Tobacco Farmers Face Big Problem
It recently came to my attention that Georgia tobacco farmers were facing a serious problem that could virtually eliminate the exportation of Georgia tobacco to foreign countries.
Today, approximately 80 percent of the tobacco crop in this state is bought by exporters for use in other
countries. The problem at
hand stems from the use of DOT and TDE insecticides in controlling tobacco insects in Georgia. Several foreign countries have announced that they are drastically reducing the tolerance of DOT and TDE on any tobacco shipped into their countries for use in cigarettes. As a result of these reports, I called a meeting of tobacco representatives from throughout Georgia, from the federal offices in Washington, from chemical companies supplying tobacco farmers and of buyers of Georgia flue-cured tobacco.
In essence, it appears that if there is DDT and TDE residue on this year's, the 1970, crop of tobacco sold in Georgia, the buyers will not be back in Georgia in 1971.
That means that NOW, during this growing season, Georgia tobacco farmers must discontinue the use of DDT and TDE entirely or the $100 million tobacco industry in Georgia could be ruined.
Germany, one of the biggest buyers of Georgia tobacco, has indicated they will carefully analyze this year's purchases and base future importation on the amount of DDT and TDE found on this crop. It is further indicated that other countries intend to do likewise.
Georgia produces the finest quality of flue-cured tobacco in the world. However, these buyers have indicated that they will have to sacrifice the quality, of Georgia tobacco and purchase elsewhere if the DDT and TDE is not eliminated.
As a result of this meeting, a committee was appointed to conduct meetings throughout the tobacco producing counties to warn farmers against the use of DDT and TDE residue and to instruct them in substitute insecticides tested by the Experiment Stations and recommended by the Agricultural Extension Service.
This committee consists of members of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Farm Bureau Federation, the National Farmers Organization, the Extension Service and the Agricultural Commodity Com-
mission for Tobacco. I am most concerned and anxious
for Georgia tobacco farmers to comply with these recommendations and to stop the use of DDT and TDE so that we may continue to enjoy one of the best tobacco markets in the
nation.

PLANT FOOD ACT OF 1970. This
bill is a complete revision of the fertilizer laws in Georgia. By lowering the tolerances allowed to companies that manufacture or sell fertilizer in Georgia, the bill assures the farmers and homeowner of a higher quality product when purchasing fertilizer.
GEORGIA AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES PROMOTION ACT. This bill requires the attorney general to furnish legal council for all agricultural commodity commissions. However, the attorney general will procure outside legal council upon request of any commodity commission. This will allow more of the commodity commission's funds to be spent for research, education and promotion of their product.
TOBACCO LEGISLATION. Several bills and resolutions of interest to tobacco farmers were passed by the 1970 Legislature. Of particular importance is a bill increasing the number of members on the Tobacco Advisory Board from nine to twelve members. This gives the board, which recommends an opening date for Georgia tobacco markets, broader farmer representation throughout the tobacco producing counties.
In addition a resolution urging tobacco farmers to use only those pesticides approved by USDA and Experiment Stations.
A resolution was also passed urging the Georgia-Florida Tobacco Warehouse Association to consider taking steps to police and hold to a minimum the sale of out-of-belt tobacco on Georgia warehouse floors during the regular selling season.
A resolution calling for the Secretary of Agriculture of the United States to lower the national yield goal and increase the acreage on tobacco allotments was also passed.
By resolution, the Assembly urged the 34-man Industry-wide Flue Cured Tobacco Marketing Committee to add three additional members from the Georgia-Florida-Alabama producing area. It was also resolved that this same committee permit the Georgia-Florida flue-cured tobacco belt' to increase the sheet weight limit of tobacco allowed to be sold from 200 pounds to 250 pounds.
DIXON BEE BILL. Legislation providing for indemnity payments for hives of bees destroyed due to American or European foul brood disease was passed into law.
POT-BOUND
Pot-bound shrubs those grown in containers and having a heavy concentration of roots on the outside of the soil mass usually make very little top growth after transplanting until the roots grow out and become established in the soil, according to Cooperative Extension Service horticulturists.

What 9i Mild
Wild ginger -- Asarum, refreshing tonic and flavoring from the forests, is a woodland perennial with aromatic rootstocks and usually kidney shaped leaves useful only in the shady places of a wild garden. Flowers eventually bloom in May on short stems -- so close to the ground that sometimes you hardly see them. The plant is also known as Indian ginger, Canada snakeroot and Vermont snakeroot.
Some of the Indian tribes regularly used wild ginger roots for flavoring. The leaves are aromatic when bruised or crushed but the roots are the part used and are milder than the unrelated ginger from the Orient. There are two ways to use the roots of wild ginger-gathered in early spring after they have been well scrubbed. The first of thesecommon among the pioneers is merely to dry them, grind them into a powder and use them like the commercial spice they then resemble.
Candied wild ginger comes close to being some woodsmen's favorite sweet. Wash the roots well and then cut them into short pieces -- simmer until tender, barely covered with liquid made by dissolving 2 cups of sugar in each cup of water. Then drain, cooking the fluid longer if it still does not seem to be quite thick enough. You can keep the wild ginger in the syrup but many prefer to bottle both separately -first letting the pieces dry on waxed paper or foil for several days and then rolling them in granulated white sugar. This way you can use the syrjp as a sauce for desserts.
Once regarded as efficacious in treating whooping cough, this is still commonly used in parts of eastern Canada as a remedy for digestive disorders. If you would like to try it just add I/ 2 teaspoonful of the powdered or granulated root to a cup of boiling water. Drink this 2 tablespoons at a time as often as necessary.
