run the second oldest industry known to man. Our business is producing the makings for our southern "staff of life" -- corn bread.
At one time there were close to 1200 mills here in Georgia. The first industry built in any settlement was usually its mill. As our transportation system improved it was no longer

A well cared for garden can supply the family with a variety of nutritious, healthful vegetables to be enjoyed fresh or preserved for later use in addition to savings in the food budget.

Many garden areas that used to produce beautiful crops now do not produce well. In many instances this is due to a build-up of nematodes and other soil borne diseases brought about by lack of rotation and by improper fertilization and liming

In 1951 the millers formed the Georgia Corn Millers Association. The purpose of the association is to improve our product and to promote its use. Today the association has 27 members, representing 95 per cent of the mills in Georgia.

On February 19, Georgians will honor the state's trees by taking part in the 81st anniversary of Arbor Day in Georgia.
Thousands of young trees will be planted by youngsters throughout the state. School children, teachers, garden clubs, agricultural groups, and civic and fraternal organizations will dedicate this day to recognizing the value of our vast tree crop.
In 1890, the Georgia legislature first wrote into Georgia law the ways and means by which we celebrate our state Arbor Day. In 1941, the General Assembly set the date of Arbor Day as the third Friday in February.

New varieties that are not on the recommended list may or may not do well in a given area and should be tried on a limited basis until their adaptability is determined.
Seeds and Plants. The quality of vegetable seed and plants varies considerably from different sources. Always buy seed from a reputable seed dealer. Make sure the kind, variety, percentage germination and date of testing are marked on the package.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

7otio?
The potato (Solanum
tubersum: Solanum thought to be
from the Latin for quieting,
perhaps in allusion to the
dangerously narcotic properties
of some species) is of the genus nightshade.
Most vegetables have been
credited with healing power at
one time or another in their
history, and the potato is no exception.
The Irish said water from boiled potatoes was good for
rubbing on aches, sprains and broken bones. And, at one time in
Newfoundland, people wore
baked, sliced potatoes in
stockings around their necks to cure sore throats.
The earliest Spanish chronicler of the potato tells us
that it originally grew far up in
the Andes, where the Incas valued
it highly. In this region where it
freezes, at least a little every
month, potatoes were valued for
their fondness for coolness.
This plant has become the
staple vegetable crop of the
temperate world within the last
150 years. Its high starch content
and food value make it a most
important garden plant.
Plan Gardens
(Continued from page 1)
to determine needs of each vegetable and fertilize accordingly.
Do not place the fertilizer too close to the seed or plants as this can burn the roots. For best results, put a portion of the fertilizer (not over 600 pounds per acre) about three inches to the side and two inches below the seed level. The remainder can be broadcast or applied as a supplemental side dressing.
Fumigation for Nematode Control. Most vegetable crops are susceptible to root-knot nematode damage. The population of nematodes can be reduced by rotation with corn or other grain crops, early crop disposal, and by soil fumigation. Both nemagon and fumazone will do a good job of nematode control if properly used.
Land should be well-prepared and rows opened six to eight inches deep, the fumigant applied in the bottom of the furrow, then covered immediately with soil to the original level. Be sure to follow instructions on the label when using these materials.
Planting the Garden - Plant cold hardy crops such as turnips, cabbage, Irish potatoes and English peas several weeks before the predicted last killing frost. Cold susceptible crops such as tomatoes, beans, pepper, etc., should not be planted until danger of frost is over.
It is best to make successive plantings of crops such as beans, Southern peas and corn to make them available over a longer period of time.
Weed Control - Weeds compete for nutrients and moisture and make diseases and insects more difficult to control. Keep the garden weed-free by shallow cultivation or hoeing.
Insect and Disease Control Follow a preventive spray or dusting program to prevent a build-up of these pests. Use only recommended materials at the recommended rates.
Irrigation - A good thorough watering once a week should be adequate when ample rainfall does not occur. Do not over-water and when possible, use a seep hose to prevent wetting the leaves.
More detailed information on the above subjects is available in Extension publications, "Gardening", "Control Diseases in Your Home Garden", and "Home Vegetable Garden Insects", available at your county agent's office.

A ten-month old heifer owned by Rollins Ranch has beaten the world's best females to become the 1971 National Grand Champion Polled Hereford Heifer, at the 48th Annual Polled Hereford Show, Denver, Colo. The calf, RR Miss Canam, bred at Duluth, Ga., was sired by Rollins' Canam Investor, crowned National G^and Champion Polled Hereford Bull in 1969. This is the first Canam Investor calf ever shown.
