Gardens Ready
Summer Show
Annuals and bedding plants are now coming into their full glory. In some areas petunias, salvia and marigolds have already put on a summer show of color. In other areas the curtain is just now going up on the summer show. Rain and cool temperatures in some areas have delayed flowering in some gardens.
As our old garden stand-bys such as petunias make their
show we can extend their period of effectiveness. This extension is possible by maintaining healthy vigorous plants. This means watering the flower bed in case of dry weather. A thorough watering once a week is desirable. Shallow sprinklings are far less effective. In fact, they may encourage or promote
(Our guest columnist this week is Mr. Troy Keeble, Extension Hor ticulturist for the metropolitan Atlanta area.______________
shallow root development which will be more seriously affected by dry weather- or hot summer temperatures.
Along with correct watering, fertilization is necessary to maintain an adequate supply of nutrients for plant growth and flowering. Monthly applications of 1 - 2 pounds of a complete fertilizer (your regular lawn fertilizer such as 8-8-8) per 100 square feet of flower bed should be adequate. Spread the fertilizer uniformly over the flower bed, taking care not to get it on the plants.
In case you misdirect the fertilizer and get a bit of it on the plant take your hose and lightly rinse the plants. Thoroughly water the flower bed to get the fertilizer down into the root zone where it is needed. Remember it may take hours to wet the soil down to a depth of 8-12 inches depending upon your particular soil. Sandy soils-wet much easier than clays.
One of the major pests of annuals or bedding plants are snails or slugs. They have rather large appetites and can destroy a planting in a very short time. The poison baits will do a creditable job. However, after these baits have been exposed to rains of heavy dews they lose their attractiveness for the snails and slugs.
It will be necessary to make several applications of the bait throughout the summer.
One last point on getting full mileage out of your annuals and bedding plants. To prolong flowering always pinch or clip away the old flower heads as soon as they pass the colorful stage. Many times seed pods will develop if old flowers are allowed to remain on the plant. Seed development places a drain on the food supply of the plant. Hence flowering will be greatly reduced.

Georgia Snakes
'Diol-The-News'
A public service, "Dial-the-news", which provides instant market livestock news, was initiated recently by the Federal-State Market News Service in Thomasville.
The automatic answering device is available to provide buyers and sellers with up-to-the-minute market information on livestock prices. Information is up-dated three times daily: 11:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.
The 11:00 a.m. update deals primarily with hog markets, the 12:15 p.m. with cattle prices and carlot meat prices, and the 4:00 p.m. with the day's market information along with late afternoon auction hog prices.
Market information is available 24 hours a day by calling 912-2269511.
Farm Survey
Agriculture is America's biggest business. To help you keep up with its rapid and important changes, the Georgia Crop Reporting Service needs the aid of many farmers and ranchers. The year's biggest farm survey starts in late May and ends in early June. Some farmers may receive questionnaires in the mail. Others may be visited by an . enumerator working part-time for USDA.
If your farm is in the survey sample, please cooperate. All information is kept confidential and only state and national totals are released.
Settlement Ends
Ga. Seed Case
A $600 compromise settlement has ended a seed case against Penningtqn Grain and Seed, Inc., of Vidalia, for alleged violations of the Federal Seed Act.
The case involved wheat, field corn and rye seed shipped into Florida from December 1967 through September 1969.
The firm was charged with false labeling as to the presence of noxious-weed seeds, rate of germination, date of test, and purity of the seed. In addition, the firm was charged with failure to keep complete records and misrepresenting that the seed was certified.
The Federal Seed Act is a truth-inlabeling law designed to protect farmers and other consumers in the purchase of seed. It requires, in part, that agricultural seed be truthfully and completely labeled.
Friend Or Foe?
Snakes widely feared and basically misunderstood are abundant this time
of year and can be found in heavy brush along the edges of open fields and
along the banks of lakes and streams as well as in many yards.
Many people will immediately kill
any snake within sight. Actually,
these men are sometimes doing
themselves a disservice by destroying
one of the most effective controllers
of rats and other pests. Only a small
number of snakes found in the wild
are actually dangerous to man. These
can usually be avoided by the
cautious.
The deadly snakes native to
Georgia are the rattlesnake, copperhead, cottonmouth or water moccasin, and the coral snake. Species of rattlesnakes found in Georgia are the eastern diamond back, the timber rattler, the pigmy rattler, and the canebrake rattler.
PYGMY RATTLER The pygmy rattler usually measures 15 to 22 inches. It thrives in the vicinity of lakes, river flood plains, swamps and marshes. It is usually slate-colored or grayish brown with widely separated, rounded black blotches along the middle
of the back with smaller markings on
the side and a reddish band between
the markings on the back.
DIAMOND BACK The diamondback is the largest, and one of the most dangerous of the rattlesnakes. It ranks among the world's deadliest snakes. Average size of adults is 33 inches to six feet in length. The body of this snake is dark olive, olive brown or almost black, marked with a chain of symmetrical, pale-edged, blackish diamond-shaped markings with light centers. This coloration blends with the lights and shadows of the debris on the ground in the South Georgia regions of scrub palmetto, low brush and dry pine woods where it is frequently found, often close to water. It will swim through salt-water to offshore islands such as Blackbeard and Sapelo off the Georgia coast. It is most frequently encountered by man where farmland is scattered among strips of woodland.
Cotton Gains
During 1970-71, mill use of all kinds of cotton gained for the first time since 1965. At season's end on July 31, U. S. mills had consumed 8.1 million bales of cotton up from around 8 million the previous
season. Denim production jumped about a half, and corduroy output rose one-third.
TIMBER RATTLER In the wooded mountainous regions of North Georgia the timber rattler can be found in second growth timber where small rodents are plentiful. Average length is three to four feet. Sometimes it is found around farmland, especially when crops are being harvested. Its color is usually yellow, brown or gray with chevronshaped cross bands of black or dark brown. Some specimens may be entirely black, but this color phase is more common in the northeastern states than in Georgia. The canebrake rattlesnake, a very similar species, replaces the timber rattler along the coastal plains.
COTTONMOUTH The cottonmouth's body is usually brown or olive-colored with darker -blotches on the back and sides. Larger specimens may be nearly black with little trace of markings. The name cottonmouth is taken from the white mouth which is revealed when the snakes strike or threaten to strike. Curiously, they are not generally found above the fall line north of Augusta. Macon, or Columbus, except on streams that flow into Alabama, such as the Coosa River.

