Animal Health Everybody's Gain
South Georgia livestock owners
still have not forgotten screwworms.
During bad years hundreds of
animals were infested. Livestock had
to be inspected daily, and those with
screwworms and wounds treated.
Screwworms were eradicated in the
Southeast in 1958-'59, where it was
estimated that they were costing
livestock owners $20 million a year.
It is still easy to remember
the ravages of hog cholera: 2,000
outbreaks in
1960-'61 alone.
Losses nation-
wide were then
estimated at
$70 million a
year. Georgia's
share, with
high occur-
rence,
was
disproportionately large. So we have
strong reason to feel good about no
hog cholera since April 1970, and
about recognition as a Hog Cholera
Free state in April 1971, after a year
without cholera. Nationwide the

program has made wonderful
progress, with only nine occurrences from July 1 to December 15. Recently we have had further breaks in Texas; however, optimism in expec-
ting all states to soon be Hog Cholera Free is justified, which will be a tremendous achievement, looking at the history of hog cholera which goes back to the 1830's.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture, livestock owners, veterinarians, Extension Service, market operators, and all of us who are interested in animals can be
truly proud of Georgia's record. Georgia was first to start hog cholera eradication measures. Our problems were many and difficult. Too often we led the nation in incidence. Measures developed here have been used in almost every state
with serious problems. Our success
pointed the way. Most of us have never seen foot-
and-mouth disease. Our last and
ninth outbreak since 1870 was in 1929. Measures to stamp it out were extensive and costly. Our American policy of not living with a disease that can be eliminated is basic to our livestock economy. Elimination
of Texas fever in cattle in the south made our present vigorous cattle industry possible. In 1917 around 5% of the cattle in the U. S. were affected with bovine tuberculosis. Eradication efforts have made it rare in cattle, and also in man. Georgia has depopulated cattle herds affected with bovine tuberculosis since 1958, now done as a national

Columnist Supports Bulletin
One of Georgia's leading columnists, Celestine Sibley of The Atlanta Constitution, recently expressed her views on the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. Mrs. Sibley has graciously consented to let us reprint her column in the BULLETIN.
Market Bulletin Is Needed
The Atlanta Constitution, January 14, 1972
The other day I sat in the House chamber over at the capitol and heard precedents cracking or at least being threatened with fracturing
blows all over the place. It didn't bother me much because in political matters I'm always comforted by the
knowledge that change usually improves things and if not, this too will pass. And then somebody told me the Market Bulletin was being threatened.
Now really, gentlemen! That's
something all of us country citizens feel very strongly about. We need the Market Bulletin. Even if we didn't need it for the purpose of peddling our duck eggs or our
herbs, we need it for the pure pleasure it gives us.
The Market Bulletin is no-telling
how many years old. I asked Agriculture Commissioner Tom Irvin and he said it's in its 40's, which is a nice, comfortable mature age and shows that it's not any fly-bynight, here-today-gone-tomorrow publication. Young Mr. Irvin didn't
say so but I suspect that he went into the job of Commissioner of Agriculture because he had been raised on the Market Bulletin and liked it so much he wanted to draw closer to it.
This I do remember. When he first
took office he asked a lot of people in the reading and writing business for their ideas on making it better. Remembering the days when it had devoted most of its front pages to the photograph and a political message from the commissioner, I
suggested to Mr. Irvin that he cut down a little on this personal ex-
ploitation. He had already decided on that, he said, and he has stuck to it. His picture seldom, if ever, appears in the bulletin.
The front page is devoted to mat-
ters of interest to the farmer and, more and more, to the consumer,
which includes all our city cousins, of course. You find a handy calendar or agricultural events, stock
shows and the like, there and you also find tips on planting your city lawn and propagating shrubs and trees. In the last few years the Market Bulletin has taken to
carrying recipes good recipes and just before Christmas it had a whole column devoted to making Christmas cards (using an Irish
potato for a stamp, no less) and contriving pretty decorations out of next to nothing. It also told us how to keep our Christmas greenery safe
and fireproof. One of my favorite departments
has been the (new with Commissioner Irvin's regime) column about wild flowers and herbs. Each week a new flower is sketched and something of its habits and its uses and the legends about it is told.
But day in and day out, the ads contributed by citizens all over the state, are the best reading you can find anywhere. The herb ladies of the mountains have roots of everything from Queen of the Meadow to ginseng to sell. The
quilts and crocheted bootees, the aprons and bonnets and bean seed and flower seed, rooted plants and bulbs all these keep us eager readers in a constant state of
delight. Where but in the Market Bulletin
would you find a short-short story like the one told in two ads by Public Service Commissioner Bobby Pafford?
Mr. Pafford, newly come to farming, I understand, first advertised thus: "WANTED: Five nanny goats,
one billy; butt-headed. No jumpers." The rest of the story came a few
weeks later when Mr. Pafford advertised: "WANTED TO SELL: Five
nanny goats, one billy; butt-headed. Some jumpers."

