A Salute To Georgia Peanuts

School Lunch Program
Honors Ga.'s No. 1 Crop
Georgia's School Lunch Program is launching a salute to peanuts . . . Georgia's No. 1 crop! Special activities will salute the peanut's nutritional values and many uses, and Georgia's leadership in peanut production.
Peanut butter is a major item in the School Lunch Program. And peanut butter is the chief product made from Georgia's crop.
Georgia schools serve more than 725,000 nutritious lunches a day under the National School Lunch Act. And under the Act, Georgia schools received 511,500 pounds of peanut butter early this school year. The Government has been distributing about 15 million pounds of peanut butter a year to the nation's schools, along with other commodities.
The biggest share of this Governmentpurchased peanut butter is manufactured in Georgia. All in all, it now'takes about 500,000,000 pounds of peanuts a year to keep Americans supplied with peanut butter, through supermarkets and restaurants as well as schools.
Miss Josephine Martin, chief consultant of the Georgia School Lunch Program, is directing the salute to peanuts. Special activities will be carried out both in lunchrooms and classrooms throughout the state.
New peanut butter recipes and old favorites will be featured in lunchrooms as part of the salute. Among materials going out to schools for the salute are large posters bearing these words across the top: "A Salute to Peanuts, Georgia's No. 1 Crop!" Under this there is space for lunchroom managers to post the featured peanut butter dish of the day. Over the years, school lunch has done much to popularize use of peanut butter in soups, main dishes, vegetable sauces, salad dressings, desserts, and baked items.
Among materials prepared for classroom use is a four-page coloring book, "This is the Story of Peanuts," for second-graders. Much more detailed materials are going to higher grades.
In addition to studying nutritional benefits and varied ways of using peanut products, pupils will study the importance of peanuts to the Georgia econ-
omy. The state's 1966 crop of peanuts earn-
ed our farm families $92,208,000. Also, thousands of Georgians are employed in

plants that process peanuts and manufacture peanut products.
Peanuts have been grown in Georgia since colonial times, but the greatest strides in production were made in recent years. The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts was formed in 1961. Peanuts first became the most valuable Georgia crop in 1965.

The Social Security Administration has announced a recent change in the social security law which makes it possible for farmers and ranchers to get social security credit for up to $1600 even though they may have had a loss. For taxable years ending before 1966 the most social security credit they could receive, if they had a loss, was $1200.
It works this way. Farmers and ranchers can either report their actual net earnings or use the optional method of figuring their net earnings. If their net earnings exceed $1600 they must report the actual net earnings. If their net earnings are less than $1600 and their gross earnings exceed $600 they can get social security credit for two-thirds of their gross farm income between $600 and $2400.000. This is known as the optional method.
For example, if a farmer had gross profits of $3600 but had a net profit of $800 or even a loss, he could use the optional method to figure his social security and get credit for $1600 by reporting two-thirds of his first $2400 gross earnings. If this same farmer had net earnings of over $1600 he would have to report his actual net earnings.
Only farmers and ranchers can use this optional method. Other self-employed persons cannot get any social security credit if their net earnings are below $400 for the year. Congress made this exception because farmers' net earnings depend upon many uncontrollable factors such as prices they get for their products, crop failure due to drought and hail.
Since a person's retirement benefits or survivors benefits are determined by the amount of earnings subject to social se-

THE MARKET BULLETIN

SOCIAL SECURITY
(Continued From Page 1)
curity tax, this is an important change in the law. The monthly social security benefit rate is figured on a certain amount of yearly earnings dependent on the year of birth and death. Because of this fixed number of years used to figure benefits it is now possible for many farmers and ranchers now receiving social security

benefits to get an increase in their month-
ly rate by reporting earnings of $1600 in 1966 and later years. The $1600 year would be substituted for a lower year.
Farmers and ranchers are urged to vis-
it their nearest social security office if they desire further information. Pamphlet number OASI-25d "Special Information for Self-Employed Farmers" con-
tains a more detailed explanation. Contact your local social security office for
a free copy.
