___ NUMBER 3
PEANUT STUNT DISEASE
The peanut is Georgia's number one cash crop. Cash farm income for farmers from peanuts exceeded 100 million dollars in 1965 and was more than 90 million in .1966. Peanut stunt disease has been known to damage or ruin 95 per cent of an individual crop. Because of danger to the 100 million dollar peanut crop, it has become necessary to quarantine seed peanuts from North Carolina and Virginia where the disease has been found. The seed peanut that is quarantined accounts for about 3 percent of the total peanut crop. Peanut stunt could cost us our entire peanut crop if allowed to infest our state. In addition, it spreads easily to beans and other crops. Due to careful inspection, quarantine and certification practices, THERE IS NO KNOWN PEANUT STUNT ON GEORGIA FARMS.
BLACK SHANK Tobacco Ailment
Black shank is a problem disease known to all tobacco farmers. It has spread rapidly in the flue cured tobacco belt. In North Carolina and Virginia, tobacco farmers have had to stop planting the old varieties of tobacco and have had to start growing varieties that are resistant to black shank disease.
SCREW WORM Livestock Ailment
Screwworms were a great menace to livestock and wildlife in Georgia for many years. They cost livestock producers in Georgia millions of dollars and played havoc with our wildlife reserves after being introduced from the south. All cattle farmers south of the mountains know of its devastation. Today, after much research and great expense on the part of state and federal agricultural agencies, the screwworm has been eradicated from Georgia.
CHOLERA Hog Ailment
Cholera has been estimated to cost Georgia hog farmers more than three million dollars annually at its height. For several years now we have waged a war against hog cholera and finally have this deadly and costly disease under control - almost eradicated.
FIRE ANTS People Ailment (mostly)
Fire ant infestations have plagued Georgia livestock farmers, crop farmers, and even urban citizens for several years. The imported fire ant, which originally entered this country at Mobile, has an infectious sting and builds huge mounds making the land untenable for livestock or humans. Many citizens, including small children, have required medical attention after being stung. The state and federal governments are now expending large amounts of money to eradicate this dangerous pest from Georgia.
