Rehabilitation
For Handicapped
For over fifty years Vocational Rehabilitation has been getting handicapped Georgians into, or back into gainful employment. This is the sole purpose of the agency, and during this period of time approximately 170,000 disabled Georgians have been put to work by services rendered to them by this program.
Vocational Rehabilitation is a State-Federal program with over
80% of the funds coming from the Federal government. For over fifty years Vocational Rehabilitation was a part of the Department of Human Resources by legislative action. To be eligible for services from this agency, a person must have a physical or mental disability, or a behavioral disorder, and have a vocational handicap. In addition, there must be a reasonable chance of gainful employment upon completion of the planned services. In order to get the handicapped person into employment a number

of services may be rendered, some dependent on his economic circumstances, and others not.
An individual may be given a medical and vocational diagnosis to determine his eligibility, as well as to make a judgment as to services that will be necessary to get him into employment.
Other services may include medical, surgical and psychiatric treatment, hospitalization, prosthetic appliances of various types, as well as physical or occupational therapy.
If indicated, various types of training, including vocational, college, tutorial, or correspondence may be a part of the plan of rehabilitation. The plan is designed to suit the individual needs of each person.
While undergoing training or physical restoration, if there is a need, and he is economically eligible, a client may receive maintenance and transportation.
One of the finest services rendered by the agency is that of counseling and guidance. This normally begins at an early stage of the plan and continues throughout the entire period of services. In some instances a person may need only counseling and guidance, and placement on a job. Placement is an invaluable service as a "job" is the ultimate aim in Rehabilitation.

1st Hog Cholera
Case In Georgia
In Two Years Hog cholera was confirmed in Georgia for the first time in more than two years last week. One herd of 560 hogs, was slaughtered and buried in an attempt to halt spread of the disease.
An embargo was placed on the movement of all hogs in the state except for those going directly to slaughter and all feeder pig sales were cancelled.
In the meantime, a strict quarantine has been placed over a five mile radius around the farm in Tattnall County where the outbreak was confirmed. Teams of state and federal
On April 13 five herds of swine in close proximity to the hog cholera case were liquadated because they were considered to be exposed to the case. A total of 387 hogs were destroyed as contact animals to the positive hog cholera case. No further occurences have been found.
animal disease specialists are checking out all hogs and farms in the area to determine if the disease has spread.
Indemnity is paid swine owners when hogs are slaughtered to prevent the spread of cholera. Those already slaughtered represent about $18,000 in indemnity funds. Because Georgia has been declared a hog cholera free state, the federal government will pick up about 90% of the indemnity fund tab.
In the meantime, hog farmers throughout the state, but especially in south east Georgia, are urged to notify their local veterinarian immediately upon evidence of illness or death in their swine herds.
Trees, Trees Everywhere
This year the Georgia Forestry Commission grew approximately 48 million tree seedlings at its nurseries.
These trees were sold to landowners throughout the state to help replenish this great natural resource.
Food For Plants
Checked By Dept. 'A
Plant food, the chemical elements of nitrogen, phosphorus, potash and trace minerals, comprise the single most important factor in the production of all food as well as other agricultural products such as tobacco and cotton.

Are the wild onions that grow in my yard edible?
Mrs. R. C., Palmetta
They are edible but you might find the taste a little strong.

My son found a small, slender, dull black snake with a redyellowish belly and a red ring around its head. He wants to keep it for a pet but I would like to know what kind of snake it is and whether it is poisonous or not before I allow him to keep it. Can you identify?
Also, what does it eat? Mrs. W. R., Stockton
The Game and Fish Commission
identified your snake as an
Eastern ringneck snake. From
your description it is an adult.
These snakes are harmless, non-
poisonous and make excellent
pets. Their food is insects, and
earth worms. They especially favor
crickets.

