2nd Hog Cholera Gasoline Tax Refund
Case In Georgia
Five hundred and twenty five hogs were slaughtered and buried this past week-end to stop further outbreaks of hog cholera in Tattnall County and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin is conferring with the Attorney General's office to determine whether legal action should be taken.
The feeder pigs were depopulated because sows from the Kennedy farm had been run through a sale barn there, had not been sold and were still on the premises when the feeder pigs were assembled for a sale scheduled Friday night.
Commissioner Irvin said a statewide embargo on swine movements has not been imposed following the latest outbreak but that a quarantine on all hogs in the immediate area of the outbreak is being enforced. No other feeder pig sales have been cancelled but new and more stringent regulations governing feeder pig sales are being formulated.
"At the present time all the cholera cases have been confined to
a relatively small area in Tattnall County," Irvin said. "Because it has been so localized, we hope we can control the disease in this area without burdening hog farmers throughout the state with a statewide embargo," he added.

For Georgia Farmers
by
R. Edward Brown, Jr. Extension Economist-Farm Management
College of Agriculture University of Georgia
Farmers in Georgia are allowed a gasoline tax refund on gasoline used in tractors or other farm equipment operated exclusively for agricultural purposes. On gasoline purchased through May 31, 1971 the amount of the refund is 5 1/2 cents per gallon. For purchases of gasoline after May 31, 1971 the refund is 6 1/2 cents per gallon.
Championship Rodeo
The Sheriffs Posse of DeKalb County is sponsoring a Championship Rodeo May 18 through May 20. The Rodeo, to be held at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds, will feature six events each performance plus added attractions.

The refund fs claimed on form
MFR-03 provided by the Georgia Department of Revenue. The application for refund must be filed within 18 months from the date of purchase of the gasoline.
Farmers who have not been claiming this refund should obtain a refund permit so that they may file for the state gasoline tax refund which is due them under the law. On many farms where gasoline powered equipment is used, the refund may be a sizeable amount.
There are a number of rules
governing the agricultural refunds. To begin with, the gasoline must have been purchased in quantities of 25 gallons or more at one time. The only portion of the gasoline that will qualify for the refund is the amount used in operating tractors and other farm equipment for plowing, plan-
ting, harvesting, grinding and pumping related to the production of agricultural products. Gasoline used in motor vehicles adapted for any use other than farming activities does not qualify for the refund.
Furthermore, no part of the gasoline that is used in operating farm equipment on public roads can be claimed for refund. In addition, gasoline used in performing custom farming operations and for any farm activities that are related to government payment plans such as diverted acres are not to be considered for refund.
In order to obtain a gasoline tax refund permit application, write to: Department of Revenue, Motor Fuel Tax Unit, Refund Section, 318 Trinity-Washington Building, Atlanta, Georgia 30334.

LEADING EXPORTER The leading state in exporting agricultural products? It's Illinois. Its exports of farm commodities came to $655 million last year, out of an all-states total of $7.8 billion. Illinois led* in exports of soybeans, soybean meal and oil, and feed grains. It was also an important exporter of wheat and livestock products.
PACKAGES COST They may be nice to look at, but you should keep in mind when buying ready-toserve foods, you pay for that attractive package, advises Nelle Thrash Extension home economist at the University of Georgia. Out of $101.6 billion consumers paid in one year for farm foods, $8.8 billion went into packaging materials. The food preservation expert recommends saving 9 cents per food dollar by doing more food preparation in your kitchen.
KEEP BUTTONS HANDY To keep the sewing basket
neat and save time searching for matching buttons, University of Georgia Extension home economists make this suggestion: Cut matching buttons from old garments and store them between two strips of cellophane tape. The buttons can be seen at a glance, and individual buttons can be snipped off as needed.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Among wildflower lovers, Bluets are considered the most delicate and fragile looking flower to be found. Hence, it is quite easy to understand why these small plants are also known as Innocence and Quaker-ladies.
The flowers are small and delicately fashioned, with fourpoints, resembling a star. They range in color from pale blue or almost white to sky blue with a touch of yellow in the corolla. They are produced at the tips of threadlike stems from early to midspring and will continue blooming until the first frost.
The foliage is fragile and inconspicuous and most species do not reach a height of more than 6 inches.
Bluets prefer open areas or full sun where acid soil is readily available as well as being reasonably moist and rich. They are not suited to dense shade but will tolerate filtered sunlight if the soil provides necessary nutrients.
Transplanting Bluets is about as easy as relocating a woman in a new home. Adjustment is difficult but once they are established they will thrive. Bluets self-sow or can be divided in early spring or fall.
These wildf lowers will add a quaint touch or a look of "Innocence" to the most formal, or informal garden.