Please advise what I can use to destroy cane fishing pole reeds. I have cut the poles even with the ground and would like to spray to kill the roots as they are next to impossible to dig up.

I have five water oak trees in my yard that have been very healthy. Now there is one that doesn't have a leaf on it. Upon examining the tree I found the limbs covered with worms or small caterpillars. What will get rid of these creatures?
J. S., Gainesville "Wriggles the worm man" advises using Sevin dust. Sevin is available at feed and seed stores and gard*en* c*enters.
When should I set my poinsettia out in the yard? Mrs. J. S., Palmetto

legislators Praised
By Ag Commissioner
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has praised members of the Georgia General Assembly for upholding his veto over the portions of the Governor's Reorganization Plan that would have abolished the Tobacco and Seed Advisory Boards and other sections that would effect the Commissioner and the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Commissioner Irvin said he was most pleased that the House and Senate members recognized the importance of these functions and just how drastically some phases of agriculture in Georgia would have been affected had not the Legislature upheld this position.
Representatives
Provide Hot Line
For Citizens
The Georgia House of Representatives Public Information Office has a toll-free Information Line for citizens who have questions about House activities.
The toll-free number for persons outside the Atlanta calling area is 1800-282-5800. For persons in the Atlanta calling area the number is 656-5083.
Citizens may use the line to leave messages for House members, to check the status of certain bills, to find out How their legislator had voted on a certain issue and even to get the name or mailing address of their legislators.
"The Information Office stands ready to answer just about any question pertaining to House activities," House Speaker George L. Smith said. "We encourage citizens to call the free number when they have a question about what's going on in Atlanta."
Help Save
Your Bulletin
Last week the Governor presented to the Georgia Legislature his budget proposal for the coming fiscal year. In this proposal the appropriation for the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin was drastically cut.
This budget cut would destroy the BULLETIN as a weekly farmers and consumers publication. If you are interested in helping to save the BULLETIN in its present form, please let your local representative hear from you.
The budget proposal will be acted on during this session of the legislature, so let your representative hear from you this week.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor: I have inherited a begonia from a dear friend and want to take good care of it. Can I plant it outside or should it stay in a pot inside? I really want to know more about this plant and hope you can tell me.
Oscar Cass Atlanta, Georgia
(Editor's note: According to the George W. Park Seed Company, fibrous Begonias are spectacular. They start blooming while still young and never stop. No other plant keeps its neat mound-like habit all summer long and creates such a riot of color, rain or shine. The F1 hybrid varieties are especially suited for growing outdoors. Full sun is recommended where temperatures do not stay long above 90; but everywhere they do well in partial shade. They are perfect winter window pot plants and for tubs on porch or patio. They are absolutely uniform in plant habit and color. May we suggest that you write the George W. Park Seed Company, Greensboro, S.C., 29646, for their catalog which illustrates and tells about each variety.)
Dear Editor: I have recently read and tried a great discovery and wanted to share it with your readers. If your coffee table has scratches on it, just put a dab of mayonnaise on the scratch, leave for awhile and then rub it real hard with soft rags. My table was so pretty after this it looked just like new.

Rattlesnake pl
antain, also cal

is a member of

it the name of rat

The plant has been reputed as an
infallible cure for hydrophobia and snake bites. The Indians had such
faith in its remedial virtues that
they would allow a snake to drive
its fangs into them for a small sum,
ff they had these leaves on hand to
apply to the wound.
Plantain is often advertised in
our Bulletin. We do not know

variety has been included.

