Strides Forward
The "Georgia Agricultural Commodities Promotion Act" was passed by the Georgia General Assembly to provide for the promotion of the production, marketing, sales, use, processing and improvement of the agricultural products of this state.
Georgia Agriculture has made tremendous progress in recent
years. Farm income in our state for 1971 was more than one and onefourth billion dollars and
19 2 look even better. Some of the factors that have played an important role in the progress and success of Georgia agriculture are: 1 . A substitution of capital for labor which has resulted in more ef-

ficient operations and bigger units. 2. The effective application of the
latest technology in the various agricultural enterprises.
3. Commercial agriculture in our state is now in the hands of highly competent, industrious, energetic, dedicated people who consider themselves in the BUSINESS of farming.
4. And then one other factor that to me is highly important and is making a significant contribution to agriculture's progress is the fact that Georgia farmers have been willing to vote themselves into a self-help program for nine of the major commodities grown in our state known as the Agricultural Commodity Commissions.
In July 1965 a referendum was held and a majority of the cotton farmers voting favored the organization of an Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton and were willing to assess themselves on every bale of cotton produced.
This simply means that farmers are not depending entirely on State and Federal Government but are willing to put some of their own resources into programs that are designed to improve the position of the commodities they grow.
The Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton is supporting research in the College of Agriculture that we hope will result in new and better varieties of cotton and methods that will reduce the cost of disease and insect control. The Commission is promoting new and additional uses of cotton.

Seed Case Ended Georgia Farmers Beware
With Settlement

A $277 compromise settlement has ended a seed case against the Terry Horn Seed Company, Knox-
ville, Tennessee, for violations of the Federal Seed Act.
The case involved, in part, a shipment of oat seed made to Ringgold. When the seed was sampled and tested by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, it was found to be incompletely labeled as to the presence of noxious-weed seed.
The Federal Seed Act is a truth-inlabeling law designed to protect farmers and other consumers in the purchase of seed. It requires, in part, that agricultural seed be labeled truthfully and completely. __
Soybean Expo Planned
Weed control will be the overriding concern of Georgia soybean producers at the second annual Soybean Exposition planned Oct. 19, in Tifton at the RDC.
The Expo is being sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service, the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, the Rural Development Center and private industry.

Of Unadopted Rye Seed

Georgia farmers should purchase varieties of rye for fall planting that have

been produced in Georgia, Florida, Alabama or South Carolina for best

assurance of obtaining adapted varieties that will produce the most forage for

winter grazing.

Purchase seed that has an analysis

tag attached showing the complete

purity, germination and origin of the

seed. Make purchases from reputable

dealers only, and never from

itinerant truckers who may be of-

fering bargain seed for sale which do

not comply with the Georgia Seed

Law.

The Seed Division of the Georgia

Department of Agriculture has

you purchased are correctly labeled.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
I am a bird lover and enjoy watching the different birds in the yard. I have several feeders and birdhouses but wonder if there is anything else I can do to attract birds.
Mrs. Jo Ellen Johnston Savannah, Georgia
(Editor's note: Yes, there is a natural way to invite birds to your home. By planting shrubs, trees, vines and other plants that serve the various needs of birds, you will attract them as well as enhance your own grounds. Birds regularly feed on berries and their favorite berries are usually bright and decorative. For shelter, they are satisfied by dense shrubbery The Soil Conservation Office has a pamphlet, "Invite Birds to Your Home", which should be most useful to you. REFRIGERATE CHEESE
Cheese should be kept in the refrigerator at all times when not being used. University of Georgia Extension home economists recommend storing cheese in its original wrapper or in a covered container. Once cut or sliced, cover the cut end of the cheese with waxed paper, plastic wrap or aluminum foil to prevent drying and spoilage.
GRAZING VALUE
Georgia cattlemen and dairymen annually plant more than one million acres of temporary summer and winter grazing crops. These crops, say Cooperative Extension Service agronomists, are capable of producing 2.5 tons of dry matter per acre. This is equal to 3,500 pounds of total digestible nutrients (TON). And it will produce about 7,000 pounds of milk or 600 pounds of beef.

General lime and fertilizer Recommendations
If lime was not applied last year, one

ton/A or more dolomitic limestone may be

needed to raise the soil pH to 6.0-6.5.

If soil magnesium is adequate, any liming

material may be used. If crop is to be

grazed, always use dolomitic limestone

irrespective of magnesium soil level.

For best results, apply lime before

planting. Soil test to determine

specific lime and magnesium needs.

