Peach Disease Needs Research
Recently I visited the peach production areas of middle Georgia to appraise the situation concerning the peach tree disease which has been plaguing Georgia farmers for some time and has killed an estimated 200,000 peach trees in Georgia this year.
I felt then that a concentrated effort needed to be made
linto this area |of research im| mediately to av| oid further eco; nomic stress to the state's in, dustry.
I was therefore pleased and supported our two senators, Herman Talmadge and David Gambrell, in their efforts to secure additional research funds from the U. S. Department of Agriculture to find the cause and cure for the shortened life of the peach tree.
While in the area, I also visited the Fruit and Nut Lab in Byron and Dr. H. C. Kirkpatrick, Director, mentioned to me that some assistance was needed in securing aerial photographs to aid in the research.
In this interest, I discussed the problem with Dr. John E. Mock, Director of the Georgia Science and Technology Commission. As a result of this discussion, Dr. Mock requested assistance .from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in conducting aerial surveys of the peach producing counties and the NASA officials agreed to render this support. Feasibility and methods of this aerial study are presently being considered.
These aerial photographs, in the hands of scientists, could offer important information to be used in the study to eliminate the costly peach tree disease.
I certainly hope that our Georgia Senators will be successful in securing these funds for further and more concentrated research into this disease and that the aerial surveys which are now being planned will be of direct and quick benefit to our Georgia peach farmers.
Ten Corn Counties
Pass Million Mark
Ten Georgia counties last year produced more than two million bushels of corn each as yields bounced back after the Southern corn leaf blight devastation of 1970.
The Georgia Crop Reporting Service indicates that 1,532,000 acres harvested for grain averaged 56 bushels per acre in 1971. It also shows 1,751,000 acres were planted to corn for all purposes.
Bulloch County led the state in corn production, with a crop estimated at 3,120,000 bushels. Coffee County also passed the threemillion-bushel mark at 3,050,000 bushels.

Go. Continues
Safety Program
For Parathion
Georgia is one of the few states that has avoided any serious poisonings from Parathion because of its safety program.
This year Georgia will be continuing the Parathion Safety Program in cooperation with the U.S.D.A. Industry and consumers as well as members of the medical profession are asked to cooperate in carrying out the terms of this program.
Purchasers of Parathion are being asked to sign a pre-purchase card confirming that they have been informed of the procedures for the safe handling of this material.
Parathion is a very effective and necessary chemical for agriculture. It is an organic phosphate which quickly decomposes in contact with light and moisture in the atmosphere; and therefore, it does not accumulate in the environment. However, it is an acutely toxic chemical when taken by mouth, inhaled or when absorbed through the unbroken skin, and when misused can result in serious consequences.
Straight Line
How many chickens would I need for family use only?
Mrs. R. W., Marietta This would depend on the type of housing available. If you have a small enclosed house where you can maintain the birds in confinement and prevent them from being exposed to extreme temperatures or have a small yard where they can run out, a dozen to a dozen and one-half good laying hens would provide a family with all the eggs they can possibly use. This is assuming only a 50 or 60 percent production.

What is the fastest growing shade tree for my area?
E. N., Colquitt Best all around trees would be yellow poplar, magnolia, Winged elm, Black Gum, White Oak, and Slash Pine. These grow six inches to a foot each year with few insect and/or disease problems. The Forestry Commission offers these trees for sale each year to the general public. For details, contact your local forester.

How can I rid my pond of otters? They have taken over.
Mrs. F. W., Glennville
Purchase some steel traps (No. 4) at your local hardware store. The traps should be connected to a chain or wire long enough so that the otter will be able to get down in the water and drown himself. Otherwise, he will knaw his foot off and escape. We would suggest that you do this immediately since otters are extremely destructive in a fish pond.

Who's To Blame?
How High Are Food Prices, Anyway? It May Be Your Best Bargain

The American farmer, the food he produces, and the cost of that food have been much in the news lately. In the last 20 years, for example, wholesale food
prices have gone up 20 percent and retail food prices have gone up 43 percent.

Ass't. Commissioner Receives Appointment
Dr. Guy Eberhardt, Georgia Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture, has been appointed by U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Earl L. Butz to serve on the National Meat and Poultry Inspection Advisory Committee.
The purpose of the Committee is to advise the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture on pertinent matters relating to federal-state Cooperative Inspection Programs. The Committee presents recommendations, assists in formulating policy for management and helps with enforcement of regulations for coordinating activities.

