School Lunch FutureAt Stake
National School Lunch Week is being celebrated throughout the country Oct. 1319. This year the annual recognition has direct meaning to all Georgians, especially the state's farmers. Georgia's own school lunch program, rated as one of the finest in the nation, today faces a problem of how to maintain that standing.
The goal of the state school lunch program remains the same: To provide the kind of nutritionally balanced meals that children need for good health and for alertness in learning and to provide these meals at a price low enough so that most Georgia children can buy them.
The success of school lunch programs can be measured by the number of children who eat the lunch served in the school cafeteria. In Georgia more than 750,000 do this
every day a proportion far higher than in many states that have much greater resources.
The size of the school lunch program makes it a major market for Georgia farm products. Food purchases total $30 million a year. A single day's menu in the state's schools can require 10 carloads of chicken, 131,250 pounds of meat, or 64,600 dozen eggs, plus more than half a million pounds of fruits and vegetables, and more than 40,000 gallons of milk. Georgia's schools in one year use more than 500,000 pounds of peanut butter, the chief product made the state's No. 1 row crop peanuts.
The largest share of the school lunch cost is paid by the pupils themselves. Federal contributions in cash and commodities help keep the price down. Georgia's 10,000 school lunch workers have struggled to maintain low lunch prices. They know from experience that each increase in the lunch price means that 10 to 20 percent of the children have to drop out of the cafeteria line.
Governor Proclaims October
Beef Cattle Month In Georgia
WHEREAS:
The beef cattle industry is a vital part of Georgia's economy and being one of the leading agriculture commodities produced in the State; and
Rising costs of supplies and services now threaten the low-cost non-profit school lunch. Last year the Georgia General Assembly voted $1.6 million for school lunch. But the money could not be spent because of a legal interpretation. To clear the way, a Constitutional Amendment has been drawn up for voter approval in the Nov. 5 election. If Georgia's voters approve Amendment No. 4, it will provide the needed authority for use of state funds for school lunch, and it will assure continuance of Georgia's school lunch program at the level that has earned it nation-wide recognition.

Georgia beef production ranks 18th in the United States, yet is only producing 58% of the beef consumed in Georgia; and
The ideal climate and large acreage of land in Georgia is highly adaptable to beef production, the expansion of this industry is essential to the economy and the supply of food to citizens of Georgia; and
The people need to know more about the Georgia beef cattle industry and to recognize its great value to Georgia that beef produced in Georgia today is equal to or better than beef produced in any other area; now
I, tester Maddox, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim the month of October, 1968, as "BEEF MONTH" in Georgia, and call upon all Georgians to recognize that a sound beef cattle industry is essential in supplying an abundance of "red meat" for our citizens.
