Grain Breeding
A Team Effort
Small grains are used as a dual crop in Georgia as several hundred thousand acres are planted each year for grazing and grain. Our mild, moist winters enable small grains to produce sufficient growth for grazing during the winter months and a grain crop in the late spring.
In order to develop disease resistant, high producing varieties it is important that a vigorous small grain improvement program be carried out by the University of
Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations.
Georgia is fortunate in having three topnotch small grain breeders. Dr. D. D. Morey, Coastal Plain Station, Tifton, is primarily responsible for the improvement of oat, wheat and rye varieties. Dr. M. J. Bitzer, Georgia Station, Experiment, works very closely with Dr. Morey in the development of semi-dwarf wheat. For maximum wheat yields, the farmer has to apply 60 to 90 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Under these high

rates of nitrogen our present day wheat varieties (normal height) tend to lodge prior to harvest.
By planting semi-dwarf wheats (36 to 40 inches) lodging would be negligible under high nitrogen applications. He is also working with the basic problems of hybrid wheat production.
Dr. Morey and Dr. Bitzer are initiating beef cattle feeding studies, comparing soft red wheat with corn. They will be working with Dr. R. S. Lowery and W. C. McCormick in the Animal Science Division. Dr. Bitzer is also investigating the effect of row width and row direction on grain production.
Developing improved varieties of barley is the main thrust of Dr. A. R. Brown's program at the College Station, Athens. He is also interested in semi-dwarf wheat and has several lines which look promising.
Improvement of feed quality of barley by increasing its lysine content is another facet of the barley program at Athens. Dr. Robert Littrell, plant pathologist, Coastal Plain Station in cooperation with A. R. Brown is checking effectiveness of organic mercury and systemic compounds for the control of barley stripe and loose smut.
Georgia small grain breeders maintain contact with each other several times a month via phone and letter. They get together at least three times a year to plan their research.

Corn growers who produced varieties that were resistant to the blight this year are urged to save some of the corn for seed next year in case there is not an adequate supply of resistant seed for next year's planting.
Second generation seed legally cannot be sold in Georgia but it can be saved for personal use on your own farm. However, this seed should be used only if you are unable to secure enough resistant seed for next spring's planting as it generally has about a 20 percent lower yield than 1st generation seed.

Goldthread or mouthroot Coptis groenlandica -- is a decorative little plant that abundantly carpets the northern bogs and extends southward over the mountains. It is a weak, low, perennial herb of the buttercup family, one grown somewhat for interest, and, by some, for its medicinal properties. Its delicate flowers appear in May, but its shining evergreen leaves are noticeable throughout the year. Its name, goldthread, comes from the bright yellow thread-like roots.
This is a small herb, not over 5 inches high, with three-part leaves resembling those of the strawberry. In late spring or early summer the plant bears a white, star-shaped flower about 1 inch across. For more certain identification, pull up the plant and examine the roots. Goldthread has branching, matted, threadlike roots that are a bright golden color. These bright yellow roots are the medicinal part of the herb.
Goldthread roots furnish one of the purest, clearest, cleanesttasting bitters to be found, with no nauseating properties and not a hint of astringency. There is no odor whatever. A closely related species of Coptis is highly regarded as a medicine in India and China. It is used as a bitter tonic to stimulate the appetite and is thought to be especially valuable during convalescence when nourishing food is needed and the appetite is inclined to be dull. It is also used as a mouthwash to cure thrush and all kinds of mouth sores.
Grain Breeding
(Continued from page 1) of the various small fciain varieties are determined in state wide variety tests at the main and branch agricultural experiment stations in Georgia. There is a performance trial of each of the small grains within 80 miles of every grain grower in the state. Farmers and other interested persons are welcome to visit the plots at any time during the growing season.
Small grain forage production (dry matter) throughout the growing season is being measured by Dr. David Cummins and Mr. Warren Marchant at Experiment and Tifton, respectively. The ability of new small grain varieties to produce milk and beef is evaluated by Dr. M. E. McCullough, Experiment and Dr. W. C. McCormick, Tifton.
The economics of various two crop systems involving small grains and peanuts, small grains and soybeans, small grains and grain sorghum etc. is being investigated by members of the Agricultural Economics Division in cooperation with the small grain breeders.

Tennessee Walking Horse
catalog write Mrs. E. E. Watson, RR 2, Fort Gaines. Mr. Woodrow Purdom will make reservations
The popularity of the Tennessee Walking Horse in Georgia is demonstrated by the presence of over seventeen thousand of them on Georgia soil.
The quality of Georgia's Tennessee Walkers has been demonstrated at The National Celebration in Shelbyville, Tennessee - considered by most to be the world's largest Tennessee Walking Horse Show. Since its first show in 1939, Georgia horses have won both Junior and World Championships.
The Plantation Walking Horse, as it was originally known, was a composite breed that resulted from the mingling of bloods of the Thoroughbred, the Standardbred, the Morgan and the American Saddle Horse or Saddlebred.
A great deal of the development
of the breed took place in the well known agricultural region of middle Tennessee.
Because of this, the name was later changed to Tennessee Walking Horse as the fame of the breed spread. This fame was based largely on the comfort of ride and came at a time when plantation owners and overseers spent much time in the
saddle checking their operations. The gaits of the Tennessee
Walker have been described as a kind of one-horse sedan chair. There is motion fore and aft, but almost none under the saddle.
The most famous gait of the Walking Horse is, of course, the running walk. It is a four-cornered gait that produces much churning of legs beneath while above, the rider gives the appearance, and indeed is, gliding smoothly along.________

Please send me a bulletin on preserving apples (sulphur smoked method). W.A.C., Delano, Tenn.
We do not have any bulletins available on this as this method is used primarily by commercial plants. However, we were able to find one sulphur smoking method. Use 1 teaspoon of sulphur to 1 pound of apples. Wrap the sulphur in paper and place in an iron pan in a wooden barrel. Hang the fruit in a basket from a crosspiece. Light the paper which contains the sulphur and cover the barrel. Leave the fruit for about 20 minutes. Hope this helps.
*** Can you feed laying mash to quail through the winter and make them lay? Does it shorten their life or hurt them in any way?
A.O., LaFayette
Game and Fish says yes. It will shorten their life span the same as it does for poultry. Continually check your nest for eggs and take them up as soon as they are laid. This fools the bird into thinking she hasn't laid enough to set. However, Game and Fish does not pro*m*ise you will be deluged with eggs.
