Georgia Mountain
Apple Growers
The Georgia Mountain Apple Growers Association was formed by apple growers in Gilmer and Fannin County in 1957 for the purpose of packing and marketing their apples more economically. The association began with 15 members and has increased over the years until there are now 31 members.
In 1957 the quality of apples was so poor due to the lack of proper chemicals and misapplication by the growers, forty percent of the apples
i were unfit to pack and only 7,580 bushel were of marketing [ quality.
The following iyears the growers used 'better chemicals I and management iiand improved the quality so much that at the present time it is not uncommon for them to pack 85 to 90% of their fruit which is known world wide for its high quality.
In 1970 the association packed 45,286 bushel of apples of the Detroit, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Red Rome and Yate varieties. Many of

these apples came from orchards of new young growers who wish to remain in North Georgia and make their living as commercial apple growers.
There is such a small margin of profit in apple growing that the latest methods of production and packaging must be used. Our association is a thoroughly up to date operation. The apples are harvested in 20 bushel containers which are handled by fork lifts.
After being brought to the packing house, they start the packing process by being immersed in a hydro-dump. They then go to the hydro-washer where they are washed, rinsed and dried. Sta-fresh wax is then applied and dried. The apples are sorted according to grade. Each apple is sized oy weight and then packed in trays or put in'3 or 4 pound polyethylene bags. They are packed in boxes labeled with the beautiful Georgia Mountain Apple brand.
The growers feel that marketing is as important as growing. The past seven years they have employed professional selling agents and are very well pleased.
State and federal inspection service has been instrumental in helping the growers to grow quality apples and to maintain a high grade in packing them. ________

Call them wieners. . .frankfurters. . .hotdogs. . .or whatever you like they're still as symbolic of America as baseball or the Statue of Liberty.
This great American meat product is consumed in the billions by young and old alike, in fancy buffet dishes or wrapped in a bun for a quick snack.

SUPER TREE SEEDLINGS
The Georgia Forestry Commission has announced that improved, "super", tree seedlings from certified seed are being made available to Georgia landowners for the first time this year.
With approximately 18 million tree seedlings for sale, seedling orders are being accepted on a first come, first served basis. Initial shipping of seedlings is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 23.

Yet, as popular as they are, frankfurters are known by many names with seemingly vague descriptions. And, as American as
European ancestry.
Perhaps these two factors lead to most of the confusion in the minds of consumers. Understanding what the label represents, in addition to reading it thoroughly, are the best guides to your best buys.
In reality, frankfurters are one of more than 200 varieties of the common sausage, and account for about 25 percent of all sausage sold in the United States.
German sausage makers (wurstmachers) disagree among themselves about whether this favorite Americanized-sausage is a

cents per thousand trees must be added to given costs if trees are delivered by state truck to county ranger headquarters. Payment must accompany all orders before shipment can be made. No refunds will be made on orders cancelled after February 1, 1971.
All orders must be submitted on a Forestry Commission application form, available from the Forestry Commission County rangers, county agents, soil conservation service technicians, and agricultural conservation program officers.
Information to help Georgia agribusinessmen make decisions for immediate and long-range planning will be offered here November 23-24 during the second state agribusiness conference.
"Critical Issues Facing Agribusiness" is the conference theme. Some of those issues include: environmental management, monetary policy, the changing image of agriculture, agribusiness centers, locating new plants, new products, textured foods and labor.
As the story goes, Antoine introduced his "red hots" to the citizens of St. Louis in 1883, and provided each customer with a white glove to hold the hot sausage. But, customers failed to return the white glove. His wife hit on the idea to wrap the sizzling sausages in a bun - with instant success.
Some say the final shape of the frankfurter was the brain-child of an unknown butcher who was inspired by his dachshund. Most agree that it was christened a "hotdog" by a New York sports cartoonist in 1900 with a car-

Our Plant and Entomology division advised that date trees have female and male trees and require hand pollination. difference is the size of the sausage. Regardless, frankfurters,

Meat inspection officials make no distinction between the respective terms.

