Rural Development
Way Of Future
Population statistics completed April 1 of this year show 82 Georgia counties losing and 77 gaining people during the past decade. Those counties in urban and adjacent districts plus those along prime highway systems attracted population while decreasing trends continued in the old plantation and "piney woods" sections.
The University System of Georgia is concerned about the ominous trend toward people concentration in
burgeoning cities and the loss of manpower from typically described rural regions. On July 1, 1969 there was established by the Regents of the University System a Rural Development Center at Tifton.
The educational program of the Center will be directed toward full development and utilization of the social and economic potential of the Coastal Plain region of the State. A primary concern of the program is to help make the rural areas more attractive for people to live and thus bring about a more favorable

distribution of population in Georgia. Four initial objectives provide the
basic framework for the overall program:
1. Increase agricultural and forestry production efficiency through continued research in agriculture and forestry and the broad application of research findings.
2. Advance development of marketing and utilization of farm and forest commodities.
3. Aid community developments and solve problems concerning how and where people will live and relate to each other.
4. Further manpower training and utilization to provide more skilled workers in various types of agribusiness that are needed in rural areas and to assist general farm workers to prepare for new forms of employment as farm technology takes over their former jobs.
The Center is a cooperative agency involving the University of Georgia, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and other units of the University System. The Center will complement and expand the existing programs of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, the Cooperative Extension Service and the College of Agriculture of the University of Georgia. These units are already dealing effectively with

Blighted Corn
Perfectly Safe
Corn damaged by southern corn leaf blight is perfectly safe for human consumption or for use as silage or grain, according to research studies and extensive feeding tests.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said he had received several calls about the safety of this year's corn due to reports of the blight. "Any corn that is blight damaged will be black and readily visible," the Commissioner said, "but even then it would not be harmful to man or animals."
"In addition," Irvin said, "white corn that is used extensively in food products is generally resistant to the blight."
Farmers should be cautious, however, in using corn for silage that had lodged or fallen to the ground as it may be soured or molded. If farmers have doubts about this corn they should contact their local county agent or veterinarian.

many problems at the community, county and multi-county area levels. The Center's purpose will be to coordinate the functions of these units so that the total resources of the University System will bear significantly on rural, area-wide problems.
Center personnel will work closely with all agencies in Georgia involved in State development to help make efforts as meaningful as possible.
Georgia Publishes
1st Horse Survey
This week, the first Georgia Horse and Pony Survey is being mailed to horse enthusiasts and owners throughout the state.
In recent years the growth of Georgia's horse population has been of such,
magnitude that it is now a vital segment of the state's agribusiness economy. It was with this realization that the state survey of horses was undertaken.

AZALEAS DYING?
Your azaleas will die if the soil becomes too dry. Horticulturists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service say gardeners often assume they are doing a good job of watering. Frequently, however, they are not. The first growing season is critical to the survival of azaleas. Keep 'em watered and mulched.
In addition to statistical data, the survey publication also contains valuable information and history on each of the major breeds of horses
and ponies in the state. Statistical data includes: Number
of Horses and Ponies by Breed, Usage of Georgia Horses and Ponies, Where Stabled, and the Number of Owners and Total Horses and Ponies by County.
Breed information is supplied on the Quarter Horse, Shetland Pony, Tennessee Walking Horse, Welsh Pony, American Saddlebred, Appaloosa, Standardbred, Arabian, Palomino, Thoroughbred, and
Morgan. In this week's BULLETIN, we are
featuring the Quarter Horse and information from the survey, compiled by Pat Parks of the Crop Reporting Service, on this breed. Subsequent issues of the BULLETIN will feature the other breeds listed
above. If you filled out a questionaire for
use in the horse survey and have not received your copy, or if you have a special interest in horses and would like a copy of the survey please write: Information Office, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, S.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30334.

In my area all sweet milk is sold at $1.30 per gallon. All the stores stick together on this price. I can go out of town, say Atlanta, and buy milk cheaper. Who sets the price of milk in the grocery stores?
L.O.P., Eastanollee
For a number of years, milk prices were fixed in Georgia by the Georgia Milk Commission, which was declared unconstitutional in October of 1967. Since that time, the price of milk is determined by competition. Twice the
consumers of Georgia have voted down a constitutional amendment which
would have made milk pricing legal, and consequently, the current prices of
milk would have been lower. ***
Please tell me how to tell when it is time to gather peanuts. C.F.M., St. Marys
After the blooms have died, pull up a vine and check the peanuts in the middle of the roots. The inside of the hull should be turning dark and the meat should be firm.

