PCA - A Lending
Coop For Farmers
In Georgia agriculture, credit is beginning to play a larger role. Development of new and larger equipment, advanced farming techniques, improved livestock facilities, better breeding stock - all require a large sum of money and most Georgia farmers are meeting these needs through borrowed money.
A. prevalent source of this credit is the local Production Credit Associations. Farmers throughout Georgia are taking advantage of
this lending cooperative to secure the funds that are necessary to continue or expand their present farming operation. Each farmer that takes this action becomes a part of his own lending institution through the purchase of stock in his particular association. This stock gives the member the opportunity to participate in the election of the Board of Directors for his association and through this board the policies of the association are

established. Not only do PCA members have an active part in their association, but they acquire their credit needs at cost and share in the association's earnings through patronage refunds or dividend checks.
FARMERS SERVICE: Production Credit Associations were established to serve the farmer and are continually expanding their services. Today not only can farmers secure needed credit, but PCA offers Crop Insurance and a Computerized Farm Record System. These and other programs have been added recently as the local PCA's strive to be of better service to Georgia agriculture.
Production Credit Associations are changing as agriculture changes. PCA's are searching for new ways to help agriculture in Georgia. They encourage better management practices, offer conscientious advice and work clpsely with all agricultural leaders in cooperative effort to see farming and farm related industries expand in Georgia.
Agriculture is big in our state and PCA realizes that big businesses have problems. Production Credit Associations endeavor to play a part in these solutions.
LOCAL OFFICES: Information regarding PCA and its service to members can be obtained in local offices located throughout Georgia (your county agent can tell you where.)

Hunting Regulations Protect You, Wildlife

Be sure of that target before you pull the trigger - your deer could be a fellow hunter.

Oh! for a day down on the farm When the days are long and the weather warm;
To till the good earth and feel the sod Makes one feel much closer to God.

To see the cowslips at early morn, And hear the wind rustling through the corn:
Away from the City's dust and heat And all the noise of the busy street.

To search for the yellow celandine And the bluest of wild morning glory vines.
What better to set the heart in tune No, not even a trip to the moon.
Mrs. J. D. Sheriff Atlanta, Georgia

Never cross a fence with your gun in hand. Place it so that it is not pointing towards you or another hunter.

My husband says maraschino cherries (as sold in small jars) are made of papier-mache with cherry flavor and syrup. I don't agree. Who is right?
Mrs. R. F., Gumming

Maraschino cherries are cherries preserved in true or imitation

maraschino - a sweet liqueur distilled from the fermented juice of a bitter wild

cherry. The ones we normally buy are packed in the imitation juice. You're

We have an apple tree now in bloom. It blooms twice a year but only produces fruit once a year. What kind is this and why does it bloom twice a year?
F.G., Brooks
Apple trees sometimes bloom several times a year, especially if the tree is not in good condition. Your tree may need fertilizer. May we suggest that you contact your county agent for advice and identification of this tree.

Georgia's hunting regulations, seasons, and bag limits are designed to conserve the state's magnificent wildlife resources for generations to come. You can be a part of this effort by knowing the game laws and setting a safe example for your fellow sportsmen.
Safety First
Georgia averages 20 to 25 gunshot hunting accidents every year. About half of these are fatal The most common cause of hunting casualties in Georgia is "brush shooting" -firing into brush after hearing a noise. The second largest number of accidents comes from stumbling or falling with a loaded gun.
The professional shooter understands the gun he is using and knows how and how not to use it. You can readily recognize the pro-gunman by the cautious way he handles firearms. Professional gun handlers are usually around longer than amateurs because they know and follow the 10 commandments of gun safety.
Never point gun at anything you do not intend to shoot.
Treat every gun with the respect due a loaded gun.
Don't shoot at flat, hard surfaces or water.
Store guns and ammunition separately.
Be sure barrel is clear and that you use the proper shells.
Never climb a tree or fence or jump a ditch with a loaded gun.
Avoid alcoholic drinks before and during shopting.
Watch that muzzle! Keep safety on until ready to shoot.
Unload guns when not in use, leave actions open.
Be sure of target before you pull

Johnson Grass,
Friend or Foe
Under certain conditions, Johnson Grass (Sorghum halepense) can cause poisoning of livestock. Cattle mortality, sometimes extensive, has been reported in the past from California, Arizona, Texas, Alabama and Georgia ancl horse mortality in Maryland.
Under normal conditions, however, this grass furnishes good forage. The poisonous principle is HCN (hydrocyanic acid, also called prussic acid), which is one of the decomposition products formed by the action of enzymes upon the . cyanogenetic glycoside dhurrin.
Johnson Grass is dangerous during dry weather or after a frost, drought or high temperature.
Johnson Grass pasturage may be safely used if yellow (as opposed to dark green), if more than 2 ft. tall or if forming fruiting heads. If poisoning is suspected, a veterinarian should be contacted immediately as death can occur within 1 hour after eating plants with a high content of HCN. Samuel B. Jones, Jr., Botany Dept. U. GA.