Dear Editor:
I would like to know the legend of the good luck Buckeye. I would appreciate it if anyone who knows the origin of this legend, etc., would please notify me.
Mrs. C. Richard Bush Route 2, Box 325 Palatka, Florida 32077
Dear Editor:
Will you please describe and print a picture of the Crotalaria plant in the MARKET BULLETIN. I saw a piece in the BULLETIN a few weeks ago about it and warning folks to be careful about feeding it to livestock, and making sure the fields
are free of it. But how can we keep it away from livestock
and out of hay and corn if we don't know what it looks like?
I've lived and worked on a farm all my life and never heard of that plant until a few weeks ago.
Mrs. F.L. Hamby Route 3, Box 251 Gumming, Georgia 30130
(Editor's note: Crotalaria is an annual plant 3 to 6 feet or more tall, with an erect somewhat ribbed stem, having several stout ascending branches. The laternate leaves are short-stalked and simple. Leaves are dark green, blunt but often tipped with a bristle. The yellow flowers are peashaped and face upwards. The smooth pods, nearly 2 inches long, are light green becoming nearly black when ripe. The seeds, nearly l/ 4 inch long, are black and glossy. The whole plant is smooth to the touch and waxy so that water stands in drops on the leaves.)

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, November 18, 1970
Wlutt U
Now that summer is gone and house plants are one of our only sources of color and living plant materials, the dieffenbachis will catch and hold attention in any room setting which allows them space to spread out their decorative foliage.
They are one of the most handsome of American foliage plants and being of the Araceae Family are closely related to many other plants we are familiar with; caladium, skunk-cabbage, sweet flag -- and even the Calla lily. The one thing they all have in common is a bitter, often poisonous juice, sometimes milky.
There are almost twenty varieties of this plant, most having dark green foliage with creamy white or pale chartreuse markings or variegations. They grow best in well drained soil rich in organic matter; half garden loam, half peat.
Although they will stay alive and grow slowly in dim locations, they need some filtered light if they are to prosper. They can be propagated from cut sections of the partially dormant stems which should be half buried lengthwise in moist sand. The rooted stem cuttings can then be potted.
The botanical name of the plant honors the German physician and botanist, Dr. J. F. Dieffenbach; however the common name of the plant is Dumb Cane -- so called because it you chew it you will temporarily lose the power of speech. Under no circumstances should any portion of the plant be placed in the mouth.
It is advertised regularly in our BULLETIN.
Consumers Guide To Leather Terms
Leather is the traditional shoe material. Good leather is soft, pliable, firm and fine-grained. In contrast, poor leather is coarse-grained and flabby, stretcher readily and may be stiff. Numerous types of leather are used in the shoe-making process. Understanding leather terminology is important to all consumers.
Top Grain leather is the upper part of hair side of the hide. This is the most desirable leather and doesn't scuff easily.
Split leather is the under part of the hide which has been split off. It is less durable and scuffs easier than does top grain.
Buckskin comes from deer or elk. Porous, cool, fine textured and napped surfaces are its properties. Scarce and expensive, it is often imitated in calfskin or kid.
Calfskin is a pliable, fine, smooth leather that is not easily scuffed or marred. As the name implies, it comes from young cattle.
Cordovan leather comes from the
rump of horse hide. Smooth and nonporous, it takes a brilliant polish.
Kid is an excellent upper leather .made from full-grown goats. While fine and close knit, it is still resilient and porous.
In pigskin leather the pores go all the way through making it cool and comfortable. Washable finishes can be applied.
Suede calf or kid is buffed on the flesh side to produce a velvety surface. Fine smooth nap and rich uniform color indicate the best quality.
Patent leather is calf, horse, colt, or kidskin that has been varnished and enameled. This finish is nearly a"giritvigeh".t and watertight with little
Reptile has natural markings. It is very durable, won't crack or scuff easily, nor will it shrink or stretch to a great degree.
Modern technology has produced many manmade materials suitable for shoes.

