Pecans are one of the most important horticultural crops in Georgia. We lead the Nation in production
of improved varieties and in 1969 our crop was valued at $25,425,000 ac-

Spring has officially arrived at least according to the calendar. Gardeners should not get overly excited about spring gardening since there is a distinct possibility of more winter-like temperatures and frost in some areas.

cording to the Crop Reporting Service. Keen competition for Georgia is developing in other states, par-
ticularly Arizona and New Mexico,
where pecan culture is based on irrigation.
Research scientists of the Univer-
sity of Georgia Experiment Stations throughout the State recently joined
together to form a
working group for coordinated re-
search on all
phases of pecan production, h a n dling, and market-
ing. In addition to
the research that has been carried
on in past years, new research has begun in nutrition, disease and insect control, weed con-
trol, and other cultural practices. Quality of our shelled pecans is a
factor of great importance and will

Most gardeners want to rush out as soon as mild temperatures and bright beautiful days occur. Many times the rush is to plant non-hardy annual plants and bulbs. These plants or seed may be killed or respond very slowly because of cool soil and night-time temperatures, particularly in the northern areas.
Regardless of your location, there are a few important tasks that need attention. Some of the tasks such as pruning and preparing flower beds and vegetable beds will require considerable labor. Better plan your task according to amount of work needed in order to gradually condition your muscles and harden your hands.
PRUNING Early April is a good time to do some severe pruning on many shrubs. Here's a rule to keep in mind. Any shrub which produces its flowers and/or fruit on later occurring new growth may be pruned now.

be studied in relation to new production practices. Scientists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture are aiding in research on insect problems and shelling procedures.
The prospects for increasing yields of established plantings are very bright. Yields of 800 Ib. per acre or more are becoming common throughout Georgia. Alternate-year bearing, a serious drawback to production in past years, has become a problem of lesser .-concern where good cultural practices are followed.
A very important practice in this regard is the control of leaf diseases and insects through a rigorous spray program. Preliminary results from Georgia research suggest that when leaves are kept in a healthy condition to the end of the growing season each year, yield fluctuation from year to year is much less pronounced.
Irrigation of pecan orchards, to supplement rainfall, is being used' by a few growers. Although research information on the value of irrigating pecans in Georgia is not ."available yet, the practice appears to be beneficial in increasing yield and quality in most instances.

tions of State Parks J. B. Naugle, Director of the Department of Public Safety Col. R. H. Burson and Secretary of State Ben Fortson planted several of the roses. Others will be planted at State Parks, State Patrol offices, the Governor's Mansion and other state properties. Thank you again for proving Georgians are the best and most generous people of all.

Sale Of Bad Seed Stopped

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has stopped the sale of more than 125,000 pounds of poor quality lawn grass seed slated for
Check Post Office
On Late Bulletins
During the past few weeks we have received a number of complaints from subscribers that they have been receiving their FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN as late as Friday, Saturday, or in extreme cases, Monday.
This is not due to any fault or change in practice of the BULLETIN office, the printer or the mailer. The BULLETINS are being mailed on time and at the same time each week. Generally speaking, you should receive your BULLETIN by Wednesday the date of publication.

sale to Atlanta area home owners. Irvin said the seed was found by
State Department of Agriculture inspectors in both wholesale and retail outlets throughout the city.
Some of the seed was fescue which was mislabeled, had a poor germination percentage and contained noxi-
ous weed seed. Stop sale orders were also placed against lawn grass mix-
tures that were also mislabeled and contained noxious weed seed.
Irvin said one particular brand of lawn seed contained up to 39% of an unidentified filler material ground up to add useless bulk and weight.
In announcing the action, the Commissioner urged homeowners to buy lawn grass seed from reputable dealers and to read the label carefully to see what they are getting. He reminded homeowners that they should not plant rye grass seed or mixtures containing large amounts of rye
grass seed at this time of the year because rye grass will not stand up to warm weather temperatures.

time. The answer is simple logic
the interval between pruning and regrowth will be short. Shrubs that
need severe pruning will not appear butchered or stubby except for a few short wee ks.
Late winter or spring flowering shrubs should be pruned immediate-
ly after flowering. Pruning at that
time will not reduce flowering yet, will encourage new growth. Don't be
afraid to prune most dramatically. Plants such as spirea, flowering
quince, almond and forsythia respond
beautifully to pruning. In case plants
of this type have outgrown their
space or have become leggy, you may cut them at ground level.
AZALEAS AND CAMELLIAS
Azaleas and camellias are plants
which many gardeners do not prune. There seems to be a fear or miscon-
ception that pruning is harmful. The
opposite is true. They require shap-
ing just as other shrubs. If you can't stand the thought of
cutting or pruning these plants, you may need to condition your thinking.
Here's one way cut a few branches
while they are flowering use them
in your home or share them with a
friend.
After they have flowered, prune more. Remember to cut below where
you desire the new growth to occur.
This applies to most plants. Cuts
should be made at irregular inter-

showgrounds three miles north of Georgia resident receive his BUL-

We Get Letters

Dear Editor: Mr. and Mrs. W. Bruce wrote a letter about organic fer-
tilizer to you. I recall how my father made fertilizer for our flower garden:
Use largest wooden barrel or tub available. Everytime you rake leaves, put as many in barrel as possible. When you clean chicken houses, put a layer of chicken fertilizer on leaves, and then a layer of lime or potash. Every time you wash clothes or scrub floors, pour all soapy, dirty water over layers of leaves. By the time the water fills the barrel, it rots the leaves and you have a very fine fertilizer, made a cheap way.

Dear Editor: While on a visit to St. Simon we were served "peanut
soup." I would like to know if any of your readers have the recipe or if this is a canned product.
We enjoy the BULLETIN very much and especially the recipes and information on flowers.

Semi-hardy plants such as azaleas and camellias will survive low temperatures better if they are planted in a partially shaded area with protection from the winter sun and wind, say Extension Service horticulturists.

Georgia's pulpwood production advanced to a new record high in 1968 when over 6.9 million cords were produced, according to foresters with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.

To thaw a frozen unstuffed turkey, home economists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service suggest that you place the bird in the refrigerator for two or three days-depending on the size.
***
SHRUB WATERING It's quite simple to water shrubs.
However, horticulturists with the University of Georgia Extension Service say many gardeners fail to water their plantings properly. Lay the garden hose in the shrub bed and let a slow stream of water run for several hours. Water to a depth of 12 inches.

DAYLILY TIP
When mulching daylilies after planting or transplanting, horticulturists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service suggest that you use ground bark or pine straw. Both of these mulches will help conserve moisture and keep down weeds.
EASY MEASURE Before measuring syrup, honey,
or molasses, grease the measuring cup or spoon thoroughly with butter to prevent the syrup from clinging. Home economists with the University of Georgia Extension Service point out this makes washing-up easier and measuring more accurate.
