Residues Worry Tobacco Growers
Tobacco growers in Georgia have been confronted with many problems since the beginning of tobacco production in this state. This covers a period of more than 50 years.
Over this period of time, Georgia tobacco growers have estab-
lished a reputation of producing the finest flue cured tobacco in the World.
Georgia tobacco has and continues to be in great demand throughout the world. Sixty-five to seventy percent of the tobacco produced in Georgia finds its way into export channels. Because of this, Georgia tobacco

growers have enjoyed a good position at the market place.
However, the accomplishments made in the past will not suffice for the future. In order to maintain a good reputation, a continued effort must be made to improve the quality of the golden leaf produced in Georgia.
The area of tobacco production of most concern at the present time is pesticide residues on tobacco. Certain foreign countries are beginning to spell out in plain language the amount of pesticide residue that will be allowed on tobacco moving into their country.
However, at the present time the final law has not been drawn, but from all indications Georgia tobacco growers are going to have to stop the use of chemicals that are not recommended for use on tobacco.
Chemical analysis of samples of tobacco taken from the warehouse floors in Georgia in 1971 clearly pointed out that materials were used on tobacco which were not recommended. Several of the samples analyzed showed toxaphene residues.
A few growers using a chemical such as toxaphene on tobacco can cause the Georgia tobacco to be in less demand. We could very easily lose a 65 million dollar market in a matter of two or three years.
If this does occur, for all practical purposes, Georgia could be out of the tobacco producing business.
Every tobacco grower and chemical dealer has a responsibility of making sure that only chemicals cleared and recommended for tobacco are used.

Labels Required
On All Clothing
Permanent care labels giving instructions for care and maintenance will be required on all articles of clothing, leaving a manufacturer after July 3.
This rule covers all garments, including hosiery, that require care and maintenance for their use and enjoyment. Piece goods for home sewing of apparel must be accompanied by care labels that may be attached to articles by sewing, ironing, etc.
Footwear, gloves and headwear are not covered by this Federal Trade Commission rule.
Care-label instructions must include three things: (1) inform consumer how to wash, dry, iron, bleach, dry clean or otherwise regularly care for and maintain a particular article (2) warn consumer about any maintenance procedure that may seem to apply, but doesn't (looks washable but must be dry cleaned for example) (3) be easily found on an item (not hidden in a pocket, etc.)
Naturally it will take some time before all items will have this information. But you can look forward to the day when knowing how to care for an article just means checking the permanently attached label.

Spring Brings Flowers,

Showers, Fusiform Rust

During the early weeks of spring, many home owners notice swellings on the limbs and trunks of their pine trees producing a bright orange dust.

Peach Committee,
Alternates, Named
The U. S. Department of Agriculture has announced the appointment of eight members and alternates to the Georgia Peach Industry Committee. The committee administers the federal marketing agreement and order which regulates the handling of fresh peaches grown in Georgia.
North Georgia District members and alternates are: C. L. Mason and Charles L. Mason Jr., both of Madison; Louis N. Mallory of Thomaston, and B. R. Miller of Griffin.
Members and alternates for the Central Georgia District are: William H. Parker and Edward Wainwright, both of Reynolds; Edgar L. Duke Jr., and William J. Wilson, both of Fort Valley; J. Marion Porter and Joe W. Meadows, both of Cochran; Otis B. Gunn of Centerville and J. T. Mathews Jr. of Roberta.
Members and alternates for the South Georgia District are: Howard Lawson of Morven, and Edgar L. Jones of Barney; Herbert Saliba of Byromville, and James P. Brown of Montezuma.
Advisory Horse Show
Committee Formed
The South Georgia Horse Show Exhibitors have appointed an advisory committee for horse shows in that area. Anyone wishing assistance may contact John Hall, 2204 Trowbridge Road, Albany 31701, or Mrs. Carol Brehmer, 4300 Old Dawson Road, Albany 31701.

The disease responsible for this condition is the rust fungus, Cronartium fusiforme. It is commonly called southern fusiform rust, canker rust, cronartium rust, fusiform canker, or simply fusiform rust.
This rust fungus enjoys the position of prime importance in regard to destruction and damage to southern pines by a forest disease. The first evidence is usually a small spindle-shaped swelling on the stem of a seedling or on the branch of a tree.
The orange colored spores that are produced by the disease each spring are the means by which the disease spreads. These orange spores are blown by the wind to oak trees which are alternate hosts.
These spores cannot reinfect pine trees until they pass through a stage of growth on the leaves of various oak trees. After a period of growth on the oak trees, spores are then blown by wind back to infect other pines.
Branch cankers, closer than 18 inches to the stem of the tree, can infect the main stem; however, cankers further out than this usually results only in the death of the infected branch.
Fusiform rust is most pronounced in young trees from one to 15 years old. Older, trees generally suffer only superficial infection of branches.
Loss from fusiform rust can be reduced by planting good quality seedlings, pruning of branch cankers, and removal of infected trees.
Additional information can be obtained by contacting your local forestry unit or county agent.

