Nurseryman 9s
Challenge
The Georgia nurseryman has faced many changes in the last ten years. The emphasis placed on ecology by Presidents Johnson and Nixon has gained him greater prominence on the local scene.
The ever increasing cost of doing business coupled with stiffer competition from other sources has
caused him to look deeper into his method of operation.
The consumer with more leisure time on his hands and more money to spend on landscaping has
challenged the nurseryman to produce more beautiful and useful plants.
The nurseryman is fortunate that he plays an important role in pollution control. He is confronted with producing trees and shrubs that will survive city and suburban smog and help clean the dirty air.
City trees that are devoured by beetle or bulldozer must be replaced if oxygen levels are to be kept at
(Our guest columnist this week ts Cecil Brown, President, Georgia Nurserymen's Association, 4124 North Elm Street, Covington, 3020S.)
human survival level. To help control our sanity, noise pollution from trucks, cars, trains, lawnmowers, motorbikes, and neighbor's kids can be abated by planting screens of shrubs and trees.
Here again the nurseryman has an opportunity to offer plants that will fit the demands for height, density, long-life, and aesthetic appeal.
Trade associations are becoming more important to the alert nurseryman. If he is to look after an expanding business and cope with the problems that arise from it, he does not have time to research every new method and procedure that applies to his work nor lobby for or against every legislative act that concerns him.
A nursery association with an active legislative committee can do this for him along with hundreds of other members at the same time with the same expense involved. In fact I don't know of any committeemen that get reimbursed for their time.
Periodicals sent out by the associations keep the nurseryman abreast of things being done on research projects and offer useful information.
Although organized by and for their members these groups are by no means selfish in nature. Any major benefit gained for its members 'especially legislative) is enjoyed by non-members also
It is unfortunate that manynurserymen still do not avail them selves of the benefits derived from membership in one of the many nursery associations in the state.

Georgia Department of Agriculture representatives said that warehouse tickets showing the lot number, grower's name, and weight of the tobacco were already on the pile of tobacco when it was brought into the warehouse and that the tobacco was placed on the floor and sold without being weighed on the Georgia scales provided for this purpose.

The Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory, approaching its first anniversary, is being called upon more and more by Georgia producers
to aid with their crops.

Extension agronomist in charge of the center, is that of a cotton farmer, who thought his young crop was showing signs of boron deficiency.
"Arrangements were made to fly on boron (application by plane). However, an industrial agronomist, suspicious of the symptoms, collected leaves for a plant analysis. The deficiency was not boron, so the farmer saved $5,000 and possibly a lost crop," Jones said.
According to Jones, 44,001 soil samples and 26,339 plant tissue

Mishandling Meat

A.B., Winokur
We are advised by the treated wood posts expert, (better known as "old stand up in the road") that treated wood posts may be set in concrete successfully.

Please tell me if there is any kaolin or whatever in the enclosed specimen I took from my farm.
S.C., Augusta

We asked the Department of Mines, Mining, and Geology to check out the

situation. They found some kaolin in the specimen, however not of the com-

mercial quality.

I have catalpa trees but no worms. Do I have to put worms on the trees to start them?
B.J., Graves

The Game and Fish Commission advises that worms will have to be placed on HIP trees this season in order to have a worm crop next season.

I need some information on Dahlias. What do I do to keep the bulbs from rotting 9
Mrs. W.S., Manchester

Just so happens we have a pamphlet for this too. We mailed you one for bulb rotting of Dahlias.

