Certified Livestock Market

Livestock Transactions Reported

'66 Study Reveals Volume,
Value In All Channells
The volume of livestock transactions by species is an important measure of the commerce in the productive sale of live stock. The Certified Livestock Markets Association has had this information com piled for the year 1966 through an inde pendent research study conducted by Agri Research, Inc. A similar study was done for the years 1961 and 1965.
This summary of the study is made available to schools of Agriculture, related industry organizations, and to the public upon request.
The study provides volume information on cattle transactions, hog transactions, sheep transactions, and total livestock transactions. The information is in num bers of head and in dollar value.
The volume of livestock transactions is divided between that of all competitive livestock markets and that of non-market channels. Comparisons on a number of head basis for the years 1965 and 1966 are included.
In order to relate the information in greater detail, the United States has been divided into seven regions and the totals of each are shown. Definitions of terms used in the study follow.

Competitive Livestock Market
A common term, growing in use, which is applied to public markets, both auction and central. Sales transactions are con summated on the basis of competitive bidding on price, either by auction or pri vate treaty, as opposed to the non-com petitive nature of direct sale or nonmarket transactions.
Livestock Sales Transactions
The number of head of livestock where effective title transfer occurs in the mar keting process. Animals that are sold more than once during the current year's production and marketing process are in cluded as more than one transaction, or may appear as a transaction in a subse quent year if marketed at a later date.
Competitive Livestock Market Sales Transactions
All sales through competitive livestock markets providing selling services on a commission basis, operated by single or multiple management groups.
Non-Market Sales Transactions (Direct Sales)
All sales consummated outside the above defined competitive livestock mar ket channels, such as direct sales between ranchers or farmers, farmer to packer, farmer to feeder, feeders to packers, etc.
