STONE MT. CARVING GROWS

WORK ON HUGE CARILLON
MOVES FORWARD RAPIDLY
By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture
Chairman, Stone Mountain Memorial Ass'n.
More than a million people visited Stone Mountain Park during 1965 and half again as many people are expected to visit this year as the development of Stone Mountain continues to progress.
The top attraction, of course, continues to be work on the world's largest carving - - - the historic and fabled figures of General Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and "Stonewall" Jackson - - - which are being carved out of the solid granite some 30 stories above the ground.
Another top attraction upon which work is progressing rapidly is that of the

world's largest Carillon Tower which is scheduled for completion this fall. The tower of bells is a gift of the Coca-Cola Company and was a focal point of interest at the recent New York World's Fair. When completed the Carillon will be used for the production of special Carillon concerts which are expected to be a major Park attraction.
In addition to other attractions which have offered varied educational enter-
tainment for several years now there are
several new attractions designed to in-
terest visitors of every age.
One of the newest in the park is the grist mill area. The mill is almost ready to grind corn, and for many urban youngsters it will be a "first" time to see a mill in action.
The large overshot mill-wheel will be a popular picture spot, both for movies

and still pictures. Meal, ground at the mill, will be sold to the public. For many people, it will be a nostalgic reminder of other days.
Near the grist mill is a sorghum mill, which will be operated with a white mule. The syrup will be cooked in an old time iron pot, and will be sold in attractive glass jars.
Another favorite picture spot at the park is the old covered bridge which leads from the mainland to an island in Stone Mountain Lake. The bridge, which dates from about 1850, was brought to Stone Mountain Park from a crossing over the Oconee River in Athens. The sides of the bridge are open and form a diamond pattern, which adds both to the beauty of the bridge and to its attractiveness as a photographic subject.
Picnic tables dot the park in many areas. Most of the tables are nestled in shaded groves, while a few boldly sit on the open slopes of the mountain. Camping sites are plentiful at the camp grounds, and fishing is good in all three of the Park's lakes. Nature trails are being developed, and hikers will be able to choose trails of several different lengths.
Special exhibits attract many visitors. The Confederate Museum in Memorial Hall is very popular and consistently draws praise from visitors who come from all parts of the country. The Battlarena in Confederate Hall, the Flag Terrace, and the many beautifully maintained flower beds provide visitors additional attractions to enjoy.
Recreation is available in many forms. The Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad features a brand new show this year. Passengers see and learn about the "Great Locomotive Chase," one of America's great railroad epics.
Landlubbers and sailors enjoy a cruise on the Robert E. Lee, a faithful reproduction of old-time riverboats. The Skylift to the top of the mountain gives a spectacular panoramic view of Stone Mountain, the carving, and the park itself.
Children of all ages enjoy walking through the game ranch where tamed animals come up to be petted and fed.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

MAY 25, 1966

The Antique Auto and Music Museum features many famous automobiles of yester-year, including several "one-of-akind", such as a special car built for the
famous General "Billy" Mitchell.

The South, as of the 1850's, really
comes alive at Stone Mountain Plantation. Eighteen buildings create a picture of how Southerners lived more than a
century ago.

As progress continues on the development of Stone Mountain, it is certain to become ever more important as a major Georgia tourist attraction as well as a focal point of interest for all Georgians.
