The Ga. Senate's
Ag Committee
The 1971 Session of the Georgia Legislature kept the Senate Agriculture Committee busy from beginning to end. For it is this committee's job to study and recommend or not recommend legislation concerning all phases of Georgia's vast agri-business complex and this often includes, as with the '71 session, consumer legislation as well.
Although much of the legislation concerning the farmer, agri-business man and the consumer originates in
the House, (see last week's BULLETIN for break down of all 1971 farmerconsumer legislation) the Senate Agriculture Committee must still study, amend if
necessary and then charge the Senate body with a "do" or "do not" pass recommendation. In addition, of course, there are many bills and resolutions introduced by Senate members which require the attention of the committee.
Having been engaged in agricultural endeavors all my life and having served in the Senate and on the

Senate Agriculture Committee for five terms, I am acutely aware of the changing scene in Georgia as effects rural and urban life and the farmer, agri-business, consumer relationship.
The people of Georgia need to be aware that although this scene is changing, Georgia's most important product is agri-business and that more than 50% of the state's income is derived from agriculture.
The work of the Senate Agriculture Committee does not end when the session of the General Assembly ends. Its members are constantly working to serve the agribusiness complex by talking to and working with all parties, organizations and institutions in the state who are active in and contribute to the agri-business complex.
This committee is presently working towards the expansion and building of better dairy science facilities at the University of Georgia.
Agriculture is and will continue to be big business in Georgia. It is our job to help protect and expand this industry to better meet its needs and those of all the people of Georgia.
RAPID COOLING
Rapid cooling of meat and meat combination dishes help prevent bacterial growth, according to Extension home economists.
They also point out that cooked meats keep best if kept in large pieces until ready for use.

Serum Requirement For Barn Sale

On Feeder, Breeder Swine Lifted

On April 1, 1971, the requirement that feeder or breeder swine be serum

treated at special feeder or breeder sales will be discontinued on those swine

purchased by Georgia farmers. Feeder or breeder swine purchased for shipment

out of state at special feeder or breeder sales will be required to meet the state of

destination's requirements.

Most states still require that

importation.

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin accepts a package of sweet potatoes from 1971's Sweet Potato Princess Betty Rigdon, Tifton.
Betty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rigdon, also presented packages of sweet potatoes to the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Governor.
The Agricultural Commodity Commission for Sweet Potatoes has recipe booklets available of the winners of this year's contest at Room 324, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, S.W., Atlanta, 30334.

County ASCS offices have been instructed that farmers would be eligible for prevented planting credit in 1971 if they were unable to obtain sufficient N-Cytoplasm or acceptable blend corn seed to plant at least 45 percent of the feed grain base.
The Cooperative Extension Service does not recommend the planting of any of the blends because all blends which contain T-Cytoplasm are susceptible to corn blight.
County ASC committees are being notified to take into consideration the recommendations of the Cooperative Extension Service when approving requests for prevented planting credit for 1971.

feeder and breeder swine purchased at sales to remain in Georgia will save Georgia's swine industry an estimated $350,000 annually.
Georgia feeder and breeder buyers are reminded that whenever they wish to import feeder or breeder swine from other states, a permit for this importation must be obtained from the State Veterinarian's office.
The swine must be individually identified and serum treated within five days prior to importation. If breeding swine are over six months of age, they must be negative to a Brucellosis test within 30 days of importation or originate from a Brucellosis validated herd.
Imported swine are automatically under quarantine for 30

days and should be isolated from the

Love apples are known by the botanical name, solanum aculeatissimum. The plant is from one to three feet high and is one and one-half inches in diameter. It is a prickly fruit resembling a tomato.

the same way.

Are wild onions edible? B.L., Cochran
Yes sir. However, you may find th*e*m* a little strong. Does planting vegetables and shrubbery near a septic tank harm the drainage system? The vegetables?
K.B., Jonesboro
It will not harm the vegetables nor the shrubbery. However, the roots from the shrubbery may upset the drainage system later.
*** I need a recipe for making butter from goat's milk as my child is allergic to cow's milk.
L.W., Albany
Butter from goat's milk is difficult to make as the fat globules are so small. Add one cup of regular buttermilk to one gallon of goat's milk as a culture. Let stand 12 hours at room temperature and churn as usual.
*** I have some young fruit trees growing in an area now being taken over by Bermuda grass. Can I spray the grass to kill it without hurting the trees?
A.T., Fiarmount
Our Plant people advise spraying during the growing season lightly and according to directions with Dalapon. Heavy spraying will harm the fruit trees. Instructions for use are on the can.

Attend National Meet
Five Georgia 4-H members have earned the highest delegate recognition it's possible to receive through the youth organization.
Chosen to represent the state at the 1971 National 4-H Conference April 18-23 in Washington, B.C., are:
Ellen Pinckney, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R. H. Pinckney, Jackson; Diann Bass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Buck Bass, Cochran; Tommy Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Peterson, Broxton; Curt Knighton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer H. Knighton, Bluffton, and David Quarles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Quarles, Ball Ground.
Their selection was announced by Tommy L. Walton, state 4-H leader with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
The five were chosen on a basis of their overall leadership abilities and
accomplishments and potential for further growth and development.

We would like to know if you or any of your readers have a solution to our problem. We have planted watermelon, cucumber and squash seed and the coons dig them out of the ground within 24 hours after they are planted. We also had this problem last year with our corn planting.

The lilies with their graceful forms, exquisite perfume, and outstanding coloring have always been looked upon as the noblest of garden plants. They are con sidered "old fashioned" plants which have come newly into vogue.
The genus Lilium is the type of the order Liliaeae which has over 2,000 well known species. Lilium is a large genus made up of showy, bulbous herbs-the true lilies.
Lilies are erect, perennial, leafy-stemmed herbs. The leaves are scattered or in whorls without marginal teeth. The flowers are very showy with petals and sepals often colored alike and scarcely distinguishable as such.
In addition to their beauty, lilies have a long and interesting history in Europe and in Asia. The Madonna lily was depicted in decorations on pottery and mosaics and was the symbol representing the Annunciation to the Virgin in Renaissance pain tings of Europe.
One of the most important species in the United States is the Lilium longiflorum which was introduced from Bermuda in 1875 by a tourist from Philadelphia. This species is more commonly known as the Easter lily.
The Easter lily is a whitetrumpet lily not over three feet high. The flowers are less horizontal, fragrant, pure, white, trumpet-shaped and nearly seven inches long.
It has a power to stand high temperature allowing it to be forced into bloom. It also produces a large number of flowers from each bulb, and the flowers are quite large.
Easter lilies are used as cut flowers, for funerals, and prin cipally for Easter.

Should Georgia be able to continue until April 8, 1971, without additional cases of hog cholera, it will be declared a hog cholera free state.
The swine industry of Georgia,, practicing veterinarians, extension service personnel, and others associated therewith are to be commended for their cooperation with this very important program in eliminating hog cholera from the swine population in the state of Georgia.
Your continued support and cooperation is needed to see that hog cholera virus is not re-introduced into our swine population.
The importation of hog cholera carrier swine and the feeding of improperly cooked garbage are the two most likely ways that hog cholera can be introduced into Georgia. We urge that every precaution be taken to prevent this from happening.