Causes Spoilage
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has recently received complaints from housewives of spoiled meat. Some have complained of finding worms in meat after it is bought.
This is usually due to mishandling of meat after it is purchased. A few simple guidelines should be followed to prevent meat from spoiling.
Ail meat should be protected from any possibility of flies, any flies. Meat should not be left on kitchen counters, either day or night.
Upon purchase, meat should be brought home, examined, and immediately placed in refrigerator until cooking. Meat should be placed immediately in the cooking vessel when the meal is begun.
After cooking, either cover or replace the meat in the refrigerator. In addition, all precautions should be taken by homeowners to eliminate all fly breeding places around the home and farm buildings. This means rubbish piles, manure piles, and other areas which might harbor and provide fly breeding areas.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
Please inform me where I can obtain information on family reunions. How would you go about organizing and conducting one. I need this information as soon as possible.
Mrs. James B. Lawrence Route 1 Macon, Georgia 31204
(Editor's note: We thought that others might also be interested in this information so we are answering your request below.
1. Contact all relatives in the family by letter and inquire whether they are interested in a family reunion and for them to suggest a time and place.
2. Decide whether family interest is sufficient to have a reunion and if so, decide on a date and place.
3. Notify all members of when the reunion is planned and be sure to include a description or procedure for food, i.e. everyone brings dishes of their own, catered by local restaurant, old fashioned Bar-B-Que cooked by some of the relatives closely located to the selected site.
4-Have a guest register for all those attending to sign their name and address so they may be contacted easily for future plans.
It often takes months to effectively prepare for a family reunion. Be sure to enlist the help of other family members to assist you with the details.)

THE MARKET BULLETIN

What 91
When one thinks ot wildflowers, seldom do they consider plants that do not grow in open meadows or rich woodlands. However, there are many varieties of native growth along our seashores, one of the most familiar being the Hudsonia.
This unique small shrub which looks like heather but isn't even in the same family serves as a ground cover and accent on dunes, slopes and hills where it will be near plenty of full sun and either fresh or salt water.
It is resistant to wind and shifting sand and is very popular in seashore gardens and even dry sunny rock gardens if the same sandy, acid soil is duplicated. Unlike most wildflowers, it does not need rich humus earth to prosper.
Hudsonia does not respond favorably to transplanting unless small specimens are taken after a rainfall. Be sure to include as many of the fine roots as possible when digging. Once they are established, however, plants of Hudsonia self-sow readily.
The lovely golden-yellow flowers, barely one quarter of an inch across, crowd along the terminal ends of the short branches throughout spring and mid-summer. The tiny, scalelike leaves of the plant which are evergreen are often the only vegetation dotting the sandy soil.
Hudsonia ericoides, com monly known as Poverty weed, Beach-heather, Gold-heather, and Cloth-of-Gold are more likely to be found on the Georgia coast than its near relative Hudsonia tomentosa. The species native to our shore grows about 7 inches tall and its leaves are much greener than other Hudsonia plants.
Although many people will never have the opportunity to enjoy this plant around their home, it can be appreciated by coastal residents and seashorebound vacationeers.
Judy Black of Dallas, reminds us that it is apple season in Georgia and all Georgian's are urged to enjoy fresh apples that arc available in quantity throughout the state.

"Interpretations and recommendations were made at the laboratory and sent to the county agent for forwarding to the farmer or grower," Jones said. "The majority of the plant tissues submitted consisted of pecan, corn, cotton, soybean and pasture crops."
During the year, procedures were established to provide analyses of feeds, forages and water.
The soil testing and plant analysis laboratory is primarily for Georgia farmers but the facility can be helpful to growers in other areas also, such as golf courses, urban homeowners and small greenhouse industries.
"Growers who have followed plant and soil test recommendations have improved their yields and the quality of their crops significantly," Jones said.
The occurrence and extent of magnesium deficiency in corn, cotton and pecans in Georgia have been emphasized from the summary of plant analysis results during the past two years.
Half of the deficiencies observed in corn were magnesium deficiencies. Visual symptoms in young corn can be quite similar.
By combining the efforts of the university scientists with those of agricultural producers, the Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory is at work daily to put new life into the plowed furrows of Georgia's valuable farmland.

BOTTLES GOING
After nearly 100 years of service, the glass milk bottle is last ap-
proaching retirement. In 1969 about 80 percent of fluid milk was sold in paper containers, compared with 65 percent in the early 1960"s. Always important on wholesale routes, paper recently overtook glass containers as the most
popular on home-delivery routes, too.
