Mass Fire Ant Meeting Slated Saturday In Tifton
The Chairmen of the Senate and House Agriculture Committees of the Georgia General Assembly have called a public hearing to be held in Tifton on Saturday, Jan. 20, to air the state's fire ant problem.
Sen. Brooks Pennington of the 45th Senatorial District and Rep. Dorsey Matthews of Cclquitt County said the meeting was being called to determine the extent of the fire ant problem in Georgia and how best to accelerate eradication efforts.
In a joint letter to members of the Senate and House from fire ant infested areas, Sen. Pennington and Rep. Matthews advised their legislative colleagues that the seriousness of the problem called for immediate attention and definite action.
Interested persons from all fire ant infested areas are urged to attend and express their views. A large delegation from the General Assembly as well as agricultural leaders from over the state are expected to be present.
The meeting will get underway at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and lunch will be available in the college dining hall at a minimum charge.
