Auction Markets, Farmers Cooperate As Hog Quarantine Continues

How Old Is Your Peachtree?
University of Georgia plant breeders are looking for old seedling peachtrees to use in breeding new peach rootstockc resistant to soil pests and to cold injury. If you have a seedling tree known to be 25-30 years old in North Georgia or 18-25 in South Georgia, Dr. F .E. Johnstone, Jr. of the Department of Horticulture would like to know about it. He might want to take cuttings or obtain seed from it to aid in the breeding work on rootstocks.
Information about very old budded trees or orchards is also important especially if the rootstock on which the trees are budded or the source of the trees is known.
Your information or help in this matter might be the important link to help solve the increasingly serious problem of peachtree decline. A long-lived rootstock would be a big help to peach growers everywhere, whether they grow one tree or 100,000.

By Phil Campbell Commissioner of Agriculture
Two weeks ago, on April 12, it was necessary for the Department of Agriculture to impose a quarantine on the movement of hogs in the state in order to curb an outbreak of cholera.
During the period January 1 to April 25 there have been 67 cases of cholera reported. Twenty-five counties, primarily in the Southeast section of the state, have suffered losses due to cholera.
Since announcement of the quarantine, farmers, auction barn operators, veterinarians and county agents have been very cooperative in carrying out the provisions of the quarantine and are to be commended for their efforts.
With the continued cooperation of all persons involved in raising and selling hogs, hopefully the quarantine soon can be lifted.
