Gem and Georgia Thornless--Two New Blackberries for Home Gardens
berry area of the South. The plants are vigorous and thornless with moderate resistance to anthracnose and leaf spot ting diseases. The large, oblong, dark fruit (Fig. 2) is borne in small clusters that ripen about mid-June at Experi ment. The berries are firm, of good quality, and are recommended for mak ing pies, jams, and jellies.
DISEASE AND INSECT SUSCEPTIBILITY
Both varieties may be grown for home use without a disease spray program. The insects, Pear Psylla, red spider, and red-necked cane borer attack black berry plants in the South. A spray pro gram is necessary for highest yields.
mended for home plantings. However, the Gem variety may be grown satis factorily as a commercial crop for local markets. Fruits of both varieties are good for pies, jams, and jellies, or for eating as fresh fruit. Plants are easily propagated by tip layering of the cur rent year's canes in late summer.
PERFORMANCES
Gem and Georgia Thornless were first placed in comparative yield trials at Experiment, Georgia in 1962. Yield rec ords (Table 1) were obtained for a period of four years, 1963-66.
CONCLUSION The two blackberries 1 are recom-

ADAPTABILITY
Plants of Georgia Thornless are more susceptible to cold injury than are plants of Gem or Flint varieties. Therefore, this new thornless variety is recommended for the lower half of the blackberry belt. Temperatures below 12F. usually cause damage to plants of Georgia Thornless. The Gem blackberry may be grown suc cessfully in most blackberry areas of the Southeast.
