HELP CONTROL HOUSE FLIES
By Maxey P. Nolan, Jr., Entomologist Cooperative Extension Service
House flies have been associated with man for many years. They can be extremely annoying. More important, house flies carry disease. For these reasons, house flies constitute a public health hazard, and must be controlled. Everyone must do his part.
In warm weather house flies become active. After mating, female house flies lay eggs on manure, sewage, garbage, feed, dead animals and other decaying organic materials. Each female will lay about 500 eggs in two to seven batches. After incubating for six to 30 hours, the eggs hatch into tiny, squirming, worm-like, maggots. The maggots feed and grow and after four to 14 days transform into a resting or pupal stage in dried parts of the breeding material. In the pupal stage, lasting from two to 10 days, the worm-like maggot transforms into a full grown, twowinged, house fly.
Methods Of Control A successful fly control program must be directed toward "breaking" the life cycle of the house fly by one or more of the following methods: 1. Disposal of all fly breeding materials wherever possible to prevent deposition of eggs and to remove the food in which fly larvae develop. Strict sanitation is a most important practice in an effective fly control program. 2. Where removal of fly breeding material, such as manure, is not possible, the treatment of this material with an approved, effective larvicide to prevent larval development is necessary. 3. Supplement your basic sanitation program with the use of insecticides aimed at controlling adult house flies. The correct use of approved insecticidal baits, space sprays and residual sprays and strips provide excellent adult fly control. 4. Use screens wherever possible. Screen doors should open to the outside and screen in windows and doors should be in good repair. Everyone must control house flies on his premises. Housewives should either wrap garbage in paper before storage in fly-tight garbage cans, or dispose of
it in an electric disposal unit, or bury it at least 18 inches deep. Garbage collections should be made bi-weekly, if possible. After collection, garbage cans should be rinsed with a hose and allowed to dry before re-use.
Inspections Important City dumps should be inspected periodically to insure adequate fly control. Gardeners should inspect compost piles, piles of debris and discarded piles of fruits and vegetables for possible house fly breeding. Livestock producers should inspect manure accumulations and other possible fly breeding places around their farm to insure a fly free operation. You can control house flies by following sanitary practices, screening doors and windows, and applying proper insecticides. Only by the concerted effort of conscientious Georgians will the house fly problem be solved. For specific information regarding fly control on your premises contact your county agent.
GEORGIA'S FORESTS
Forestry and forest products in Georgia are the second largest industry in the state exceeded only by textiles. The annual value of forest products is more than one billion dollars, according to foresters with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
The total area of Georgia is 37.7 million acres. About 70 per cent or 25.8 million acres of the state is in forests.
The U. S. Forest Service reports that Georgia is currently growing more timber each year than any other state except the state of Washington.
FROZEN MELON
Ever thought about freezing watermelon in small portions for use later in fruit cocktail? Extension home economists at the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service point out that you should package these portions in moisture-vapor-proof containers and quick freeze at zero degrees.
