apples, leaving thick enough shell to hold stuffing. Mix 1 cup of the chopped apple removed from shell with the remaining ingredients. Fill the apple cavities with the stuffing. Place apples in a baking dish, and bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 45 minutes. While apples are baking, baste them often with the following glaze:
GLAZE:
4 tbls. water 4 tbls. brown sugar
1 tsp. dry mustard 2 tbls. vinegar
In a saucepan mix all ingredients. Bring to boiling. Spoon the glaze over the baking apples.

APPLE FRITTERS (Over 100 year old recipe)
Make batter in preparation of: 1 cup sweet milk, 2 cups flour, a heaping teaspoon of baking powder, 2 eggs (beaten separately), one tablespoon sugar and one half teaspoon of salt. Heat the milk (do not boil). Add it slowly to the beaten yolks and sugar, then add flour and whites of the eggs. Stir all together and put in slices of good sour apples. Pumpkins are undoubtedly of American origin. Fragments of stems, seeds and fruit have been recovered from the cliff dweller ruins of the southwestern United States.
Fairy tales and legends from America and other countries contain reference to the pumpkin. There is the episode in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in which the ghost lifts his pumpkin head from the pommel of his saddle and hurls it at the fleeing Ichabod Crane. The pumpkin achieved a romantic high when one of its oversized brothers served as a golden coach for Cinderella. Peter the pumpkin eater also added to the legend by confining his wandering wife to a pumpkin shell.
Pumpkins are common to all parts of the United States, but their large-scale commercial production is limited to states where growing conditions are most favorable. Georgia is one of the main sources for pumpkins in the United States.
Almost any good, well-drained garden soil will grow pumpkins. However, they will not tolerate a wet, poorly aerated soil. The soil should be well supplied with organic matter.
Aside from the artistry of making a scary jack-o-lantern, pumpkins provide the makings of spicy pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread or muffins. Small pumpkins may be used for stuffing with meats and vegetables. In some European countries pumpkin is made into a delicious soup.
This member of the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, was so essential to one Thanksgiving in 17th century Connecticut that Thanksgiving was postponed until the molasses for pumpkin pie was delivered.

Cotton Ginners
(Continued From Page I)
Agricultural Calendar
costs that do not directly improve the service to their customers and can not be passed on to the customers in any way.
As a general rule the ginner serves as the first point of sale for all cottonseed and in many cases for the lint. If conditions were such that all the seed purchased by the ginner were of excellent quality this could be a profitable enterprise for him, however, when weather and harvesting conditions are such that cottonseed are of very low grade they become a liability to the ginner rather than an asset. The use of cottonseed at the present time is very limited and there is practically no demand for some of the products made from seed. One ton of cottonseed when processed will yield 954 pounds of meal, 303 pounds of oil, 514 pounds of hulls, 110 pounds of linters and 119 pounds of waste.
An analysis of Cottonseed Prices in Georgia and the Southeast prepared by M. Dean Ethridge, Assistant Professor, Department of Ag. Economics, University of Georgia covers a twelve year period 1959-60 through 1970-71. "It appears that, for the years recorded, cottonseed prices in the various locations have maintained a fairly consistant relationship among themselves, even though all of the prices often fluctuated widely from year-toyear. Over the 12-vear period, Georgia prices averaged 41 cents more per ton than did the prices for the Southeast as a whole," he says.
"One way to assess the "fairness" of cottonseed prices to the farmer is to examine the margin between these prices and the WHOLESALE prices of cottonseed meal and oil.
"In comparing the farm prices of cottonseed in Georgia with the wholesale price of cottonseed meal in Atlanta and with the wholesale price of cottonseed oil at all Southeastern mills it is seen that, over the period covered, the price margins have increased in an absolute sense for both meal and oil. Of course, this fact is not surprising, since all costs have gone up during the past decade. The more meaningful numbers are expressed as a percentage of cottonseed price. It is seen that the meal margin goes from 64 percent of the seed price in 1960 to 53 percent in 1971. The oil margin goes from 556 percent of seed price in 1960 to 509 percent in 1971. Although the margins fluctuate throughout the period, it must be concluded that they approximate a fixed percentage mark-up in each case. Certainly this is a common type of mark-up and does not lead us to conclude that the margins are unreasonable. Thus, it appears that farm prices for cottonseed in Georgia are at least roughly consistent with the wholesale prices commanded by its products."
Our ginners in Georgia are not only providing our cotton growers efficient service with modern equipment that turns out a quality product, but they have been doing it at less cost per bale for a number of years than the ginners in other states of the cotton belt.
In spite of the fact that this has been a real discouraging year for Georgia cotton growers generally, the ginners will be busy encouraging their customers to look ahead and plan for a bigger and better year in 1973.