Dear Editor: Our small country church is remodeling and we have eighteen 13' pews and eight 6' pews that we would like to sell reasonably. These pews are 50 or more years old and will probably be good for another SO. Our big problem is that our new pews will be delivered the 1st of October and we must move out the old pews by then. We would appreciate hearing from any of your readers who might be interested in these pews. Lee Walden Chairman of Deacons Providence Church Route 1 Avera, Georgia 30803

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Cleavers -- goosegrass or bedstraw, common names for Galium Aparine, is a weak almost perennial herb that can't stand upright unless it is climbing on and supported by surrounding vegetation. (Galium is from the Greek for a plant supposed to curdle milk.) Despite the terminal "s" cleavers is singular. Little dry fruits come from the greenish-white inconspicuous little flowers and the bristles on these fruits stick to anything that brushes against them -- scattering the seeds far and wide.
Though growing in damp places practically all over the world, cleavers are not well known to most people because they are usually so weak they are propped up by other vegetation and not noticed; however, according to old herbalists, a secret that will bring them undying fame is revealed. They say that cleavers is the reducing diet par excellence, painlessly paring pounds from plump persons.
If this secret was once common knowledge how did it become lost? The fact is that the plump figure came back in style
and women were then hunting herbs that would make them gain weight and by the time styles changed and the lean and lank figure was again popular, women had forgotten how to reduce on cleavers.
Springtime was probably the reducing time in ancient England because that is the only time they are fit to eat. The dish made from it was called "Lenten pottage," and many women must have resolved to pare otf a few extra pounds during Lent. The usefulness of cleavers is not limited to reducing as it has been considered a medicinal herb of no mean order . . . containing three distinct acids, one being found in Galium; citric acid, the same acid that makes lemons valuable. One of the other acids being tannic acid that is so valuable in treating numerous complaints. The Cleavers Tea is made from the seeds -- which try to imitate coffee, and was used as the medicinal agent.

Recognize this? It's a 1910 traction gear powered tractor. Sixty years has made a difference in look and performance of farm
machinery.____________

Georgia Hunting
(Continued from page 1)
that trigger. New Dove Season Regulations
The Georgia Game and Fish Commission has a new three-season approach to dove season this year. The seventy (70) hunting days allowed for dove shooting will be divided into three hunting periods to allow hunters all over the state a fair chance for some good shooting at this migratory game bird.
The hunting periods are as follows: First season, September 5 through September 26; Second season, October 21 through November 7; and third season, December 17 through January 15, 1971.
As part of these regulations, the hunting of doves over baited fields is unlawful. A baited field is defined as any area where grain, salt, or other foods which are attractive to such birds are unnaturally present. The foods, grains, etc. are considered unnatural when they are placed there for any reason other than a valid agricultural or farming operation.
The shooting hours are from 12 noon until sunset with a bag limit of 18 birds allowed for perhaps the last
time.

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently presented the Department of Agriculture's first outstanding achievement award to an independent food store. This year's winner was Joe Wilkin's IGA in Colquitt. Joe Wilkin accepted the award. The department award is based on excellence in sanitation and other areas of consumer protection which are regulated by the Depart ment of Agriculture. A similar award will be made to the outstanding chain store in Georgia as a part of this same program to encourage excellence-in Georgia retail food stores.

All my shrubbery is covered with some gray stuff. I have enclosed some so you can see it. Some of my plants have already died and it seems to be killing all of my shrubs. What will stop it?
Mrs. W. N., Springfield

This is lichen and grows on shrubbery planted in damp, shady areas. Your plants should be moved if possible. Captan sprayed on your plants will get rid of this pest.

The wasps are eating all my Catalpa worms. Do you know what will kill the wasps but not harm the worms?
K.H., Enigma
Whatever you use to kill the wasps will kill the worms. Destroy all worms you can find with white cocoons on their backs. These worms have the disease that attract wasps.
