Homemakers Put
Living In Life
LIVING! That's what it's all about. And for homemakers - especially homemakers -- it's 24 hours a day. Truly, a woman's work is never done. Just about every minute of every day it's decision, decision, decision!
What to buy? How to get the most for our money? How to take care of the kids? How to do everything I have
to do when there isn't enough time?
Despite the myriad questions and complexities of our 20th century world, thousands of Georgia homemakers are calmly going about their task of building better homes and stronger families -- and thus a better world! Helping homemakers "put more living in life" has been the calling of Extension home economics work since the turn of the century. It all started in the early 1900s with what was called "Tomato Canning Clubs." Some ten years later the first home demonstration agent was appointed, and the organization followed suit and became known as "Home Demonstration Club."
(Our guest columnist this week is Mrs. Martha Jones, State Home Economics Leader, Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia, Athens, 30601.)
A few years ago our home demonstration agents became county Extension home economists, and in 1970 the organization's name was changed to reflect the new title. So it's "Extension Homemakers Club" now.
Members like this. They feel this is what they really are -- homemakers - and the new name reflects the business they are about. Too, the Extension Homemakers theme or title is used throughout -- from local community club to County Council, and on to District, State and National Councils.
But whatever the name, Extension home economics programs have been the means whereby homemakers have kept up-to-date on latest information, technology and know-how for better family living.
Some 20,000 current members of Extension Homemaker Clubs and Councils in Georgia are busy now telling other homemakers how they can "put more living in life by joining up." The goal is 50,000 members by 1975, which will be the 50th anniversary of the State Extension Homemakers Council.
Membership in a community club or County Council brings a monthly home economics newsletter with latest homemaking tips and "happenings" in the county; an opportunity to enroll in a wide choice of home economics study groups;

Horse Edition Early Tomato Plants Coming July 14 Escape Bacterial Wilt
The quarterly Horse Show and Sale Edition of the BULLETIN will be published July 14. Deadline for notices to appear in this issue is July 7.
For best results, notices should be listed separately and should include the following items in this order: (1) date, (2) time, (3) name of event, (4) very brief description of activities, (5) sanctioning organization or association, if desired, (6) location, (7) name, phone and address of person who can give additional information.
The later the dates for harvesting and transplanting, the higher the incidence of bacterial wilt disease in tomato plants grown in the South and transplanted to
northern producing areas.
Southern bacterial wilt is one of the most destructive diseases of tomato plants grown in the Southern States. And despite use of the best sanitary procedures currently available, there is disease spread and loss in northern fields after shipping and transplanting.
To help reduce the loss, studies were conducted by ARS plant pathologist Thomas H. Barksdale, Beltsville, Md., ARS soil scientist

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
A study which started at Georgia State University this past spring has uncovered some very interesting features about Georgia folklore.
I have, however, found that there is very little written about campmeetings and that they have flourished as a folk tradition in our state more than in any other state. Since there are so few records, I am requesting anyone who might have any old records or who knows where any such records exist to get in touch with me.
I hope to find out where, exactly, the old sites might be found and any interesting information about actually going to campmeetings that any of your readers, both young and old, might be willing to share with me.
I am interested also in finding out about campmeetings that are still in existence and the names of some of the Trustees that I might contact for an interview.

What 9i
Sorghum is a genus of grasses with a large number of species, cultivated throughout the world for food, forage, and syrup. They are tall, annual or perennial, quick-growing grasses with broad leaves and usually a very large terminal cluster, the fruits of some which have been important food plants for centuries. Being stout and corn-like, they are of a more commercial than horticultural use.
Sorghums were among the first of the wild plants to be domesticated by man originating in Africa and Asia. Their cultivation in Egypt can be dated before 2200 B.C. and they were also grown in China and India at an early date.
There are four main types of sorghums: grass, grain, broomcorn, and sugar. Broomcorn grown for the bristle-like branches known as the "brush" are used for carpet and whisk brooms. This variety has been growing in the United States since 1797.
Grass sorghums are used entirely for hay and pasturage. These include Durra, Milo, Shallu, Kaoliang, Feterita and Hegari. The grain or seed is used for livestock food and the plant for foilage. The grain sorghums are used as a staple human food in Asia, India, and Africa.
Those grown for the sweet juice are often generally called sugar sorghums or sorgho. The sweet juice can be boiled down into a syrup which is often used as a molasses substitute and is often even called molasses. In sorghum, the syrup is not crystallized into sugar, but used in pure concentrated form.
Tyron Spearman, Public Relations Director, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton, presents Tim Leard, a 12th grade student at Franklin County High School, Lavonia, the first place award at the tenth Natural Resources Conservation Workshop held at ABAC. Sam Dunaway, Workshop Director, holds one of the prizes won by Tim. The award is presented to the student making the highest score for all phases of conservation study at the workshop.

