Conservation
Vital To Future
Georgia ranks among the highest states in the nation in conservation efforts and achievements.
This is a record of which all Georgians can be proud because the preservation of our water, soil and forests, is so vital to the future wellbeing of our state and its people that
no one can afford to neglect this area of endeavor.
This is true of urban interests as well as farmers and landowners. The myth that soil and water conservation is strictly a rural problem must be banished. Every city dweller has as much at stake in what happens to our land and water as country people, although those who live nearer the

land tend to be much more aware of the importance of conservation. We are all engaged in promoting the progress of Georgia - both urban and rural - and in the final analysis, what benefits one benefits the other.
Unfortunately, with the rapid urbanization of our state and the concentration of people in and around large cities, there is a tendency to lose sight of the need for conservation programs. At the same time, however, the changing face of pur Georgia, its rapid industrialization and increasing population make conservation all the more important.
This is particularly true with respect to water. This precious resource is important to all of us. No other element is more vital to the health and welfare of the people and to the economic advancement of Georgia.
In truth, water is the great common denominator with which every man, woman and child has experience. It gives life and promotes prosperity when controlled and conserved, but on rampage or allowed to become polluted, it can destroy life and lay waste to our land.
Georgia is keenly aware of the problems of land and water conservation and more and more attention is being focused on finding solutions to insure the conservation of our natural resources for generations yet unborn.
I am convinced that Soil and Water Conservation Districts have an immensely important part to play in the future growth of Georgia, just as they have contributed to the tremendous progress already being experienced.

Use Caution Buying

Miracle Fertilizers
Each year Georgia farmers are exposed to extravagant claims for new "miracle fertilizers" on the market.
These products are often not fertilizers at all but by-products of some industrial process or a weak water solution of some organic material which has no value.
The Georgia Plant Food Act of 1970 requires that all fertilizer materials be registered with the Department of Agriculture and that they meet certain minimum specifications. Most of the so-called "miracle fertilizers" do not meet these specifications and are therefore marketed as soil conditioners. They, therefore, are not required to bear a guaranteed analysis on the label.
Other claims are made for 100% availability of the nutrients. No claim of this sort can be made for any nutrient with qualification.
Radical claims for superiority of foliar application should be questioned, especially on field crops. Generally foliar applications must be made more often in order to maintain uniform crop response.
Before considering the purchase of any fertilizer material for which unusual claims may be made, the following should be done:

Ga.'s"Miss Wool"
Laurie Rowe, age 20, has been selected to represent nine Southern states in the annual "Miss Wool of America" pageant in San Angelo, Texas, in June. Laurie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Rowe of Tifton.
Paulette Huddleston, age 15, represented the Southern states in January in the 25th annual "Make It Yourself With Wool" contest held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Paulette is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Huddleston of Chatsworth.
The nine states represented are Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Louisiana.
Both contests are sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary of the National Wool Growers Association and the American Wool Council.

Supermarket Computers

Help Stores, Housewife

A revolutionary computerized system to speed up supermarket checkouts promises greater efficiency and economy for both consumers and the food trade industry.
For instance: The system will eliminate ring-up error, insure accurate pricing, and provide customers with itemized and detailed records of purchasing. For the food industry, it will cut labor and management costs by eliminating individual marking and changing of prices, automating the ordering of shelf replacements, and providing a continuous inventory.

Corn Blight Loans

Available From U.S.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture has promised to make emergency loans available to all farmers who suffered severe losses because of corn blight or unfavorable weather conditions, according to Senator Herman Talmadge, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Agricultural Credit and Rural Electrification.
There was dissatisfaction with the Department of Agriculture's decision to designate only 17 counties as emergency loan areas. The designated counties are Appling, Bacon, Baldwin, Burke, Jeff Davis, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, Miller, Montgomery, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Washington, Wayne, Wheeler, and Wilkihson.
The Department of Agriculture has assured that loans will be available on an individual basis to farmers in other counties who have suffered severe losses. Although a farmer may live in a county not designated as an emergency loan area, he is eligible for low interest emergency loans if he suffered a severe loss and cannot get credit from other sources.

The improved checkout system and its performance specifications were conceived by ARS transportation and facilities specialists.
Basically, four pieces of equipment are linked to form the computerized checkout system a tabulator, a teletype, a computer, and the key cpmponent - an electronic scanner that "reads" coded labels on
the grocery items. The code label, a small round disk
affixed by the food manufacturers, can record 100 million characters to identify the specific size, brand, and weight of grocery products.
At the checkout counter, the cashier gently touches the scanner to the code label on each item of a grocery order. The scanner reads the code and sends the information to the computer, which identifies the product and its current price. Then the name of the product together with its total price and unit price is relayed to the tabulator, and the information
is printed on the receipt tape. At the same time, the price of
each item as it is checked through is displayed visually on the tabulator. The computer automatically adjusts charges for special sale items that sell for less per package when more
than one is purchased, for example, spaghetti selling for 35 cents each or 3
for $1. Regardless of where in the order
they appear, the computer would charge 35 cents for the first two packages, then only 30 cents for the third package when it is checked
through. All special sale items are iden-
tified on the receipt tape with a star. When the entire order has been

THE MARKET BULLETIN

I would like some information on gallberry -- the kind that grows in South Georgia that makes such good honey. Will it grow in my area?
J.D.P., Calhoun

Gallberry, I. glabra, grows mostly in wet sandy soil in South Georgia but

will grow in your area.