How can we eliminate crawfish?
Our property is low and boggy and something is boring many holes and mounding up the dirt in round clods surrounding each hole. Someone identified our problem as crawfish.
G. P., Athens
The Game and Fish Commission advises that there is not an effective way of eliminating crawfish underground. These crustaceans follow running water under the top of the soil and are able to move quite freely. In order to eradicate them, the entire water

Department personnel concerned with fertilizer samples are experiencing one of their busiest times of the year as they work to protect the interest of Georgia farmers.
The quality and proper mixture of every pound of fertilizer sold in Georgia is backed up by a state-wide network of inspectors and the department laboratory to insure that fertilizer or plant food mixtures sold in the state are properly manufactured and labeled.
Inspectors use a hollow tube known as a "probe stick" to pull samples for laboratory testing. The probe sticks are used to probe into bags or bulk quantities of fertilizer to get a representative sample of the entire lot.
When the sample arrives in Atlanta, lab personnel record the sample and give it a laboratory number. They then "riffle" or mix the sample better and grind the granular

PLANT DRAINAGE Drainage is important for good appearance and healthy growth of plants, according to T. G. Williams, Extension landscape department head at the University of Georgia. He recommends providing a proper run-off of surface water prior to planting trees and shrubs. If the area has steep grade, terraces with cover such as evergreen ground shrubs are essential.
STOP STEAM-UP If your bathroom reminds you of a tropical rain forest following a hot bath, here's a tip from University of Georgia Extension home economists to eliminate the steam-up problem. Simply run cold water in the bathtub before adding hot water. No steam.
EASY GARDENING Good news for gardeners who think gardening is too hard. Low-maintenance gardens are growing in popularity. They use ground covers such as small rocks, pebbles, crushed marble, shredded tree bark, wood chips and pine needles. Landscape architects say these materials are best adapted to contemporary gardens and are well suited for use around buildings of modern design.

What
This member of the iris family is a common sight along roadways and swamps from South Carolina to Florida and west to Missouri. Its close cousin travels north as far as New England and Minnesota but bloom size is greatly reduced.
Southern Blue Flag can be found in bloom from May through August. These flowers are usually blue or blue-purple but they lack the size, intricate color combinations and prominent beards of the garden varieties. Nevertheless, they are one of the most beautiful natural flowers in the plant kingdom.
This variety of iris is quite easy to grow and can be transplanted at any stage of growth. Small sections can be removed from large clumps and within two growing seasons, it will have completely replaced itself with new plants.
The Blue Flag has round smooth stems which rise to a height of two or three feet producing a thicket of tapering swordlike leaves. Because of the presence in the rootstock of a bitter resinous substance which causes intestinal upsets, this species is also known in some localities as Poison Flag. This plant is readily found throughout Africa as this is the center of distribution for the Iris family.

Rehabilitation
(Continued From Page 1) Vocational Rehabilitation has
received strong support from governors, legislators, and other government officials, as well as many agencies, both public and private, in assisting disabled persons to become useful, productive and selfsustaining citizens. We believe that every citizen should have the opportunity to earn his way in life, to the fullest extent possible.
Applications for services may be made directly to Vocational Rehabilitation offices located in many of the principal cities of Georgia, or writing to Vocational Rehabilitation, 629 State Office Building, Atlanta 30334.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
L. S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Dr. Earl L. Butz recently visited Georgia and met with Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and other agricultural leaders and Georgia farmers. Following an agricultural discussion luncheon, Commissioner Irvin, Secretary Butz, and
Under Secretary of Agriculture J. Phil Campbell shake hands with Georgia House Agriculture Committee members Paul E. Nessmith and Jones W. Lane, both of Statesboro.
Plant Food
(Continued From Page 1) fertilizer to make it more suitable for laboratory testing.
After grinding, it is weighed to measure the proper proportion for testing, then run through individual laboratories to test for percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus, potash and trace elements.
Should the laboratory tests reveal an improper mixture or unbalance of plant food elements in variance with the manufacturer's guaranteed analysis, the manufacturer is notified. At the same time, if the unbalance is sufficient to create production problems for farmers who have used the fertilizer material, they are notified and are qualified for a refund on the purchase price.
Today the Department is sampling and testing more plant food and lime than ever before. Inspectors pulled some 13,500 samples last year as compared with 12,500 in 1970 and 10,000 in 1969. As a comparison, only 9,000 samples were pulled in 1968 and only 4,000 in 1967.
The Georgia Sweet Potato Prin cess, Lynn Summerlin of Pearson, recently presented Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and other government officials with some of Georgia's sweet potatoes. Georgia produces four and onehalf million dollars worth of sweet potatoes annually.
