HOG CHOLERA SEASON

PORK PRICES GOOD;
PROTECT YOUR HERD
April, May and June have always been the most dangerous months for hog cholera outbreaks and infestation. These months have become known as the hog cholera season.
This year, the Georgia Department of Agriculture is hopeful and optimis tic that GEORGIA WILL NOT HAVE A HOG CHOLERA SEASON. This can be accomplished with the help of all Georgia hog farmers.
So far this year, Georgia has an ex cellent record. There were only four cases of cholera reported in January,

three in February and none to date in March.
This is a good indication that chol era incidents can be kept at a mini mum. Department personnel are work ing around the clock with veterinarians, county agents and farmers to maintain this level.
However, extra alertness is requir ed on the part of the farmer as this is naturally one of the busiest times of the year on the farm. But with hog prices up, farmers cannot afford to neglect their herd.
Hogs should be checked regularly and often for any sign of sickness.
If there is any sign of illness, con

tact your veterinarian immediately. With hog prices as high as they are now, extra precautions can be justi fied.
Vaccinate and isolate any new ad ditions to your herd, regardless of where you purchased them and remem ber to always watch your herd carefully for any sign of sickness.
Report any illness to your veterinar ian or county agent.
Vaccinate your hogs against pos sible infection.
If we can eliminate the hog chol era season in Georgia this year, it will mean money in your pocket now and for years to come.