Could you tell me how to go about registering a cattle brand here in Georgia?
G.W.E., Sparta
We have mailed you an application and information on the procedure
which must be taken.
***
Could you please identify this flower? It grows on a vine. Mrs. D. H., Hephzibah
Our Plant and Entomology division identified it as Clematis, variety ramona. It is a type of vine which likes "its feet in the shade and its head in the sun."

I am tired of wrestling with pastes trying to polish my silver. I want the name of a company manufacturing a liquid polish or material to mix with water to dip silver in. Any advice?
Mrs. D.A.C., Adairsville
Our Home Economist advises that the dip method of cleaning silver is not
recommended as it sometimes ruins the finish due to the strong corrosive acid
used. We have mailed you instructions for cleaning and storing silver which
should help with the problem.

Please identify this weird bug or creature (enclosed - preserved). I've only seen one which came out of the shrubbery. Can you also identify the
fungus or disease on the azalea I enclosed. Mrs. M.L., Stone Mountain
The bug looked pickled and was a mole cricket that feeds on seedlings. It is common in south Georgia but not in north Georgia. The azalea has leaf gall. Burn the infected leaves as they are the source of infection for next year. Spray next year during bloom with Manza*te*. *
I am interested in getting the name of the earthworm that is best for my yard and small garden. I have been told by bait sellers to get red wrigglers, night crawlers, and Florida earth worms. But all of these disappear when placed in the garden and consequently are not suitable. What now?
T.W.E., Savannah
Our Entomology division advised that night crawlers are probably the best type for you. They do not leave the garden but are probably hidden in the soil.
Homemakers
(Continued from page 1)
participation in District, State and National Council programs, as well as community and county activities; and access to free information and publications on every phase of home economics.
All of this is made available through the county Extension home economist, who is a representative of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service at the local level. She not only can draw on resources of the University, but also on the U. S. Department of Agriculture and other public agencies and institutions.
A homemaker doesn't have to belong to a Club or County Council to receive information from the Extension home economist. Everybody in the county is "her audience," and when a homemaking problem or question arises, a visit or call will bring up-to-date unbiased answers. The few times the home economist doesn't know the answer, she knows someone or some group who does.
So the home economist doesn't "do it all." In addition to providing home economics information, she works at developing leadership in Extension Homemaker Clubs and Councils. Members are responsible for organizational structure. And they make decisions on educational programs based on their own needs.
Some of the study programs now under way across the state are: clothing, cultural arts, foods and nutrition, food preservation, health, interior design, human development, safety, landscaping and horticulture.
Any homemaker is eligible to join a Homemakers Club or Council. Applications for membership are available from the county Extension home economist. She most often is located in the courthouse, post office or county office building in the county seat town. To find her phone number, look under county government for Cooperative or Agricultural Extension Service, or County Agent's Office.
Know?
Georgia ranks second only to California in production of commercial eggs. And Jerry Cox, poultry marketing specialist with the Extension Service, says Georgians produce quality eggs. They gather eggs four times daily - especially during warm weather - wash them immediately, and store them in an egg cooler room where the temperature is between 45 and 55 degrees.

Planning to eat out a lot? It's going to cost you more to do it. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, costs of food at snack bars and school or office cafeterias are going up faster than prices at grocery stores. USDA economists say away-from-home eating costs may average five to six percent higher this year than in 1970.