Some facts and figures in "Food and Home Notes" from the U. S. Department of Agriculture shed some light on the subject and indicate that the farmer does not deserve all the blame he's getting for high food prices.
Farm prices for food products, on the other hand, have gone up only 6 percent.
And 20 years ago the farmer received 49 cents of the dollar spent by consumers for farmraised food. Farmers are now receiving only about 38 cents of that dollar.
While output per man hour in manufacturing industries has multiplied by 1.6 in the last 20 years, output per man hour on farms is up 3.3 times. In the early 1950s one farm worker supplied 16 people with food. Now he produces enough for 51 people.
Although retail food prices have gone up 43 percent, they have not advanced as much as other main categories in the cost-of-living index.
Twenty years ago people paid 23 percent of their take-home pay for food. Last year they spent 16 percent of their take-home pay for food, and this year are expected to spend even less.
And while the American consumer was spending a decreasing amount of his take-home pay for food, the food he was buying increased in quality and quantity.
Consider: 1 . Farmers produced and marketed 21.9 billion pounds of beef

Fungus Invades Ga's Flowers

By Troy Keeble Area Extension Horticulturist

Each spring as warm temperatures and humid conditions become common
place a plague overtakes many Azaleas and Camellias. The young developing leaves become over developed as a fungus invades the leaf tissues. The leaves will become quite enlarged and fleshy, several times their normal thickenss.

The arrow, pointing to the infected part of the plant, shows how the fungus begins.

Leaf color may vary from a bronzy pink to pale yellow green. The underside of the leaf will be white and will-begin to slough off. Once the fungus disease has run its cycle the affected leaves begin to shrink and darken. They eventually fall to the ground where the organisms remain until the right conditions come along next spring.
The disease is called Azalea leaf gall or Camellia leaf gall and is caused by a species of air borne fungus called Exobasiduim.
The disease is generally more unsightly than it is harmful. Unless every leaf is affected the disease is of little consequence. Where a gardener has only a few plants satisfactory control can be obtained by hand

We Get Letters

Dear Editor:

I ordered some giant cockscomb seeds last summer, then received a letter from the lady that the seeds were gone. She said if I would send 50 cents she would send a plant when they were available. I did this too but never did get a plant. Now I have lost her name. I still would like the cockscomb seeds or plant if she reads this.

4-H PROGRAMS
A lazy, thought-wandering stroll through dense greenery. Camping might be that or almost anything else you or your 4-H'ers want it to be educational fun for older kids, for younger ones, even for adults. Programs might be conducted in city parks or along creek banks seemingly remote from civilization or almost anywhere else. For a look at Georgia's 102 learnby-doing 4-H projects, contact your Extension county agent.
COWS DO BETTER
Well over half the dairy cows in the United States are now bred artifically, compared with only about 30 percent in 1960. This has increased the availability of higher quality sires, and thus has made a contribution to higher output per cow. Less productive dairy operations have gone out of business, according to Economic Research Service of USDA. ERS says farms selling milk or cream now number fewer than 400,000 down from about a million in 1960.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Corn belongs to the family Gramineae or grasses. These include such cereals as wheat, oats, barley, sorghum and rice. Nutritionally, corn provides carbohydrates and a variety of vitamins and minerals to the daily diet.
Corn grows under a wide range of conditions, from altitudes below sea level to 12,000 feet high in the Andes of Peru; in arid plains and in subtropical regions and in short and long growing seasons. Corn is essentially a warm-weather crop, is easily killed by frost and subject to serious injury if exposed to prolonged cool temperatures of several degrees above freezing.
Corn is closely associated with the history of the New World, having been the most important crop in the Americas as far back as records exist. The probably origin point is northern South America or Central America, first cultivated as a crop by the natives of these regions. The first Europeans to see corn growing were crew members of Columbus' ships exploring Cuba in 1492. They reported seeing fields of corn 18 miles long.
The Pilgrims, including the legendary Miles Standish, found fields of corn stubble in November, 1620. An Indian named Squanto was employed by the Pilgrims to teach them how to grow corn.
The folklore of ancient America abounds with legends of how and where the first corn seed originated, and how the particular Indian tribe was taught to grow and use it. This legendary event always coincided with the start of a better way of life.
One colorful tradition exists among the Navajo Indians, that "all the wise men being one day assembled, a turkey hen came flying from the direction of the morning star and shook from her feathers an ear of blue corn into the midst of the company." Navajo blue corn probably is.one of the earliest forms of sweet corn which the early settlers cultivated.

