ACC For Apples

Wednesday, January 14, 1970

NUMBER 2

FINAL PHASE REACHED

Small But Active
The programs of the Agricultural Commodity Commission for Apples are financed by an assessment of a penny per bushel on apples grown in Georgia and sold.
Although the annual budget of the commission is the smallest of all the commodity groups, approximately $3,000, the commission has been able to accomplish great things with small amounts.
Apple Week
During 1969, the commission sponsored Georgia Apple Week which received radio, T.V. and press coverage. One Atlanta station sponsored
(Our guest columnist this week is W, G. Wingate of Ellijay, chairman of the Agricultural Commodity Commission for Af-
a "Teacher of the Day Contest" during this observance.
One of the most effective promotions of the Georgia apple was accomplished by giving away 12,000 beautiful samples of the fruit through a local bank.
Apple Queen
An Apple Queen is selected each year and makes many appearances on radio and television to promote the Georgia apple. When the Atlanta Braves observed Georgia Apple night, network coverage was given to the queen and her product.
During 1969, the ACC purchased 121 minutes of radio time to promote Georgia apples.
Quality Control
The marketing order under which the ACC for apples functions requires that all apples offered for sale in Georgia be required to show variety, grade and weight or count. No apples may be offered for sale on the fresh market that are not of good grade and only U.S. No. 1 grade apples may be sold in closed containers.
This assures the housewife of good quality when she buys a Georgia apple and through the ACC's promotion, housewives are buying even more of this good Georgia product.

MULCHING SHRUBS
Some gardeners remove the old mulch from around their shrubs each year. Horticulturists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service say this time-consuming practice is usually unnecessary. Usually you can just add new material on top of an old mulch without detrimental effect.

IN HOG CHOLERA FIGHT

Georgia has reached the final phase in its effort to eradicate hog cholera. Official notification of the achievement in the nationwide program was received from the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

One of northeast Georgia's largest swine operations is owned and operated by Doyle Mitchell in Walton County. Mitchell produces over 3,000 head of cross breeds each year.
Pig Crop Up 8%
Georgia's 1969 fall pig crop is estimated at 1,248,000 head, an eight percent increase above the June to No-vember 1968 crop.
Sows farrowed during the period totaled 171,000 head, up 10,000 from the same period last year.
Georgia farmers reported, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, intentions to farrow 211,000 sows during the December 1969 to May 1970 period. This would be 12 percent above last year and 17 percent above the same period in 1968.

Georgia is one of the first major hog-producing states in the nation to reach this goal. Although officially ranking as the nineteenth state to obtain the fourth and final phase of the eradication program, many of the states included in this number have very few hogs. George is one of the ten top swine states in the U.S.
Hog cholera is a highly contagious and deadly disease that has in years past cost Georgia producers millions of dollars annually in losses.
Georgia began its hog cholera eradication program in the early
1960's. At that time the state began
paying indemnity for any hogs de-
stroyed or lost due to cholera. In 1964, federal funds were made available on a cooperative basis for in-
demnity payments as Georgia moved into phase three of the program.
Several other states then patterned their program by the highly success-
ful and original Georgia plan of eradication.

Service Duplication

Another step was taken this week to curb duplication of effort and services of state and federal agencies when the Georgia Department of
Agriculture and the Federal Food and Drug Administration entered into an agreement of responsibility concerning food warehouses, corn milling and beverage manufacturing.

The agreement was made in an effort to provide more efficient consumer protection and economical functioning of both agencies.
For some years there has been a duplication .of responsibility of the two agencies, especially in food warehouse inspection, milled corn products and firms manufacturing

non-alcoholic, carbonated and/or still
beverages. In general, the Department of Ag-
riculture will assume the responsibility of inspection in these three fields. This will be accomplished at no additional expense to the department as it is already required by law to enter these places of business regularly for sanitary and wholesome inspections.
The two agencies agreed to pro-
vide each with all reports and information concerning their activities in these fields. This is to assure that the obligations of each agency as to
law and public protection are being met adequately.

Commissioner Tommy Irvin and District Director of the Food and Drug Administration Leslie McMillin sign an agreement of responsibility which will curb duplication of services of the two agencies and create a more efficient and effective means of protecting the consumer.

The Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration already are cooperating in medicated feed inspections. In this program the Department also assumes the responsibility and the results have been praised by industry and government officials.
The Department of Agriculture cooperates with other federal agencies in programs such as meat inspection to assure the consumer a quality and wholesome product in as economical and efficient manner as possible.

