A Better Life
In The 70's
October is Cooperative Commitment Month.
That's what the theme-symbol with this editorial is all about.
It belongs to America's cooperatives. And this month co-op members - including some 600,000 in Georgia - will be committing themselves to ideas and projects that will bring that "Better Life" about.
Like improving the environment by curbing pollution and other
hazards, finding new services and improving existing ones, increasing participation in community affairs, helping bring industry into ryral areas, ThePledge ofAmerica* Cooperatwes and encouraging young farmers to begin taking leadership. This is a time when rural America - indeed the whole nation needs bold new leadership that will speak with determination. Determination to do something about (This week's guest column is supplied by the Georgia Council of Farmer Cooperatives, Inc., O.K. Bowden of Atlanta, president, and James A. Raburn, business management specialist - agricbusiness, Extension Service, Athens, secretary.)
improving the quality of life. Co-ops i have said they will heed the call.
Cooperative comes from "co" together, and "operative" - doing work. In other words, working together.
In Georgia there are 141 cooperatives whose members are dedicated to this idea. Included are 17 marketing co-ops, 14 dealing in production supplies, 15 Federal Land Bank Associations, 21 Production Credit Associations, 41 Electric Membership Corporations, 29 Dairy Herd Improvement Associations and 19 Artificial Breeding Associations.
There are others. Such as cooperative-oriented insurance companies, rural telephone co-ops, credit unions, group health plans and cooperative housing projects.
We wish 'em all well during their special month, and during the months; that follow. We are in this thing together, and one thing sure - if they bring about that "Better Life" everybody's going to share in it.
So the theme-symbol with this editorial - with commitment - can belong to you and me too. If we work together.
Homemaker Festival
On October 17 the Fannin Extension Homemakers Council will sponsor a fall homemakers festival. Items on sale will include homemade foods, art, handicrafts and small antiques. Booths will be located on Highways five and 76 in Blueridge and on Highways 76 and 60 in Morganton.

Wild Black Cherry is dangerous either fresh or wilted due to frost, drought or broken branches. Poisoning has occurred when fence rows were being cleared and when the tops were thrown into the pasture. All

Good for Ga.'s Economy

Our expanded rural housing loan program is a boon to the economy of most areas of Georgia. In a number of counties 100 or more loans will be made by the Agency this year.
FHA loans for new homes average about $12,500. This means that about $1 I/ 4 million will be pumped into such county's business and commerce.
This money will be shared by

contractors, supply dealers, carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians, and other building tradesmen and laborers. It will increase local sales of furniture and appliances. Use of electric current and other utilities will increase.

As this money circulates in a county it is estimated that each dollar benefits at least seven persons and firms.
Farmers Home Administration makes housing loans for construction or purchase of new homes including lots on which to build and for remodeling and repair of existing dwellings.
Loans are made to eligible applicants in the open country and in cities and towns of not more than 5500 population. FHA loans are made only to persons who cannot obtain their credit needs from private credit sources on terms they can meet.
Repayment terms run as long as
33 years. Housing credit makes it possible
for families to remain in rural areas rather than migrate to our large cities. This helps stabilize schools, churches and other institutions and increases trade and business in rural towns and cities.

The Metro foresters in each of these cities are assisting contractors and sub-division developers in the care and preservation of trees during the development of streets and roads, site grading, and construction of homes. Assistance is also available to landowners on reforestation needs, marking trees to be thinned for pulpwood or any other forest management problem.
The shift of population from the farm to the city has brought about many changes. One of the most noticeable to the forester is the increased appreciation for trees. A tree, or a number of trees, on a homesite is of as much value, at least aesthetically to the homeowner than many acres of commercial forest land located in the rural area.
The Metro foresters are working in a new era of forestry; they are working where the people are located and working with the people who own the trees. They are selling modern forestry to a modern society.

We have a new supervisor on my job. She has been working us so hard that some people are fainting. We go to work at 7 and get off at 3 but lately she has been working us overtime without pay. She fired one lady without giving her 2 weeks notice. Is there a government man I can contact about this?
A.A.T., Claxton

Elecampane, horseheal or elf dock, common names of Inula Helenium, came to America as a healer being introduced into gardens for use in home remedies. Being a relative of the lowly daisy it found a congenial climate here and rapidly went native - growing wild all over the United States. It is a handsome plant growing 4-5 feet tall with blossoms appearing in July and August. It has bright yellow flowers that look like a double sunflower but the perennial rootstock is what has made it famous.
The substance most abundantly found in the root of the plant is inulin, a kind of invert starch often recommended as a replacement for ordinary starch in the diets of diabetics; also oils and several crystallizable substances. It got its name of "horseheal" in England where it is still used by veterinarians in treating pulmonary complaints in horses.
Pliny wrote, "Let no day pass without eating some of the roots of elecampane condited (pickled, preserved) to help digestion..."
An English herbalist of the 17th century claimed, "It is good for shortness of breathe and an old cough, and for such as cannot breathe unless they hold their neckes upright." Even the ancient poets such as Horace, in one of his poems, mentions a delicate sauce made of it and says that Romans who had eaten, not wisely but too well, pined for elecampane to relieve their distress.
Hunting Safety
Course Planned

Five sessions will be held, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing through 5 p.m. No advance registration is necessary. A $2 fee will be charged to cover costs of ammunition and targets. Those furnishing their own ammunition will be charged $1 to cover the cost of clay targets.
The site of the course is off 1-75, about 30 miles south of Atlanta, two miles west off the Locust Grove exit.

We suggest that several of you go together to the manager or owner of the

company and report your problem to him. If it is a reputable firm, they should

try to solve problems such as this without having a federal agency interfere.

There is a federal law that regulates companies like yours, the Federal Wage

and Hour Law. However, you will probably obtain faster results if you act

yourself.

I have a problem with my breathing. I don't take in enough oxygen and my tongue turns blue when I eat. This has been going on for four months and my doctor doesn't seem to know what the cause is. I have heard that there are tests to determine how much oxygen a person is taking in. Please tell me where -there is a doctor in my area that could run this test.
E.S., Lyons Judging from your letter, your problem could be serious and you should seek help as soon as possible. The South Eastern Medical Society in Lyons will be able to give you information on doctors in your area. We hope you will visit a
doctor soon and have him take the nec*es*s*ary steps to cure your problem.

I subscribed to FARM JOURNAL in November of 1969 as you can see by my enclosed receipt and have yet to receive the publication. I have written Periodical Sales and Farm Journal and still have not gotten the magazine.
What do I do now? J.D.S., Jesup

We wrote Periodical Sales and also the Business Ethics Division of the

Chamber of Commerce where they're located. If a city does not have a Better

Business Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce has a Business Ethics Division

which keeps tabs on the local businesses. We feel sure this is just a mix-up and

will be cleared up shortly.