abreast the latest materials showing up on the market today, such as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, new varieties and new fertilizer formulations. Not to mention many, many other items. One cannot make a mistake today because each farmer has thousands and thousands of dollars invested and the slightest mistake can put him out of business.
The objectives of the extension personnel in each county are to aid in diffusing among the people useful and practical information in agriculture and home economics and subjects relating thereto and to encourage application of same.
2nd Hog Cholera
(Continued From Page 1)
The Commissioner said the slightest indication that the disease has spread outside the Tattnall County area would bring an immediate embargo on the movement of all hogs in the state except to slaughter.
Indemnity on the 525 hogs slaughtered this past week-end will run to more than $18,000.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin signs a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Department of Agriculture calling for a tighter enforcement of meat and poultry inspection in Georgia. This agreement provides for the two agencies to integrate their program compliance activities so that
Georgia consumers are offered maximum protection against unwholesome, adulterated and deceptively labeled meat and poultry products. Com
pliance officers attempt to prevent violations, and when necessary, track down violations of inspection laws and regulations. Taking part in the signing are: William J. Carpenter, Acting Officer-in-Charge, U.S.D.A. Regional Compliance Officer, Atlanta; Clifton Ward, Assistant Georgia Commissioner-Protection; and Ralph Keill, Acting Chief, Operations
Branch, U.S.D.A. Meat and Poultry Inspection Program, Washington, D. C.
Nematode Resistant Soybean Research
Straight Line
The effects of nematodes on the roots of a susceptible soybean variety (left) as compared to the healthy root of a resistant variety.
Thousands and even millions of microscopi'c worms in Georgia's infested sandy soil can cause stunted plant growth and reduced yields for farmers in the state.
These worms or nematodes feed on the roots of plants and cause reduced root systems, root decay and. large swollen areas called galls, which reduce the water and nutrient supply to the plant.
"There might be 2,000 to 3,000 nematodes in,a handful of heavily infested soil," said Dr. N. A. Minton, U. S. Department of Agriculture nematologist located at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton.
Minton and Myron B. Parker, an agronomist at the station, are working to aid soybean growers in fighting nematodes through the use of nematode resistant soybean varieties.
Soybean varieties found to be resistant to root-knot nematodes are Hampton 266A and Bragg, while advanced breeding lines with good resistance are Florida 63-4000 and
Coker 68-41. When nematodes other than root-
knot are present, farmers may consider using a nematicide, which may not always be economically feasible. The increase per acre a farmer would get with a nematicide may not offset the cost to apply the chemical.
Minton said his research does not explain why the nematode prefers some plants to others but the microscopic worm simply does not reproduce freely on the roots of certain plants.
NEW IN CITRUS
Researchers are trying to come up with new citrus fruits all the time. Consider these now in the experimen^al stage: "tangor," a cross between tangerine and orange; "orman," an orange-lemon mixture; "tangermon," which crosses the tangerine with the lemon, and "limequat," which is a descendant of the lime and kumquat.
Is there something I can do to kill small black worms covering the pines in my front yard?
Mrs. D. W., Morgantown Yes m'am. Contact your local forester. He call tell what the worms are and advise a cure. If you had included your name and ad dress, we would have been most
happy to forward your letter for you.
***
Do I need a rooster in my hen yard other than for breeding purposes?
H. L., Doerun No sir. It is not necessary and is even undesirable. The reason being that the rooster will only eat feed, disturb the hens and fertilize eggs (which do not maintain their quality as well as unfertile eggs).
***
Love vine is all in my flower bed. Is there a spray I can use to control it?
Mrs. T. B., Toomsboro No m'am. The only control that would not harm your flowers is digging. Then burn the vines.
***
How can I control bamboo
shoots?
Mrs. R. A., Savannah
Use Dalapon spray on the young
shoots.
***
I have ground moles everywhere. What will stop them?
Mrs. L. W., Townsend Seems a lot of people have moles
this year. One of the most effective methods of getting these creatures to leave is to plant mole beans, also known as castor beans in the af fected area.