Brittle Bones
In Chickens
Lack of exercise is an important cause of brittle bones in caged broilers.
Previous studies by ARS scientists showed their caged broilers had weaker bones than did floor-raised birds, and lack of exercise was suspected as a contributing cause.
To test their supposition, ARS poultry scientists Lloyd H. Littlefield, Thomas E. Nightingale, and John W. Merkley, Georgetown, Del., fashioned plastic casts and harnesses to immobilize one wing on each of six 20-week-old broilers. The birds were placed on littercovered floors and were killed after 16 days and examined.
Wings with casts weighed significantly less and the humerus, ulna, and radius bones had significantly lower breaking strengths than bones in uncasted wings.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor:

With the special horse issue just out, please ask the clubs

to remember the children and beginners. Children want to

show their ponies also, and the women would like to, too,

but don't have the time to work with a horse seven days a

week like, a man and should not be expected to compete

with them.

What Aw

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Born in the barbarian uplands of Aztec Mexico, the giant Dahlia still reflects more of a feeling of savage splendor than it does of ordered civilization. There are Dahlias which display a neat and geometrical configuration. However, two varieties, the "Decorative" and "Cactus" exemplify the wild, untamed beauty of their heritage. These particular varieties produce blooms of dinnerplate size in spectacular summer colors.
For all their size and speedy growth, however, the big Dahlias are subject to a remarkable amount of control. You can make them feature one big bloom per stem or even one monster per plant, simply by disbudding in the early stages. Or you can simply let them bloom as they please and have blooms from summer through early fall.
The Decorative Dahlias have relatively flat petals, while the petals on the Cactus are rolled or "quilled" to points. The record size of these flowers is 17" across. They are often called a "man's flower" because they are so big and even a "child's flower" because they show results in a hurry.
The first bud to appear will usually make the best flower. Secondary buds sprout from side shoots. Exhibition-sized blooms are made by ruthlessly pinching out every bud but the first. If let alone, the entire plant not only produces many blooms, but continues to do so again and again they are picked up to the first frost.

Tobacco Growers
(Continued From Page 1)
only have to contact the county agent in their county to be sure a material is suggested for use on tobacco.
Read the label at least three times before using a material on tobacco.
Every tobacco grower in Georgia should ask himself this question can we afford to lose a 65 million dollar market?
CLEAN FIREPLACE
If you have a fireplace and use it often, you're faced with the problem of dingy, smut-covered bricks around the opening. Mary Frances White, University of Georgia Extension home economist, recommends plain yellow vinegar.

Members of the Agricultural Economics Club of the University of Georgia visited Commissioner Irvin recently to introduce their club sweetheart, Heather Fosgate. Shown with Heather and Mr. Irvin are Lucius Adkins, club president and Bill Davis, committee chairman.

Enclosed in the bottle is some chicken noodle soup I purchased from a local store. Are the particles in the soup glass or maybe sand?
M. W., Covington
Our Consumer Protection division identified the material as crystals very closely resembling salt. The material is definitely not glass, plastic, or sand. In the future when you find some extraneous material in any food, if you will notify us of the details concerning the manufacturer, etc., our inspectors can collect official samples and accomplish a more adequate follow up.

I have some sort of sticker that grows in my lawn grass. They are similar to sand spurs, only smaller. They really hurt bare feet.
No Name, Milledgeville

We could have answered your question much sooner if you had in

cluded your name and address. Our Plant division advises that you

could possibly have spur weed. Try 2,4-D or Silvex spray for control.

May we suggest that you contact your county agent for assistance with

this.

What will rid my house of "dirt daubers"? They make nests out of mud on the side of the house and come in through the air conditioning vents.
W. H., Meridian

Spray the "dirt daubers" when they start building their nests, preferably in the late afternoon, with lindane or Chlordane.

Wild onions are taking over my lawn. What can I use? Mrs. P. H., Royston
Use 2,4-D or a weed wax bar. These are available at garden stores. Spray in the spring and in the fall. It may take several years to get rid of all the onions.

What can I use to make my horse's coat shine? I thought it was Linseed oil but the directions say it is not to be taken internally.
Mrs. W. B., Rome
Our Equine division advises that you should feed your horse cotton seed meal. This meal contains oil which is obtained from crushing the cotton seed. Mix the meal with your regular horse feed. There are also several commercial products on the market which will give the same results. After your horse sheds his winter coat of hair, you may also rub him with oil, which will make the hair shine. Be sure to have your vet worm your horse.

Watering Tip
If you have very many potted plants in your house and find it's a messy job to keep them watered this should help.
Cut off both ends of a plastic tooth brush holder. Place one end of the tube in the soil in the flowerpot and fill it with water about once a week (depending on the size of the plant).
This saves a great deal of time and avoids wet table tops. You may also put plant food in the tube as you water your plants.