Fungus
(Continued From Page 1)
picking infected leaves. Pick the leaves and place in a
plastic bag and seal or tie. Do not drop the affected leaves to the ground. If so they will lie there until next spring and reinfect the plants. Where a large number of plants makes it impractical to hand pick, a preventitive spray may be utilized before the new leaves begin to unfold in the spring.
Fungicides to prevent the disease are Ferbam, or Zineb or Maneb. Consult your county agent for more detailed information on the amounts of fungicide and timing applications.

WANTED: AN OLD RAILWAY STATION
The Georgia Agrirama Authority is seeking an old railway station, similar to the one pictured, for permanent display at the Georgia Agrirama in Tif ton. The Georgia Agrirama features an agricultural museum for artifacts dating back to Indian agriculture and includes a "Futuristic Section" on farm and rural life of the future, a farm village and farmstead, a 12-acre lake and an official Georgia Welcome Center. The purpose of the Agrirama is to preserve the past, explain the present and predict the future of agriculture in the South. If you know of such a station which might be available, please write to Dr. Frank King, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, 31794, giving the precise location and present owner, if known.

Food Prices
(Continued From Page 1)
in 1971. Twenty years ago they produced and marketed only 8.8 billion pounds.
2. Last year beef consumption per person averaged 114.3 pounds. Twenty years ago the average consumption per person was 56.1 pounds.
3. Twenty years ago only a third of the beef produced was Choice grade. Now 60 percent of beef production is Choice.
USDA says the increase in food prices is primarily because of higher wages. Average wage rates per hour of production workers in manufacturing are 2.3 times higher than 20 years ago. They were $1.56 per hour in 1951, $3.57 in 1971. The average hourly earnings of food marketing employees is 2.5 times higher than two decades ago. They were $1.31 in 1951 and $3.24 in 1971.
The largest increases in the cost of food are for food eaten away from home. This is where labor and services are the main ingredients of food cost.
Total food expenditures away from home have risen 79 percent in the last 10 years, and the price index for food eaten away from home has increased more than 50 percent since 1961.
Peat Moss
Challenged
Peat moss, the organic material gardeners have depended on for years, is suddenly being challenged by of all things tree bark.
Horticultural research at the University of Georgia indicates that bark has all the benefits of peat plus the fact that it is excellent for mulching.
General recommendations call for a three-to-four-inch layer of bark around trees and plant beds for mulching, and a similar amount worked into the top eight inches of the soil for improving the soil structure.
Bark mulch, unlike pine straw, does not need to be removed before spring plowing. Just plow the bark under and it becomes that year's soil amendment. A fresh new mulch can be added year after year.
Fruit Cocktail
Canned fruit cocktail is one of a few fruit mixtures which is standardized by Federal law. Peaches and pears make up the greater part of the mixture but it must also include pineapple, grapes, and maraschino cherries.

The Dairy Cow
The dairy cow is a marvelous food factory. No other beast or bird, no other man-operated manufacturing machine or plant is more efficient in the production of food for man. She takes the grasses and grains of the fields and converts them into the most perfect single food milk.
She produces on the average from an acre of crops: 2,190 pounds of milk which contains 72 pounds of digestible protein and 712 units (Therms) of energy!
She is the number one soil conservationist, building the fertility and the productiveness of the land. Prosperity follows the dairy cow. She appears with man on the stone tablets that record the earliest appearance of the human race. Man has migrated more often in search of green pastures for his cows than for any other cause.
A school boy wrote: "The cow is a mobile, animated machine housed in unprocessed leather. One end is equipped with a mower, grinder and other standard equipment, including bumpers, headlights, wingflaps and fog horn. At the other end is a milk dispenser and insect repellent.
"Centrally located is a conversion plant consisting of a combination storage and fermentation vat, three converters in series and a complicated arrangement of conveyor tubes. The machine is also equipped with a central heating plant, pumping system and air-conditioning.
"Although mysterious and secret, this plant is unpatented. It is available in various sizes, colors and output ranging from one to 20 tons of milk a year."
