NUMBER 23

1967 RED MEAT WEIGHTS
COMPARED TO YEAR AGO
Federally inspected slaughter of beef cattle was estimated at 541,000 head during the week ended May 20. That's up 3 percent from the corresponding week a year earlier. But, beef production for the week, at 329.5 million Ibs., was up 6 percent. The reason for the increase: Live cattle weights averaged 1,050 Ibs., compared to 1,032 Ibs. a year earlier; dressed weights averaged 609 Ibs., compared to 589 Ibs. a year earlier.
The situation was reversed in the matter of calf slaughter. Estimated at 65,000 head for the week, calf slaughter was down 14 percent from a year earlier. But, veal production, at 7.0 million Ibs., was down 20 percent from a year earlier. The reason: Live weights of calves and vealers averaged 195 Ibs., compared to 211 Ibs. a year earlier; dressed weights averaged 108 Ibs., compared to 116 Ibs. a year earlier.
There was still another twist in the hog - pork totals. At 1,133,000 head, hog slaughter was down 2 percent from a year earlier, but pork production at 176.7 million Ibs., was down only 1 percent from a year earlier. The reason: Though live weights of hogs averaged 249 Ibs., compared to 251 Ibs. a year earlier, dressed weights averaged 156 Ibs., compared to 155 Ibs. a year earlier. (Livestock Market News).
TRACTORS AND BAILERS
INCREASE ON FARMS
There were 15 percent fewer farms reported in the U. S. in the 1964 census than in 1959. But, while the number of cornpickers and combines had each declined 13 percent, there were only 1 percent fewer automobiles on farms and 1 percent fewer hay conditions. Moreover, there were more tractors, trucks, pickup balers, field forage harvesters and crop driers in 1964, according to a publication issued by USDA's Economic Research Service last week.
Tractor numbers, at 4.8 million, were up 2 percent; truck numbers, at 3.0 million, were up 7 percent in 1964. The number of pickup balers, at 751,150, was up 10 percent; forage harvesters, at 315,748, were up 8.5 percent; and the number of crop driers, at 76,210, was up 50 percent in 1964.

Dr. C. C. Murray, dean and coordinator
of the College of Agriculture, University
of Georgia, recently compared modern agriculture to a jet bomber.
"It takes only a few men to make up the jet crew," he said, "but it takes dozens of specialists and mechanics and hundreds of factory workers to keep each plane in the sky. The same is true of modern farming and agribusiness, and will be even more true in the years
ahead." Dr. Murray continued, "There is a ten-
dency for some people to believe that, because machines are replacing more and more men on the farms and ranches, fewer and fewer opportunities are available in agriculture.
"This simply is not so," he declared. The College of Agriculture leader announced publication of a new brochure that "corrects many commonly-held misconceptions about agricultural careers." Entitled "Rewarding Careers in a Dynamic Industry," the publication "tells in vivid words and pictures the truth about expanding opportunities in agriculture," according to Dr. Murray. He said opportunities for profitable and satisfying careers actually are increasing at the same rate machines take over the menial chores on the farm. "As the agricultural world grows more and more complex, more and more highly trained people are needed to successfully cope with the new realities," he added. "Our main reason for circulating the new brochure," according to Dr. Murray, "is to attract more of our best young men and women to agricultural careers. Not enough of these people are beingtrained to fill all of the satisfying, wellpaying jobs that are being created by technological change." "Rewarding Careers in a Dynamic Industry" was prepared for nation-wide distribution by,a national committee representing Land-Grant Colleges and State Universities. Copies are being made available to county Extension Service agents, teachers of vocational agriculture, and high school and junior college guidance counselors.