Rhubarb, ancient food of the Indians, has long been a favorite dessert of Americans. Because of its tangy natural flavor, recipes using rhubarb require a great deal of sweetener and even then many find it too tart to suit their taste.
The Indians prepared rhubarb simply by cooking the stalks like asparagus with little or no sweetener added. Most colonists found the plant bitter and undesirable prepared this way. Consequently rhubarb was not a popular food until about 150 years ago except in communities where the tasty European dishes, especially those from Scandinavia, were recalled.
The rhubarb plant is quite distinctive with its large clumps of broad green leaves, up to two feet across, growing on thick fleshy red and green leaf stalks which average twelve to eighteen inches in length. Only the leaf stalk of the rhubarb is edible. Leaves and root contain a substance that can sometimes be poisonous.
The stalks, however, are so tasty in pies that rhubarb has been dubbed the "pie plant". Red-stalked rhubarb is sweeter and more desirable for making pies and sauces. In gathering rhubarb stalks, select the larger ones growing on the outside of the plant, grasp them firmly near the base and with a slight sideways twist, pull them from the crown.
Rhubarb is considered one of the most permanent plants in the vegetable garden. Once established it should not be moved because it will produce for many years. The first season after planting, no stalks should be cut, but pulling the stalks may begin the second season and continue every spring.

We are attempting to get higher per acre yields and lower per pound cost for the farmers.

I have heard that chalk is added to Grade A sweet milk by the processors

before bottling for sale in stores. Is this true?

H. C., Greensboro

It is illegal to add chalk to any kind of milk for human consumption. Our laboratories regularly check all milk sold in the state of Georgia for adulteration and have never found any chalk.

However, organic materials are generally broken down through microbial action, and if you will periodically add some hydrated lime and baker's yeast, you should be able to maintain a steady reaction. As a start, you might add two or three pounds of the lime, stir it in and then add one or two packages of either yeast or yeast cake which has been dissolved in a pint of so of lukewarm water. This treatment should be repeated three or four times a year, depending on the amount of material to be treated.

I just purchased some salmon labeled "recanned". Is it alright to eat? Mrs. H. H., Ellaville

Recanned salmon is salmon which was originally canned with an error on the labeling or a light problem which does not affect the product it self. However, due to the mistake in labeling, it was necessary for the firm to open the cans and reprocess the product so that it could be recan ned and labeled correctly. There is nothing wrong with recanned products as far as being edible; they are just as good as products which are not labeled "recanned". Either product is good to eat and there should be no difference as far as food value goes.

new refrigerator - freezer, remember that a frost-free model uses approximately 50% more power than a frost type.
Canned fruit cocktail is one of a few fruit mixtures which is slan-
darized by law. Peaches and pears make up the greater part of the mixture but it must also include pineapple, grapes and maraschino cherries.
Run your dishwasher only when you have a full load and preferably in the morning or late evening when temperatures are lower and demands on electricity are not so high.
Evaporated milk is prepared when sixty per cent of the water is removed from fresh milk. When mixed with an equal volume of water, its nutritive value is about the same as the milk from which it is made.
Don't let hot water faucets leak. A leak that will fill an ordinary cup in 10 minutes wastes 3280 gallons a year water you have to heat.
Make sure your house is well insulated. This is as important in the summer as in the winter.
Use storm windows year round to help cut your heating and cooling bills up to 15%
It is not wise to buy damaged vegetables, even if the price is low. Produce should be handled carefully. Someone must pay for vegetables lost by rough handling.
If your house is air conditioned, keep your windows closed. You can't cool the outdoors.
Save activities that generate heat such as baking for the cooler early morning or late evening hours, so as to make less work for your air conditioner.
Turn off lights, radios and TVs when there is no one in the room. They not only waste electricity, they generate heat as well. It will be hot enough without adding to your discomfort.

Sleepwear

low heat and no ironing. Treated garments made of cotton
or rayon require more care in cleaning, however. The label instructions read: "Machine wash warm, tumble dry.
Important: to retain the flame retardant properties, do not use soap, bleach, low or nonphosphate detergents; do not send to a commercial laundry." Some garments may have an additional "do not dry in sunlight." Flame retardant qualities will be retained only if these instructions are followed. Exposing the garment to any one of the cautioned laundry conditions will result in loss of flame retardancy. Treated sleepwear should be washed in warm water with a phosphate detergent without bleach and tumble dried or hung to dry indoors. A little extra care, but great safety protection for children.