culture department, Dr. J. F. Andrews, encouraged hog producers to keep their guard up against an outbreak of cholera and to report any suspicion of cholera immediately.
"With the continued cooperation of hog producers and livestock barn operators, Georgia can become certified free of hog cholera very quickly now," Commissioner Tommy Irvin said.
Swine production accounts for over six percent of the state's total farm income and contributes more than 67 million dollars annually to the state's economy.
Tax Tips Offered
By Ag. Economist
It's time for another year and another accounting to the Internal Revenue Service. However, you may find that you can save yourself some time and money if you follow a few tips for saving tax dollars.
W. I. Golden, Extension economistfarm management specialist with the University of Georgia, said good records are a must to file your taxes accurately and to guard against overlooking deductible expenses.
Golden offers several tips on making certain you do not pay more tax than you should.
A standard mileage rate of ten cents per mile for the first 15,000 miles of business use and seven cents for excess mileage may be used by an individual in lieu of reporting actual operating and ownership costs.
Along with itemized medical expenses you can claim five cents per mile for travel primarily for and essential to medical care.
One deduction many people do not take advantage of is a provision which allows you to charge five cents per mile for mileage of your car when used for charitable services that qualify as deductible contributions.-. However, the Extension specialist added that when using any of the standard mileage charges discussed you must be careful to deduct this portion of your car use when calculating overall deductible expenses.
If you employ your children in your business, you may charge this as an expense.
If the child is under 19 years of age or a student for five months or more and you furnish over half of his support, you can claim the regular exemption. If he earns over $600 he must file and possibly pay taxes if he earns over $900.
Since the taxpayer is held respon-

We Get Letters

Dear Editor: I receive the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN and I like it very much. I especially enjoyed reading the article "Simple, Cheap Method for Producing Plants" in the December 10, 1969 issue. I also enjoyed the article on tobacco and while I don't smoke now I used to when I was a kid in South Carolina. I still have a plantation down there and one of these days I'm going back down there. I wonder if any of your readers could tell me how to make an old time fruit cake; I don't mean the kind they make now but real fruit cake. Also, I wonder if anyone could tell me how to make old fashioned chicken pie. My mother used to roll out the dough, put in the chicken, hard boiled eggs, wrap it all in cheesecloth and cook it. I'm also trying to get a book on soul food but most of the old timers have died off and the people nowadays don't know what real soul food is. Thank you again for your paper and keep up the good work.

Dear Editor: Can you or any of your readers tell me how to crack black walnuts to remove the meat whole, or nearly so? The BULLETIN is so much better now.

Notice to Flower Advertisers ^
All flower ads must be limited to 30 words or five different flowers each week. This means if you generally advertise eight or ten flowers each week in the Bulletin, you should choose five to advertise one week and list the additional three or five the next week.

This limit is necessary due to the lack of space in the Bulletin as well as the fact that some flower advertisers have been listing as many as 12 varieties each week.
The editors believe this should, not work a hardship on anyone as flowers are generally seasonal. In addition, you can rotate the flowers you wish to advertise week to week.

In years past, flowers were advertised only once a month in the BULLETIN. In order to continue advertising them weekly, this limit has become necessary.
Thank you, The Editors

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Handicrafts Quilt Pattern

Wild onion -- (Allium) is the coast to coast delicacy that gave a city its name. Wild onions, including the leeks, the chives and the garlics, grow wild all over North America except in the far northern regions. Indians used them not only for the provocative taste they give to blander foods but also as a main part of the meal. Settlers and frontiersmen soon followed suit.
When Pere Marquette and his band journeyed from Green Bay, Wisconsin, in 1674 to near our present Chicago -- whose name was taken from the Indian word "shikato," meaning place where wild onions are strong smelling --. their main food was wild leeks, probably Allium leaves similar to those of the domestic varieties. They, like domestic onions, grow from bulbs and flowers appear on naked shafts. The one characteristic to depend on is the characteristic odor. Although you won't like all of the breeds, especially the strong tasting field garlic, Allium vir.eale, (much beloved by cows -- we can all rememberat one time or another when the butter, milk, and cream was ruined because the cows had been into wild onions,) they are all good to eat. Try them to find out your likes and dislikes.
As the Indian nations knew well, wild onions will enhance the flavor of almost any game or vegetable. Eggs are wonderful with wild onions. For a superb one-dish meal for four that can be stirred together in minutes, saute I/ 2 cup chopped wild onions in 3 tablespoons of butter, before the onions brown, add a large can of tomatoes, I/ 8 teaspoon each of tarragon and basil and a minched clove of garlic, cook until bubbling throughout, then add 9 eggs and stir continuously and slowly to scramble. Serve while everything is seething.
AMARYLLIS TIP
Looking for an indoor pot plant you can start right away? Henry Clay, Extension Service horticulturist at the University of Georgia, says you might try planting an amaryllis. They are quite unique in that the stem and flowers are produced long before the leaves appear.

A variation of the old "Shoo-Fly" quilt is most originally called the "Corn and Beans." It is an effective 9-patch design whose charmingly patterned bits of appliques make up into a surprisingly pretty quilt. One can easily discern the "corn" by its triangular shape and the other blocks which are developed in printed fab

Tax Tips
(Continued from page 1) sible to prove his return if challenged by IRS it is essential that good tax records be maintained. Generally the three most recent years' records are adequate. Golden emphasized that copies of the tax returns for each year should be kept with the tax records.
"Many people do not allow themselves to take advantage of all the deductions available," Golden said. "They might realize a tax savings if they would keep good records and guard against overlooking deductible expenses."