measure another first for Georgia. When threatened by disease,
Georgia leaders and animal owners respond swiftly, as they did last summer when Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis entered southern Texas from Mexico, requiring widescale vaccination of horses to protect against this vectortransmitted killer; and also to protect people, for whom infected horses can be a large source for vector transmission. In humans it's flulike and only rarely fatal.
Animal disease prevention, control, and eradication are carried out by the states in cooperation with Animal and Plant Health Service of USDA. Program standards and procedures derive from the joint thinking and experience of livestock owners, veterinarians, and State and Federal officials. These, when adopted by the States and USDA as Uniform Methods and Rules, policies, etc., are the basis for programs.
Foreign animal diseases are a constant threat.-African swine fever appeared in Cuba some months ago with devastating effects since. It is indistinguishable in appearance from hog cholera and even more of a killer. Having it so close is dangerous. It could wipe out our swine population if it gained entry and were not stopped. There is no present means to immunize against it vaccine, etc. Foot-and-mouth disease could be widely devastating, like the outbreak in the British Isles in 1967-'68 in which 422,500 animals valued at 72 million dollars were sacrificed to eliminate it. It is urgently important that we detect all possibilities of foreign animal diseases and diagnose them immediately; and further, should one get in, that we prevent its spread and eliminate it as quickly as possible. The highly mobile world in which we now live has increased this threat tremendously.
It is a privilege to commend Georgians, and the Georgia Department of Agriculture for fine leadership and vigorous programs; Georgia veterinarians for their excellent support and service; and the Extension Service for its always excellent assistance.

African Violets Create
Indoor Garden Delight
Troy Keeble
Area Extension Horticulturist Cooperative Extension Service University of Georgia
African violets bring a lot of joy and beauty to the indoor gardener. Because
of their size they are adapted to the smallest apartment or the largest home. Their ease of culture and ability to produce large numbers of flowers make
them a favorite of indoor gardeners.
Violets are fairly easy to grow and
flower. However, they do require
certain conditions for success. Light
is among the more limiting factors.
During the winter a south or west
window will provide the required
light. During summer an east or
north window will be ideal.
Symptoms of insufficient light
African Violets when well grown can be most beautiful even in mid-winter. Plants covered with hundreds of blooms are not un common under good conditions.
are light green color, long petioles, and poor flowering. Plants with excessive light may show browned or light colored areas in the leaves.
African violets grow best at a temperature of 65-70 F. or slightly
warmer. Consequently, they do grow
well in homes where other plants are
not successful because of warmer temperatures.
Water is a critical factor with
violets. Soil should be kept unifor-
mly moist by timely applications of
temperate water (room tem-
perature). A good rule to follow is:
Light affects growth and flowering of African Violets. The plant on the left was grown under extremely low light with poor growth and no flowering. The plant on the right was grown un der the proper light, temperature, humidity, fertilized and watered correctly.
Time For Enrollment
In Set-aside Program
touch the soil with the finger tips - if dry, water; if moist withhold water for another day or so.
Do not allow the soil to become hard and crusty between waterings. Violets are more successful when grown in pots with drainage holes. This allows excess water to drain
away. Soils for violets may vary greatly.
However, they grow best in a loose,
well drained soil with a high percentage of organic matter or humus. Generally, a mixture of two parts
Wheat, feed grain and cotton farmers who plan to enroll in the 1972 set-aside program may sign up beginning February 3 through March 10 at county ASCS offices.
The sign-up period is earlier than
usual and no extension of the March 10 deadline will be made.
Farmers who know they will be out of the county through the signup period may arrange with the
county office to sign up in the programs by mail or by other procedure.
To qualify to participate in ASCS set-aside programs for wheat, feed grain and cotton farmers will set aside 83 percent of the farm's
domestic wheat allotment, 25 percent of the feed grain base, and/or
20 percent of their cotton allotment.
Under the 1972 set-aside programs, a participant who complies with the set-aside acreage he has signed up for and maintains his conserving base, is free to plant the rest of his cropland to anything he chooses, except a few crops which are under marketing quotas.
loam, one part leaf mold, one part well-rotted manure or peat moss and one part sand is good for growing of violets.
When potting new plants from
rooted cuttings, do not add fertilizer. When dividing and repotting older plants in the above mixture,
add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of 5-10-5 or 4-12-4 fertilizer per 5" pot. Thoroughly mix fertilizer in the soil
mixture. Better growth and flowering will
result if the soil is sterilized. Small quantities of soil can be sterilized by placing soil in a metal container in a 180 F. oven for 30 minutes.
Fertilizers for established varieties may or may not depend upon past experience of the violet fanciers. Liquid fertilizers are considered more convenient. Be sure to follow the manufacturers recommendations since they will vary considerably
from one company to another. Fertilizing every 3-4 weeks
(depending upon concentration) is usually sufficient. With young plants, fertilization should not begin until the first flower buds show.
