On Athens Market
On September 8, 1947, a resolution was adopted by the Athens Junior Chamber of Commerce to sponsor a project to have a state farmers market located in or near Athens.
In reality, this was the birth of the Athens State Farmers
Market now located on West Broad Street, next to the State Patrol Post. For after the resolution and solicitation of help from other organizations, the Jaycees contacted the then Commissioner of Agriculture, Tom Linder and he agreed to give first
(Our Guest Columnist this week is Jack Martin of Athens. In 1971, the Georgia Legislator named Mr. Martin Honorary Historian for the State. He is the only person to ever receive this honor. In addition, he is honorary historian of Athens and Clarke County and publishes a regular column in the Athens newspaper.)_________________
consideration to Athens if they could find a plot of ground in or near the city limits.
After much searching the "Farmers Market Committee" found the lot and with the Commissioner's approval set out to raise $12,000 to purchase it. More than 175 businesses and individuals contributed to raise the necessary money.
The market was built by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and opened on August 2, 1949. That year it was only open two days a week, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The main reason that the Athens Market was put into operation was to help the small farmers who raised produce, giving them a place to sell their merchandise.
The first market manager was J. A. Rape who came here from McDonough. Other managers have been F. F. Dickens, Jr., Grady Booth and Cleve M. Carteledge, while the current manager is J. E. (Red) McLeroy.
The Farmers Market is now in full operation seven days a week from sun-up to sun-down, and they have a wide variety of fresh vegetables, fruits and home-made preserves, jellies, pickles and relishes.
Double Barrel Cannon During the War Between the States, John Gilleland, a native of Athens, and a Private in the Mitchell Thunderbolts conceived the idea that the Confederate Army needed more fire power. He, therefore, invented a double barreled cannon that was moulded by the Athens Foundry and Machine Company. Although the double barreled idea never worked, it is recorded in many libraries and museums as the only double barreled cannon in the world and holds a place of honor on the grounds of the City Hall in Athens.

Georgia's Farmers Markets
In Georgia our state farmer's markets have many functions. For our Georgia farmers, they serve as sales outlets. For the wholesale dealers, they serve as distribution centers throughout the South. And for the housewife, they serve as the source of a plentiful supply of fresh fruits and vegetables the year round.
The Markets Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture operates the markets and enforces laws per-
taining to the marketing, grading and packaging of agricultural products.
The sales from the state farmer's markets for 1971 was $128,099,000. There are 19 operating farmer's markets and five potato curing houses. Of the 19 markets, five are terminal and 14 are assembly point
markets. At the terminal markets, large wholesalers buy and ship produce to the smaller produce dealers in the South.
At the Atlanta farmer's market, the world's largest roadside market, the housewife can buy in bulk during the summer months and put-up for the winter at the canning facilities.
These markets serve their communities in many ways by providing an educational tool, providing community leadership, and serving as a storage place and sales outlet for the farmers.
We hope you will visit your nearest farmer's market soon. Check page 8 for a map showing the locations of Georgia's State Farmers Markets.

Can most all full grown-up dogs spot or sense, or smell any kind of snake (especially poisonous ones).
J. P., Stone Mountain
Snakes do emit a scent, as do all reptiles, which dogs are able to pick
up from protein particles on the ground where reptiles have been. They
can smell the scent and warn their master of possible danger by barking.
Most all dogs are wary of snakes and will not go too close to them;
although they will circle around and bark, which should serve as a war-
ning.

Bugs in my cornmeal. Help. M. E., Clayton
Big problem in summer. Keep your meal in an air tight container. ****
Can I pile red oak leaves around my two year old pecan? Mrs. W. B., Brinson
Do not pile the leaves too deep around your pecan tree trunk. ****
Are wild cherry leaves poisonous to cattle? I cut some trees in my pasture and someone told me the leaves are poisonous.
W. G., Rock Springs
Remove trees and leaves from your pasture. The wild cherry tree is poisonous to cattle. The leaves are the poisonous part and the young green leaves as well as wilted leaves are the most poisonous.

