Increased Storage Needed For Corn, Soybeans In S.E.

ASCS, USDA Report
Facilities Lacking
By PHIL CAMPBELL Commissioner of Agriculture
Reports received by the Georgia Department of Agriculture from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in Washington and from the U.S.D.A. crop reporting service indicate that storage facilities available in the Southeast are not currently sufficient to accommodate this year's expected corn and soybean crops.
As a result of these reports, farmers and buyers need to be aware of the possible shortage of storage space and begin now to make plans if they intend to store any of their corn and soybean crops.
The reports indicate that additional storage space needs to be converted to be suitable for corn and soybeans or needs to be constructed.
In addition, any farmer or buyer planning to transport corn and soybeans should go ahead now and make the necessary arrangements as the Southeast as a whole is faced with a shortage of suitable storage.
For further information and a list of state licensed warehousemen in your area, contact the local ASCS office in your county.
Attention Cotton Growers,
Ginners, Buyers
A special representative from U.S.D.A. will be in Macon, Thursday, August 24, for a special meeting to discuss the type of allotment and support program for cotton for 1968. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in the Walter Little room of the Dempsey Hotel. All interested persons are invited to attend and express their views, according to the State A.S.C.S. office.

Smallest Since 1921
U.S. Cotton Crop Estimated
8.3 Million Bales For 1967
The 1967 U. S. cotton crop is now estimated at 8.3 million bales by the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Crop Reporting Board.
This figure for the total national cotton crop is down 13 per cent from the 9.6 million total bales last year, 45 per cent below the 1961-65 average of 14.9 million bales, and is the smallest cotton crop since 1921.
The reasons for the decline include more acreage diversion, one of the worst planting seasons on record, and greater weevil damage. Total plantings were limited to 9.7 million acres, but abandonment is estimated at 12.1 per cent, compared to 7.7 per cent last year and the 5-year average of 4.7 per cent.
Thus, only 8.5 million acres are left for harvest, the lowest since 1871. This year's indicated yield for the nation, at 468 pounds per acre, is the lowest in 5 years. Yield averaged 480 pounds last year, and 491 pounds per acre during 1961-65. (USDA Farm Paper Letter)