Will you please tell me how to pickle eggs? I have a surplus of bantam eggs. Mrs. A. H. L., Bainbridge
Boil the eggs, peel, and pack in a quart jar. Fill the jar with vinegar (we
prefer the dark vinegar) and add 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Let the eggs remain until the skin has taken on a bronze tint, remove, salt and pepper to taste, garnish with mayonaise, and EAT. Good.

Horses Of Georgia
SILVKRWEFD
Silverweed -- or Potent! I la,
can be a survival sustenance for
lovers of good food. The golden
blossoms are common in damp
places and on stream banks --
especially stagnant ponds. The
roots, tasting like parsnips with
overtones of sweet potato, have
sometimes nourished people for
months when other provisions
were lacking.
Silverweed's relationship to the
rose family is shown by its Jone,
long-stemmed and five petaled
inch-wide bright yellow blossoms,
which have the appearance of solitary roses. These eventually
Quarter Horse
produce fruit that reminds one of
dry strawberries. The roots which were Indian favorites are good both raw and cooked -- being thick and fleshy.
The Quarter horse, Georgia's most popular breed, accounts for about one fourth of all the horses in the state. Approximately 34,100 of the total 143,400 horses in Georgia are Quarter Horses.
The easiest way to prepare

Bake in a moderate 350-degree
oven for half an hour. These roots are also good with
salt pork -- cooked as you would usually fix other vegetables to boil or in casseroles.
It stands to reason that an edible as popular as silverweed

by the American Quarter Horse Association shows only forty-eight registered Quarter Horses for Georgia. The 1969" survey indicates just over thirty-four thousand Quarter Horses located in the State. All of these, of course, would not be registered.
The Quarter Horse was originally known as the American Quarter Running Horse. The name was due to the breed's great speed over a short distance of around a quarter of a mile. Most writers consider the Quarter Horse to be the oldest American horse breed. It was a cross between Spanish and English stock.
According to the American
prominently in the characteristics of the breed were Steel Dust and Shiloh.
The Quarter Horse averages less than fifteen hands in height and weighs about 1,150 pounds. He has a gentle disposition and is normally very dependable.
Probably the most outstanding characteristic is the ability to make lightning fast starts and to turn on a dime. It is this unique feature that makes the Quarter Horse of such value in working cattle. The breed really came into its own on the cattle ranches of the Southwest where a good "cow pony" was absolutely essential.

Are Important
From birth to death records and family papers are important and they are getting more so every day. There are some that you need at your fingertips for ready reference.
There are others of a more permanent nature that you need to keep in a safe place which is fireproof. Some of these may be replaceable and others may not.
A safe deposit box at a bank or a fireproof safe at home might be the answer to this need. If you rent a safe deposit box, a record of what is stored there should be kept at home.
What records to keep and where and how to keep them can be one of the most important decisions a family can make.
Permanent records might include wills, birth certificates, adoption papers, marriage certificates, deeds, abstracts, mortgages, notes, savings bonds, military discharge papers, insurance policies, social security duplicate cards and other security instruments.
Spray with 2,4-D. Be sure to spray in the spring before the vine blooms.
*** I am interested in building some bird houses and would like to know what size hole is needed for the Blue bird, the Wren, and the Purple Martin.
B.D., Canton
Blue bird, 2 inches in diameter, the Wren, 11/2 inches in diameter, and the Purple Martin, 3 inches in diameter*. * *
I have several ponds open to the public for fishing and need to plant some trees for shade near the water. What kind would be the fastest growing and make the best shade trees?
K.H., Enigma
Catalpa trees. They not only provide shade but fish bait as well.
RESPONSE A few pinwheels of whirleygigs placed in a fruit tree or grape vine will save your fruit from the birds.

To prevent freezer odors, open a bag of charcoal by slitting it down one side and lay the whole bag in the freezer and leave it for several days. After cleaning a freezer, keep a piece of fresh charcoal on a shelf to keep odors absorbed.
Mrs. B. J., Summerville Place four or five charcoal bricketts, barbecue style, in your freezer to keep odors away. Repeat at intervals.
