Georgia Takes Tobacco Markets

Have You Thanked A Plant Today?

It seems the nation has gone wild over bumper stickers. Cars, trucks, tractors and even tricycles carry stickers telling the world how the owner feels about every subject imaginable.
Many of these and their meaning escape me. But I saw an interesting one recently that set me to thinking about our bountiful earth and the beauty therein. It read, "HAVE YOU THANKED A TREE TODAY?"
Well, indeed, we do need to thank
our trees, plants and flowers for their beauty as well as the many services they perform. An Alamo, Georgia, friend of mine recently sent me an article by a Dr. DeWerth of Texas extolling the virtues of plants as pollution fighters. We often forget how much of our lives and well-being we owe to plants. Trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and lawn grasses help to conserve the soil, clear the water and purify the air. A living plant is the first to notify us of poisoned air, and at the same time fights the poisoning by utilizing carbon dioxide and returning it to the air as pure oxygen. Biologists warn that population growth is causing a diminishing of green on land each year and with the possibility of toxic materials reducing the photosynthesis in the sea, we might actually run out of oxygen. However, an average acre of young healthy trees generate 12 tons of oxygen per year thereby producing enough oxygen to meet the requirements of about 18 people. Without greenery, air pollution could not be controlled. Particles of grit, dust and cinders are also collected by our green earth, and returned to the soil during rain and irrigation. Another type of pollution which has only recently received much attention is noise pollution. Plants and trees are better noise abatements than acoustical tile. They absorb noise just as water is absorbed by the earth. In cities and industrial areas where trees, and plants exist the noise is much less grating and therefore creates a more livable situation. In order to properly feed and clothe the ever growing population of the worFd, it appears that some pollution of our air and water is going to be necessary for a good while. So until a better way is found, thank a tree or a plant today. Or better still, plant one!
VALUABLE PECANS
The most important horticultural crop in Georgia? It's pecans. Income from the crop exceeds $10 million annually. However, only a fraction of the potential production is harvested.

Horse Population
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has extended his quarantine on the importation of Texas horses to include horses originating in all states adjoining Texas as well as all other states west of the Mississippi River.
Under the quarantine horses from these states may not be brought into Georgia.
The quarantine extension followed similar action taken by the Commissioner July 14 when he placed an embargo on the importation of horses from Texas as a result of an outbreak of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis in that state.
Equine Encephalitis is a highly contagious disease which is transmissable to humans. It is spread by the bite of mosquitoes carrying the virus.
The outbreak has resulted in the death of hundreds of horses in Texas and Mexico as well as human deaths in the infected areas.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture has quarantined all states surrounding Texas and declared this disease as an emergency disease situation.
The U.S.D.A. is presently putting intensive vaccination and spraying programs in the affected and surrounding areas for control of the carriers.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture urges Georgia horse owners to keep their horses as free of flies and mosquitoes as possible and to avoid mixing and co-mingling their horses with others. These measures are being urged to protect Georgia's growing horse industry.

Georgia tobacco markets will begin the 1971 sales season on August 3rd in south Georgia with an anticipated high quality crop of flue cured tobacco being offered for sale.

Due to a cut in selling time this year on Georgia markets by the 36 Man Industry-Wide Flue Cured Tobacco Committee, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, in an effort to live within these guidelines, has enacted a regulation offering sales opportunity to each warehouse on the same basis that the Industrywide Committee allocated sales opportunity to the Georgia-Florida flue cured belt.

Tobacco Growing in So. Georgia
Farm Land Values
Taking an average acre of farmland that has been cultivated for a couple of generations and tracking what has happened to its value lead to some interesting results.
Starting in 1850, an acre of farmland was worth $11 (U. S. average). By the turn of the century, $20. In 1950, $65. And last November it was worth $195. Values, of course, vary markedly from state to state.
Agricultural economists believe the 1970's will doubtless brin g more of the same. But there are signs the rate of growth in land values is starting to slacken in parts of the country.

HEARING HELD
A hearing was held this week in the Department of Agriculture building concerning this regulation with several warehousemen attending and met with no opposition.
The regulation which gives each warehouseman opportunity for sales of out-of-belt tobacco at 60% of his past five years average sales history, was enacted in order to give Georgia tobacco growers an opportunity to market their tobacco in an orderly manner.
SALES SCHEDULE
Another noticeable change in this year's marketing period will be the Tuesday opening rather than a traditional Wednesday or Thursday opening. This early week opening was set in order to have markets closed on Friday to figure carryover and make adjustments in the amount of carryover to be allowed in each marketing area.
During the first week of sales, the 23 markets (will be operating Tuesday and Wednesday for five hours and

Storing Fruits, Vegetables

How do you tell the difference between male and female catalpa worms?
Mrs. J.M.H., Stone Mountain
We're sorry. We can't tell. However, they multiply rapidly once placed on the tree.
***
What can I do to make my voluntary pecan tree bear?
V.C., Gray
The pecan man, "Nutty" to us, says it takes several years for seedlings to bear. They should be well fertilized. We mailed you a pamphlet to read that should be helpful.
*** Are the bunchy little Bouquet peppers of mixed colors to be eaten or made into pepper sauce?
Mrs. J.W., Cartersville
They can be used in pepper sauce or eaten. They are usually very pungent or hot.

Without Refrigeration

You can store vegetables and fruits without refrigeration in basements,

cellars, outbuildings, and pits, but cool outdoor air is needed to cool the stored products. The kind of storage facility that you will need depends upon the climate in your area.