Recipes of the Week
(Oops! Our printers goofed in the syrup cake published in the May 3 issue of the MARKET BULLETIN. Many copies went out reading sugar as an ingredient instead of syrup. Sorry that this caused many of you to have flat cakes.)
SYRUP CAKE
1 stick butter
1 egg
2 cups syrup
2 cups self-rising flour
Grease 11 x 13 inch pan and flour good. Bake about 45
minutes at 300.
PRALINES
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups sugar
1 Tablespoon butter
1 cup pecan halves
1 teaspoon vanilla
Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Mix with sugar, and cook,
stirring constantly over low flame. (Use large pan as mixture
foams during cooking.) When candy reaches soft ball stage
238 remove from flame and add butter. Beat about 1 minute.
Add pecans and vanilla. While still warm, drop by teaspoon-
fuls onto waxed paper.
This mixture turns brown while cooking and will appear scor-
ched. Coconut may be added instead of pecans. Makes
about 18 pieces.

ARTICHOKE RELISH
1 peck Jerusalem
1 large bunch celery,
artichokes
chopped
1 dozen bell peppers
1 large can pimentoes,
drained
Sauce:
2 T. mustard, dry
2 T. Tumeric
2 cups, flour
8 cups sugar
1 gallon apple cider vinegar
Wash artichokes with stiff brush and remove as many of the
eyes as possible. Cut them in small pieces, cut celery, pep-
pers, and pimentoes the same way. This doesn't work too
well if they are put through a grinder, chop instead.
Soak everything but the pimentoes in brine made of 2 cups
salt and covered with boiling water and let stand overnight.
Squeeze out artichokes in nylon bag that'they were soaking
in brine. Make sauce by adding muslard, tumeric, flour, sugar
and a little vinegar at a time to keep the flour from lumping.
Slowly let it come to a boil until it starts to thicken and then
add everything else, artichokes, celery, peppers, pimentoes.
Let cook slowly for only 10 to 15 minutes. Don't let cook too
long or everything gets too soft. Seal in jars.

WASH JAR TOPS
Take time to wash jar tops
on all vacuum sealed foods
before opening. University
of Georgia Extension Home
Economist Nelle Thrash says
many
types
of
microorganisms are ready to
enter food once the seal is
broken. This rule also ap-
plies to all metal cans. If the
lid should drop as the can is
opened, many micro-
organisms enter the
food. Cleanliness is ex-
tremely important in
keeping food clean once the
seal is broken.
TOP FARM ITEMS Ever wonder about the ten most valuable commodities produced on U. S. farms? Well, here they are ... ranked according to cash receipts: 1. cattle and calves; 2. dairy products; 3. hogs; 4. corn; 5. soybeans; 6. eggs; 7. wheat; 8. broilers; 9. tobacco, and 10. cotton.
YOUR WILL
A person who dies before he has made out a valid will is said to have died "in-
testate". And it means any property he may have owned is distributed to his widow and heirs according to rigid rules of state law. Economists with the University of Georgia Extension Service say a properly prepared will and testament is a much better way in just about every case.