I would like information on how to get a patent for a fertilizer that is not yet on the market. I have an idea for a type of fertilizer that I feel will far exceed all fertilizers now on the market.
H.G.S., Woodstock
You should contact the U. S. Government Patent Office, Washington, D.C.,
for information on patents. A patent lasts for seven years after which time it
may be renewed. May we suggest that after you perfect your fertilizer, you
might be interested in selling your formula to one of the major fertilizer
companies.

Enclosed is a label with Reg. Penn. Dept. Agr. on the bottom. This appears on every package of cookies, cakes, and doughnuts we buy of this brand. If the
Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture derives any funds from this, why don't other states get on the bandwagon also.
E.N., Wildwood
Hate to disappoint you, but Pennsylvania doesn't get any profit from this. This product is required by Pennsylvania law to be registered with their Department of Agriculture and to show it on the label. This is done to let the people know that food products are inspected by the Department of Agriculture. The Georgia Dept. of Agriculture also inspects all food products such as this but this is not one that is required to list it on the label. Georgia doesn't get any profit for this either*. * *
There is a big chicken and egg farm in the residential part of town I live in. The odor is unbearable. What can be done to have the chickens moved?
C., Sylvester
Well, quite a bit if we had more to go on than your initial C. But, as you put your return address on the envelope, we referred your letter to our Field Inspection Forces in the hopes they can locate you. All requests and complaints such as this are handled confidentially. We regret that we are unable to answer any requests that are unsigned, have only initials and no address, or signed with a fictitious name such as Smokey Bear, as someone did.

Recently I asked you about the word pure being used on products that have had something added or removed. Truth is, you don't find that word on many items nowadays and not many people read labels anyway. They wouldn't know the difference and the labels don't always tell the whole truth. For many years I bought only pure full strength apple cider vinegar. I don't find it anymore. Now I find vinegar with the words "diluted with water to 4 percent acidity" on the label. How much water am I getting when I buy a gallon of vinegar?

rule or line, Not distance that is marked upon a
wall
A man grows tall in spirit watching corn.
And what the secret of this challenge from his neighbor?
Can it be pride that will not take a second place,
Or envy lest the blade and ear outstrip him?
Does each succeeding thought stretch skyward
As the tassel blooms above the earth? .
Does courage find its pattern as the rows that cleave the hill?
Here faith becomes a standard waving free beneath the sun
Our foods division advised that when vinegar is pure, it is not necessary to indicate the acidity percent. Vinegar is diluted to lower the acidity level. However, the acidity level is still high enough for use in making pickles, canning, etc. Dilution varies from 4 to 9 percent with the average being 5.5 percent. The percent the vinegar is diluted is required by law to be on the label. When vinegar is diluted with 4 percent acidity being listed, one gallon contains 35.84 ounces of water. We think you would be surprised at the number of people ' who read labels, they call us regularly.
And hope a sturdy shelter that is toughened by the wind,
And love surmounts the deluge of recurring rain.
Yet these are not the answer Neither one, nor two, nor three; For faith and hope and love but
serve for measures of his growth. No answer has been reckoned since
the first brave stalk upthrust: Enough that man grows tall in spirit
watching corn.

GEORGIA FIRES Georgia's 1969 forest fire figures indicate nearly 9,000 separate fires. Foresters with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service say these figures do not include fires classed as non-forest, such as grass and building fires. The major cause of forest fires was debris burning.
ON ADVERTISING Ah, advertising! Miss Lora Laine, home management specialist with the Cooperative Extension Service, tells consumers that "advertising is an integral part of our daily fare. Without it we would be at a loss in shopping in our complex world." Miss Laine says advertising tells us whc sells what and where. It alst describes or pictures the item anc tells us how much it costs. And fur thermore, it introduces new mer chandise on the market.
