GEORGIA STATE PARKS

By John L. Cordon, Director
Georgia Department of State Parks Growth in popularity and construction marks the progress of Georgia's state parks. Annual attendance figures have risen from 3.4 million visitors in the fiscal year 1960-61 to last year's total of 6.5 million visitors. Each year the attendance figures have set new records. New and expanded park facilities reflect the growing popularity of Georgia state parks. For the 1967-68 fiscal year, $250,000 has been appropriated to the Department of State Parks for the construction of minor facilities such as renovation of nature trails, overlooks, picnic facilities, playgrounds, extension and repair of various water systems on the state parks, pioneer camping areas, miniature golf courses, launching ramps and boat docks, and for the general upgrading of the abovementioned facilities. The 1967 General Assembly approved a third bond issue for the State Parks Department in the amount of $6.5 million for general development and construction of needed facilities throughout the state parks system. This money will be spent for 74 rental cottages, 15 comfort stations with tent camp sites, nine caretakers' residences, one superintendent's residence, one rest station (in picnic area), seven travel trailer areas with rest stations, two group camps, one group camp complex (with day use area, boating, and fishing facilities), and many other smaller projects. A portion of this bond issue will be used for the acquisition of new park sites and additional lands to supplement existing park areas. The $6.5 million bond issue will be sold in February 1968 and will be spent over a 2-year period. In addition to this bond issue, the State Parks Department has made a $250,000 capital improvement request to improve various facilities which are needed to round out the use of existing facilities on the parks. This bond issue, plus the capital improvement monies, will enable the department to continue its accelerated facilities improvement program throughout the state park system. The State Parks Department has had two previous bond issues totaling $3.8 million plus approximately $1 million from the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation under the Land and Water Funding Act. These bond issues plus the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation funds probably have enabled the State Parks Department to accelerate its construction pro-
gram by 12 to 15 years.