What Jotqet-me-iwto
Myosotis scorpiodes, also known as Forget-me-not, Mouse-ear and Scorpion-grass, is a European flower which has become naturalized throughout the coastal plain states wherever there is wet ground or a swampy stream nearby.
The plants are usually branching, often weak stemmed due to their rather succulent nature. Myosotis is from the Greek for mouse-ear which applies particularly to the hairy leaves of the plant.
The flowers are mainly blue, but sometimes pink or white. The beautiful color of the flowers and low growth make forget-me-nots very attractive bedding plants, especially as a ground cover for bulbs. They prefer partial shade and plenty of moisture.
Snakes
(Continued From Page 1)
CORAL SNAKE The coral snake, the only poisonous species in Georgia which is not a pit viper, can be identified by its coloration. This small snake has broad rings of scarlet and black separated by narrow rings of yellow. To distinguish the Coral snake frorr other similarly-colored nonpoisonous snakes, you might remember the old saying, "Red touch black, good for Jack. Red touch yellow, kill a fellow." It is only found in South Georgia. Coral snakes are relatively rare. Their mouths and fangs are small, so they cannot bite as easily as rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, or copperheads. The coral snake must grab its victim and literally chew its way into his flesh. A finger or bare toe is a prime target for this snake. Coral snake bites have been reported as far north as Hawkinsville, although these snakes are usually found only in the southern part of the state. If you don't go barefoot and don't pick these snakes up, chances are you won't be bitten by one of them.
COPPERHEAD A copperhead can be identified by the red, copper-colored head from which it gets its name, and the reddish-brown hourglass markings on the sides of its body. It is rarely more than three feet long. Its tail ends in a point like the rattler, but of course, has no rattles. They may be found in mountains, wooded hillsides, rock piles, rock

Carpel Cleaning
Requires Caulion
by Claire Simpson, Extension Home Economist
The American housewife of today prides herself on her self reliant spirit
which allows her to attempt everything from plumbing repairs to carpentry.
However, this same spirit can spell disaster in do-it-yourself rug cleaning unless
care is exercised.
The idea that "if a little is good, more is better" has led to an increasing number of rugs and carpets being stained according to the
discoloration along with other impurities found in the backing is
dissolved. As the carpet dries, the moisture is
National Institute of Rug Cleaning. In the case of wet-type cleaning solutions, the result is often a delayed action brown spot which is blamed on everything but the real
culprit too much water. Pure water alone can cause
discoloration in carpeting. The process begins when excess moisture soaks through to the backing of the
carpet or rug. Jute, paper, unbleached cotton, some of the common materials used for backing, contain a yellow or brown substance caused by the natural process called
cellulose degradation. If the backing becomes soaked, part of this
drawn to the surface where it leaves a discoloration at the tips of the tufts, a process called wicking. When deposited, this discoloration is almost permanent. Frequently the stains go unnoticed until a thorough cleaning makes the contrast more apparent.
Professional rug cleaners rely on rigid control of water as the secret of their success in using wet cleaning agents. Suds are kept as dry as possible and no moisture is allowed to wet the backing.
The housewife who spills water on her carpet or uses too much in
cleaning should immediately attempt to blot up as much as possible with

Georgia 4-H has named five delegates to a national 4-H summit meeting in Washington, D.C.

materials should then be placed on the area and weighted to keep it in direct contact with the carpet. The remaining moisture along with im-
purities are then absorbed by the material rather than left on the tufts.
So, remember, in cleaning rugs

quarries, sawdust piles and in lowlands or near streams all over
Georgia. Copperheads may be found within city limits.
All rattlesnakes as well as cop perheads and cottonmouths are pit
vipers and can be distinguished from other types of snakes by several characteristics. Each has a depression or pit between the eye
and the nostril and the heads of these snakes are broader than the body and usually appear when viewed from above to be shaped roughly like the point of an arrow. The pupils of the eyes of the pit vipers are elongated with a cat's eye type pupil, while other snakes have round pupils. The pit vipers have a single row of segmented plates below the anal opening. Other snakes have a double row of divided plates below the anal opening.
What can you do to prevent being bitten? Stay out of thick brush whenever possible. Step on a fallen log or similar object before stepping over it. Look before you put your foot down. Don't reach into hollow logs, gopher holes or other places that might hold snakes. Though
potentially fatal, poisonous snakebites rarely are, for several reasons.
Many of the snakes which bite people are small, and inject only, a small amount of venom into their victim. Even a very large snake can strike and fail to inject any venom or can inject only a small amount. Heavy clothing or shoes may prevent full penetration of the fangs into human flesh.
Prompt first aid treatment and medical care are important factors in keeping the mortality rate low.
Use common sense when you go afield. Wear protective clothing such as leather boots and leggings if you plan to hunt in areas where there are heavy populations of poisonous snakes. If you're careful, poisonous snakes shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Are soybeans suitable for human
eating? If so, how can they be prepared?
Mrs. R. E., Mansfield
Soybeans are edible. However,
the varieties used are different
from those normally grown in
Georgia as a field crop. You might
be able to get information on
preparation from your home
economist. We mailed you a list of
places offering edible soybeans for
sale.

My cow had a premature calf

Our Vet Division advises that
from your information it is
possible that your cow has
brucellosis, a condition which af
fects the reproductive tract of the
cow. Brucellosis organisms can be
transmitted through milk of an in

veterinarian right away and have
your cow tested. Also, you should
stop drinking the milk from this
cow until you *ar#e *sure she is safe.
I recently cleared some land and burned the stumps and brush off. Will this be harmful for a vegetable
garden spot? G. S., Evans
No. As a matter of fact, it should
be helpful.
