SHADE TURF
It is usually difficult to maintain a dense turf in heavily shaded areas. Extension Service horticulturists offer some pointers to obtain better results under these conditions. First, select a shade tolerant grass such as fescue, St. Augustine or Zoysia. Second, be sure not to mow the grass as closely in the shaded area as compared to sunny exposures.

Watermelon Week
This week, July 3-9, has been proclaimed "Watermelon Week" in honor of Georgia's number one fruit crop.
Festivities began on June 30 at Cordele with the crowning of the 1967 Georgia Watermelon Queen. The Festival will continue through July 8 with free slices of watermelon for all visitors in the Cordele area.
Watermelon Day at the Atlanta State Farmer's Market will climax the week on Sunday afternoon July 9. Events will include a "Biggest Melon" contest offering $100 prize to the contestant with the heaviest watermelon.
In addition there will be a watermelon eating contest for children ages 5-10, a "Beat the Band" contest, and a free slice of watermelon for every person attending. Come and bring your family.
SAVING WATER
Few gardening practices give the returns as does the practice of mulching shrubs. The greatest benefit of mulching is the conservation of soil moisture, according to Gerald E. Smith, Extension Service horticulturist. Watering plants can be an expensive practice. However, mulching materials will do a good job of conserving the water that is added.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT REDUCE SICKNESS LOSS
In cooperative participation with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, eight diagnostic laboratory centers are maintained to aid farmers in the prevention and treatment of disease in poultry and livestock. Poultry farmers may bring sick birds to the nearest poultry lab, which the Georgia Poultry Improvement Association operates by contract. The livestock labs check animals with a veterinarian's reference.