Vegetables and fruits that are to be stored should be handled carefully to prevent damage. Use containers with smooth inner surfaces for storing. Remove all crushed, cut, or decaying vegetables and fruits from those that are to be stored.
To store vegetables successfully you must provide each vegetable with the temperature, humidity, and. ventilation needed to control moisture loss, maintain flavor, and hold decay to a minimum.
Onions must be mature and thoroughly dry to keep well in storage. They should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place, such as an

store in cellars. Slight freezing will not harm onions, if they are not handled while frozen.
Pumpkins and squashes should be harvested before frost leaving a piece of stem on when cutting from plants. These keep better if they are cured for 10 days at 80 degrees to 85 degrees F. If these temperatures are impracticable, put the vegetables near your furnace.
After curing, store in a dry place at 55 degrees to 60 degrees F. If stored at 50 degrees or below, pumpkins and squashes are subject to damage by chilling. At temperatures above 60 degrees they gradually lose moisture and become stringy.

attic or unheated room. Keep them in well ventilated containers such as slatted crates or open-mesh bags.
Fill bags half full and hang them on overhead hooks. Fill crates half full and stack on crossbars. Do not

Potatoes that are to be stored require special handling at harvestime. They should be removed promptly from the garden to prevent sun and wind damage. Cure early

A few years ago, I wrote the MARKET BULLETIN trying to find out if someone knew the recipe for homemade yeast cakes. Nearly everyone sent us the recipe for sourdough starter, batter, etc.

Pecan Meetings

The Agricultural Commodity Commission for pecans has proposed marketing order number 9 for pecans. This is to organize a commodity commission for the purposes of research, education, and promotion of pecans. These meetings will be held to explain the organizational workings and needs of a commodity commission for pecans, thus giving all interested parties an opportunity to get all desired in formation.

July 29 - 9:30 AM - Peanut Harvesting & Curing Short Course, Rural Development Center, ABAC, Tifton.

August 14 - 9 AM - Central Ga. Cattlemen's Assn. Field Day, Gene Thaxton's place, Roberta.

A delectable and vitaminteeming relative of domestic varieties, wild lettuce or hor-
seweed, L. canadensis, grows abundantly in Georgia. This plant is common in the rich, moist soils of fields, yards, roadsides, and open thickets.
Wild lettuce sometimes grows as high as a man. The generally smooth stalks have a whitish cast to them, as do the underneaths of the clasping stem leaves, which
are abundant up to the loosely branched flower clusters. The
deeply indented leaves growing
from the base of the stalk become from several to twelve inches long. The numerous little narrow flowers range in color from
bronze to yellow and blue.
If you like the slightly bitter taste of cooked dandelions, then wild lettuce is for you. Otherwise,
discard the first water in which this potherb is boiled. The leaves
and stems are tender enough to cook until the plant is about sixteen inches high.
When just a few inches tall,
wild lettuce makes a tasty salad. Unfortunately, wild lettuce stays
in this eminently edible condition only a week or so.
When the tall seedstalk is
broken or cut, a thick white milky juice exudes, which soon coagulates and stiffens into a rubber-like consistency. It is the
gum that has medicinal properties.
Tobacco Markets
(Continued from page 1) Thursday for four hours.
Markets will be open for three and a half hours Monday through Thursday during the second, third and fourth weeks of sales. There will be 37 sets of buyers on the flue cured markets during these first four weeks.
The fifth week of sales there will be nine sets of buyers with markets remaining open in Alma, Adel, Douglas, Moultrie, Quitman, Claxton, Fitzgerald, Statesboro, and one in Live Oak, Florida. The markets to remain open were determined by the Georgia-Florida Tobacco Warehouse Association last year when a rotation system was put into effect for the next four years.
During the sixth week of sales, there will be four sets of buyers on the flue cured belt. The markets open during that time will be determined by the warehouse association.
Commissioner Irvin, distressed over the Industry-Wide Committee's decision to cut the selling time in Georgia, urged all Georgia growers to contact their warehouseman and alert him of the importance of selling Georgia tobacco first.

My phlox have a white powdery looking substance on the leaves and the top leaves are crinkled and stuck together. What is this and what to do?
Mrs. R.H., Dalton

Two things bug phlox. If it is on the stem, it is cottony leaf hopper. Cygon spray will control this. If it is on the leaves, it is powdery mildew. Spray with Phaltan or Acti-dione, available at your feed and seed store or garden center.
***
How do you grow water chestnuts?
R.J., Newnan

They are grown like water lillies. We mailed you some recipes using these.
***
If I use a hypodermic needle to draw out some goody and insert strychnine in an egg, will it kill snakes if eaten?
B.L., Cochran
Yes it will, says our Vet division. However, it will kill anything else that eats the egg. Clear up any underbrush or growth around your problem area as snakes don't like clear places.
***
My dog has red mange and I need a cure. Do you have a good one?
Mrs. P.C., Thomaston

Please take your dog to a

veterinarian. There are several types

of mange and only a vet can identify

which one and advise the correct

cure.

Storing Vegetables

potatoes by holding them in moist air for 1 to 2 weeks at 60 degrees to 75 degrees. This heals skinned areas and small cracks thus preventing decay. A storage temperature of 60 degrees is ideal for keeping early potatoes 4 to 6 weeks.
After harvesting, cure late potatoes by holding them in moist air for 1 to 2 weeks at 60 degrees to 75 degrees. For winter storage, store at about 35 degrees to 40 degrees after curing.
Only fruits that mature late in fall or that can be purchased on the market during the winter can be considered for home storage. Most fruits can be stored best at 31 degrees F.
Apples keep best in cellars that can be cooled by frosty night air in fall and can be maintained at low temperature (about 31 degrees F) until early spring. They should be stored in insulated boxes in outbuildings, in hay in a barn, in straw-lined pits, or in soil-and straw-covered barrels. Pick the apples when they are mature but still hard.