What are the white things all over my catalpa worms? I don't want to lose any worms this year as I did last year.
Mrs. M. Y., Columbus
Seems like these creatures are all over again this year. The white things are coccoons from the Barconid wasp. These wasps lay their eggs in the worms, the eggs hatch into coccoons, crawl out of the worms and feed on the worms. The coccoons hatch into wasps, killing the catalpa worm. To keep the wasps down, destroy all worms with coccoons.

CANNED LAMB Canned products containing lamb will keep well in a cool, dry place storing lamb at too high a temperature may cause undesirable changes in color and flavor, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Under proper storage conditions, lamb products will maintain quality up to a year.
SUB ZERO STORAGE Frozen foods must be stored at zero degrees Fahrenheit or lower. University Extension Service specialists in food preservation say only in rare cases should food be refrozen once allowed to thaw out. Meats, raw vegetables and cooked foods may be refrozen only if their temperature did not exceed 32 degrees or remain at this temperature for longer than a few hours.

O MARKETS SW. POTATO HOUSES
Althea, also known as Rose of
Sharon and Hibiscus Syriacus, is
one of the most beautiful summer flowering shrubs. The bell-shaped
single or double blooms come in an
assortment of colors in shades of red, blue, rose or white. The ovate
and deeply notched dark green leaves provide a striking contrast to
the bright blossoms making this
one of the season's favorite.
The Mallow family, of which it is a
member, includes other colorful
flowering shrubs such as Hibiscus, Confederate Rose and Rose Mallow.
Culture of Altheas is easy and ef-
forts are most rewarding. They
should be planted in early fall or spring in well-drained soil and in a
sunny location. Very little pruning is necessary but the shoots of over-
crowded bushes should be thinned
out in spring. To get the most out of
your plant, place the pruned cut-
tings in a sand bed for rooting.
It's a good bet that you'll want as
many of these plants as you can
squeeze into your yard too because
they are an easy-care, freeflowering shrub that puts on a
colorful floral display when few
others are in bloom..

The Environment
Farmers and ranchers spend millions of dollars every year to protect the nation's soil and water supplies and to stop pollution.
As members of 3,000 local soil and water conservation districts across the nation, farmers and ranchers have improved more than 575 million acres of private land. Last year alone, they built 30,000 miles of terraces to stop flood waters from washing valuable top soil away. They planted trees on 340,000 acres, managed five million acres for wildlife and raised the nation's total of recreation ponds to two million.
Power Show
One of the largest and most complete displays of farm power and indoor-outdoor recreation equipment ever held in the South will be assembled in Tifton October 12-14.
The Farm Power and Recreation Show, sponsored by units of the University System of Georgia and private industry, is being designed with the entire rural family in mind.
Planners are hoping to have every type farm power and fun equipment, ranging from tractors to work-hobby tools to boats, available for all members ot the family to inspect, price and actually use.

Consumer Tips
"For Your Protection"
"For Your Protection" will be a regular summer feature to help you be a better informed consumer and more aware of the services of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Look for it!
After cutting raw chicken and other poultry, you should clean your cutting board thoroughly before using it again for the cooked bird and other foods. This step helps assure proper sanitation and wholesomeness of the product.
Grade B is seldom printed on poultry labels. Grade B poultry may be less attractive and slightly lacking in meatiness but is still wholesome. If you see poultry on sale at your market without any printed label, it might be Grade B. Ask the meat manager.
Barbecue sauce with meat has minimum of 35% meat while beef with barbecue sauce has a minimum of at least 50% beef.
To be labeled a particular name, such as "ALL BEEF FRANKS" or "CHICKEN SOUP", a Federally inspected meat or poultry product must be approved by the U. S. Department of Agriculture as well as the Georgia State Department of Agriculture as meeting specific product requirements.
The list of ingredients on the label begins with the item weighing the most and continues to the item weighing the least.
Control Weeds The question of "weeds in soybeans" often becomes one of "weeds or soybeans". Many soybean growers have watched their yields dwindle to almost nothing because they believed a few weeds couldn't do too much harm.
Effective weed control measures are necessary throughout the growing season if beans of top quantity and quality are to be harvested. If the soybeans must compete with weeds for available nutrients, sunlight and moisture, they cannot reach their full potential.
It takes only a few weeds per acre to drastically reduce soybean yields.
Both cultural practices and herbicides can be used to control weeds in soybeans. Contact your county Extenion agent for a list ot recommended herbicides.
