A Better World
Through 4-H
The Georgia 4-H Club is recognized as having the greatest state 4-H program of any state in the nation. There are over 150,000 4-H members in the State of Georgia alone. This is primarily due to the interest and enthusiasm shown by adult 4-H leaders, county and state extension staff members, 4-H donors, and more important, the individual 4-H members.
Four-H work is the youth phase of the University of Georgia Coopera-
tive Extension Service educational program. The overall purpose of 4-H is to provide greater educational opportunities t o help young people to grow mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. 4-H work complements and supplements the training boys and girls receive in the home, school and church. Of the more than 150,000 members in Georgia, which incidentally is the largest 4-H membership of any state in the nation, about one-third of them are farm boys and girls; one-third live in rural areas but not on farms and one-third live in small towns, suburban or urban areas. We are proud of the fact that 4-H

is of such a nature and scope that there is something of value in it for any girl or boy regardless of where they may live.
Any boy or girl, regardless of place of residence or interest may be a 4-H member. A young person, to be a member, must agree to carry out a learn-by-doing educational project under the guidance of a county extension agent or a volunteer leader.
These learn-by-doing projects provide opportunities for young people to learn the principles of our great private enterprise system, the dignity of work, the satisfaction of doing a job well and to explore a wide variety of careers which will help them select a vocation.
Last year, nearly 350,000 of these projects were undertaken by Georgia 4-H members. Although the primary purpose of these learn-by-doing projects is the development of the boy and the girl into better citizens and leaders, their estimated value is approximately ten million dollars.
Working with the county agents and county extension home economists in Georgia are nearly 9,000 adult volunteer leaders and 2,535 teen leaders who give freely of their time, talents and other resources in helping with the 4-H program.
These agents and volunteer leaders give us guidance but we plan and conduct our own programs, elect our own officers and decide on the educational projects we will undertake.
4-H is democracy in action and

Special Tobacco Notice
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has cautioned all tobacco farmers not to harvest their tobacco too early as U.S.D.A. graders have informed him that premature harvesting is reducing the quality and grade of some of this year's crop.
Hanging Baskets
Offer Unusual Beauty
In recent years hanging baskets have made a great and most welcome come back. Many different types such as plastic, wood, and wire frames have made them more attractive and appealing to gardaners. Liners for the baskets are now available in many attractive colors and materials.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor: I hope you find these suggestions worthy of your valuable
space. When the boll weevil is disturbed it does not fly away but
curls up and falls to the ground. After cotton is gathered the stalks can be plowed under and thus killing all weevils buried. If 5% of the cotton stalks are left on each acre, the weevils will continue to visit them, and poisoning could be continued on the remaining weevils, and that at very little cost.
The boll weevil came here in the early 1920's and is still here. It is controlled while being poisoned during growth of the crop but after maturity the poisoning ceases which is about six weeks, resulting in uninterrupted propagation.
For 50 years the boll weevil has not been extinguished. By this method changes are great it could be extinguished in two years.
This state so badly needs reproduction of the Sea Island (long staple) cotton, but this can never be achieved while the weevil is here.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
4 MEDIUM'03 LIGHT
DXVARF MALLOW
The mallow family is so large
and closely related to other
plants--to the amateur eye, that it
is definitely one of our most im-
portant plants. It is not native to
America and has a limited range,
preferring salty marshes and
ponds, but the term marshmallow
is familiar to everyone.
The most important species
from the herbalist's point of view
is the marsh-mallow, Althea
officinalis, because originally
marshmallows were made of the
extract from a real marsh-mallow
root and was also considered a
medicine as well as sweetmeat.
(Today our marshmallows are
made of egg albumin, syrup,
starch, gum, flavoring and
seldom contain any of the mallow
root.)
The flowers which are pale
pink will bloom profusely through
August & September-showing
their close relationship to the
hibiscus, stately hollyhock, and
althaeas. Cotton is a member of
this family.
The common mallow, Malva
rotundifolia, which covers the
country dooryards and roads is
still used for various medicinal
purposes and is commonly boiled
with meat in Egypt. The roots are
edible and were mentioned in the
Book of Job in the Old Testament,
making this one of the first wild-
food plants to be written about. In
Chapter XXX, verse 4, Job is
complaining that he has fallen so
far from his formerly honorable
estate that even the semi-ne'er-
do-wells who live in the wilder-
ness and "cut up mallows...for
their meat" are now deriding
him.
Romans used the roots as a
vegetable dish as well as
medicine.
Pliny wrote,
"Whosoever shall take a spoonful
of the Mallows, shall that day be
free of all diseases that may come
to him." If we believe these
adages, we could provide double
insurance by also eating "an
apple a day to keep the doctor
away."
4-H Clubs
(Continued from page 1) because of the experiences we have in 4-H, we have a better understanding of and apreciation for the democratic principles of government and we are better qualified to assume citizenship and leadership responsibilities.
The educational as well as recreational, soiritual, and social aspects of the total 4-H program in Georgia have reached over 405,000 young people in Georgia this year.
The 4-H program in Georgia has grown from a once small farm club in Newton County to the greatest State 4-H Program in the Nation, and above all it is an organization in which young people enjoy participating and working "To Make the Best Better."

Which trees and shrubs should not be planted near a septic tank drain field? I have small maple trees that are 4 feet from the drain field.
D. D. M., Tiger
You have a no-no. No variety of trees should be planted near a drain. Maple, elm, and several others of this variety are worse than others to stop up a drain. Do not plant any shrubs or trees where the drip line of the trees will be near the drainage line.
"Mocking birds" are my problem. What they don't eat of my tomatoes and pears, the squirrels do. Shooting is restricted here.
B. A. P., Richmond Hill
Game and Fish advises hanging white strips of cloth in your trees and around your tomatoes. Put dried peas in empty plastic milk jugs and hang them around in your trees. They make a rattling noise when the wind blows and scares the birds. Any type of scarecrow device will work until the birds wise up. As for the squirrels, we are still working on this ourselves.
Will you please publish the name and address of the Better Business Bureau? I have been taken by a mail order book company.
C. A. M., Tifton
Better Business Bureau, 212 Healey Building, Atlanta, 30303. May we also suggest that you contact your Chamber of Commerce, Business Ethics Divi sion, for assistance. Another suggestion--don't send money in the mail until you see the product or have checked with one of the above.
I have a herd of cattle in middle Georgia and would like a pair of white birds such as those I have seen with herds in south Georgia. Where can I find these?
R. B., Mclntyre
This bird, a frequent companion of cattle, is called a cattle Egret and lives as far north as middle Georgia. We contacted Dr. Ed Snoddy, Research Entomologist with the Agricultural Experiment Station in Experiment, Georgia and he is going to help you locate some of these birds.
While traveling back from our vacation, we stopped in Forsyth at one of those "quickie hamburger joints" and that is just what it was. The "hamburgers" were so bad even our dog wouldn't eat them and the milkshakes so bad our sons couldn't drink them. Why are places like this allowed to operate?
D. C., Stockbridge
We asked the Health Department to check on this along with our men. It seems this place is part of a chain out of Tennessee and the "hamburgers" are ground beef with a soybean flour filler. The "burgers" are char-broiled quick frozen, and then re-heated in a microwave oven before being sold. Believe it or not, this is quite common and is under U.S.D.A. regulations. The milkshakes are made from a milk shake mix from a dairy here in Atlanta. They may not be too good, but they won't hurt you.