***

I want to root a magnolia. Is it possible? N.J.S., Forest Park

Azaleos -- Greek name for our well known shrub azalea, meaning "dry" in allusion to the old and false idea that the plants require dry sites. It is celebrated in folklore and legend and much admired for its old-fashioned mound of beautiful blossoms. It is a thirsty plant of the Heath family, not technically different from rhododendrons except that it has smaller, thinner leaves.
Hundreds of azalea varieties are available in Georgia (advertised weekly in our BULLETIN and at all nurseries) and variety selection is very important in any section of the state. Many gardeners try to grow poorly adapted varieties that often give poor results year after year. All may be grown in pots and brought into bloom in winter if they are forced slowly and at relatively low temperatures which will prevent dropping of foliage and assure even development of the flowers. Like most flowering plants, azaleas should be kept out of drafts and direct sunlight.
Some of the most widely grown is the group known as the Kurume azaleas, named from that city in Japan. This is called "dwarf" azalea by many Georgia gardeners. Most of this variety have good cold hardiness that makes them grow well in the northern half of Georgia. Of the Indian varieties, Formosa is by far the most popular Southern Indian variety in Georgia.
The Chinese have a folk tale about a boy who sought his long lost brother in vain and finally in exhaustion, he wept bitter tears of blood from which the plant developed that we know as the azalea. It is the emblem of devotion and brotherly love... but despite its sad origin, the azalea is a joy to behold and a flowering treasure to brighten late winter days.
A pamphlet AZALEA CULTURE FOR GEORGIA GARDENERS is published by the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia College of Agriculture, Athens, which will greatly benefit gardeners in selecting the varieties suitable for their particular section of Georgia._______________
SPITTLEBUGS
Do you have any spittlebugs? Entomologists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service say if you have Coastal Bermuda grass you probably know the damage these pests can cause. Contact your county Extension agent for recommended control measures.

Our magnolia expert (we call him Maggie) advised that there are two types of magnolias. Southern magnolia is grown from seed and Oriental magnolia is rooted, though extremely hard to do. We suggest that you transplant a small one, less you be disa*pp* o*inted.
Can you tell me how to get rid of snails? They even come into the house and I can't stand that.
Mrs. N.H.R.

Beer in small flat pans.

***

How can I keep rats out of my dresser drawers? I've tried every rat killer on the market and they continue to get in the drawers.
Mrs. M.M., Pinehurst

Moth ball crystals or moth balls should repel them. ***
I have little insects that look like gnats, only larger, in my kitchen. They are around a flower I have growing in soil. How can I kill them and their eggs?
Mrs. W.H.K., Rising Fawn

These are fungus gnats and raise in moist soil and decaying food. They feed on the fungus growth from the food. Chlordane or Diazinon around the bottom of your plant will control the*m* .*
What should I do for a running rose bush that has a white mold-like substance on the leaves and stems?
Mrs. M.M.M., Meigs

Spray with Phaltan, available at your local feed and seed store or garden

center.

***

I have two Golden Japanese persimmon trees that have only had fruit twice. I have never done anything for these trees. Should I?
B.C., Cochran

Yes sir. Fertilize them with 6-12-12 or 5-10-15 fertilizer. ***
Where do I send my seed to be tested? Mrs. W.S.G., Adel

Send the seed to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Seed Division, 19 Hunter Street, S.W., Atlanta, 30334.

Supermarket Miracle Fertilizers (Continued from page 1)

(Continued from page 1)
checked out, the customer receives a tape itemizing each purchase by name along with package price and unit price. In addition, at the bottom of the tape the total cost of the order is shown together with any tax, number of stamps due if they're used, any credits for "cents off" coupons, and the adjusted total.
The computerized system, while benefiting the consumer, holds even greater potential for the food trade by providing a broad spectrum of management information and service.
As groceries are checked out, the computer, which can service as many as 60 checkout counters simultaneously, maintains a continuous stock inventory. At any given moment - but usually at the close of the business day - the teletype can be activated to retrieve inventory data from the computer and print it out on a sheet. The sheet contains the name and code number of each product, the quantity on hand at the beginning of the day, the quantity sold, and the remaining stock balance.
In case of price changes, the computer simply is reprogramed to match a particular product with its new price, thus eliminating marking out of one price on a product and adding a new one. Similar efficiencies will be available at the warehouse.
Further, regional and national offices will be better able to monitor and predict merchandising trends.

(1) Examine the label or tag to determine if the product is a properly registered fertilizer material as required by Georgia Law.
(2) Request research data supporting claims made for the product.
(3) Compare the cost with that of recognized fertilizer materials.
(4) Remember that the best way to get your moneys worth is to have your fertilizer and lime needs determined by soil analysis and make application of recognized fertilizers on these recommendations.
Should you be approached with such a product, contact your local County Extension Agent, local Vocational Agriculture Instructor, or the Georgia Department of Agriculture at 404-656-3637.
