"Looking Back Provides Goals"
A new year is upon us. This is a time for everyone to assess the good and the bad of the past 12 months and then to make resolutions for the coming year.
How should these practices of assessing and resolving be ap-
plied to the farmers and consumers of Georgia?
In 1971, most of Georgia's farmers enjoyed either bumper yields on their crops or good prices where yields were not as favorable. Producing enough food and fiber to feed and clothe the people of our state and nation is no longer a problem. For many years we have over produced.
The consumer, more than the farmer, can be thankful for this. Many consumers complain about subsidies paid to the farmers who over produce. And yet, these subsidies benefit the consumer more than they do the farmer. For without them, the farmer would be inclined to cut his yield and therefore prices would soar. The government practice of subsidizing insures adequate food and fiber for the nation and allows the farmer a little return for this blessing he provides.
And that brings us to the resolution part of the new year. Marketing and pricing are still the biggest problems that most Georgia commodity groups face. I believe in 1972 we should study our yields, and decide what our goals should be not based solely on how much more can we produce, but how much do we need to produce and then what is the best way to market our goods in order to have a fairer share of the retail dollar.
Georgia farmers need not resolve to produce more in 1972, but rather to study and work for better marketing and pricing solutions.
Consumers should resolve to learn more, and the farm groups can help with this, about farm production, marketing and pricing. Find out where your food dollar is going and how it compares to other dollars that you spend. You may be very surprised to find inflation has been kinder to the food dollar than to any other.
And farmers let us resolve to work together, to study our past and plan for our future. A plan for producing and marketing can benefit us all by providing a better return for our labors.
I wish for you bumper yields, systematic marketing, and good prices for a prosperous 1972. And for your families, all the happiness that God can bestow.

Tax Savings On Timber
C. Nelson Brightwell Head, Extension Forestry Department
Timber owners often pay more income tax than the law requires. This is par-

200,000 persons own forest land in Georgia, including some 170,000 farmers. A loss of potential tax savings each year by these persons results in an economic loss to our state.
The failure to use special provisions relating to timber results in a higher tax bill. Two of the more

savings. Since timber is a long-term crop,
it is clearly a capital asset, and timber growth is an increase in the
value of that asset. Congress recognized this in authorizing taxation of timber income at capital gain rates rather than at ordinary in-
come rates. The use of capital gain provisions

reduce your tax bill considerably. It
is far less expensive, even in the lower tax brackets, to pay tax on a long-term capital gain than to pay
on ordinary income. Timber owners need to be aware
of these and other special provisions relating to timber transactions. It is important that the significance of these provisions be understood
before timber is sold. It may be too late afterward.

savings are possible on timber sales.
When can quince seed be planted and how long before they bear? Mrs. D. M., Washington
The plant people advised that flowering quince should be propagated by
cutting or layering. The regular fruiting quince is usually grafted, but can
be grown from seed. It may take from seven to ten years to bear from seed. ***
I recently bought two pots of palms (tropical plants) that are about 3 1/2 feet tall with plenty of young ones around. How do I take care of these?
A. L., Rome These plants should be kept warm, grown in diffused sun light with warm
temperatures and moderate humidity. You should cut off the new sprouts
and pot in separate pots with reg*ula*r* potting soil.
We found a hornet's nest in the woods and slipped a plastic bag over it. Was this safe to do? (Must have been, no one was stung.) When can we take the bag off and if there are any hornets in it, why haven't they come out?
E. G., Atlanta Our Entomology division advises that there are no hornets after the first cold spell. If you have not seen any then the creatures are gone. It is safe to
take the plastic bag off now. ***
Could you identify the enclosed pecans for me? I have been told they are
several things.
J. B., Boston
We regret that we could not identify the pecans. May we suggest that you
contact your county agent and let him see the tree also. Perhaps he can help
you.

We have heard that it is good for burns and chapped skin.
Removing Old Mulch
May Not Help Shrubs
Some gardeners remove the old mulch from around their shrubs each year and add fresh material. This time-consuming practice is usually unnecessary. It is possible to add new material on top of an old mulch without detrimental effect.
Only in situations where there is a heavy six to eight inch accumulation of decomposed organic matter would it be desirable to remove the old material. Some gardeners become concerned and remove the mulch when they notice a mass of white fungus growth inside decomposing material.
This is not necessary since the fungi which cause this growth are not parasites on plants, but attack only dead organic material.
Cow leed The average dairy cow eats about 11 pounds of hay per day.
