SCALE CHECKS SAVE YOU MONEY

USE OF DIELDRIN
AND ALDRIN LIMITED
The U. S. Department of Agriculture said today that it is cancelling registration of the insecticides aldrin and dieldrin for use on certain vegetable, grain, and forage crops.
USDA's action is based on recent scientific data proving that aldrin and dieldrin use on some of the crops can result in illegal residues on the crops.
Cancellation is effective 30 days after registrants of aldrin and dieldrin products receive USDA notification.
This latest tightening of pesticide registration requirements reflects a trend originating in improved residue-detection procedures. The new analytical procedures are far more sensitive than those available when residue tolerances and "no residue" registrations were originally accepted for pesticides containing aldrin and dieldrin, USDA officials said.
LIST OF CROPS AFFECTED
Use of aldrin as a foliage treatment on corn, and all uses of aldrin other than seed treatment will be cancelled for use on the following 25 crops:
Alfalfa, birdsfoot trefoil, clover, collards, cowpeas, endive, grass, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, lespedeza, millet, milo, mustard greens, parsnips, pasture grass, peas, rice, salsify, small grains (including barley, oats, rye, and wheat), soybeans, spinach, sugar beets, swiss chard, vetch.

Use of dieldrin, other than seed treatment, will be cancelled for use on the following 23 crops:
Celery, collards, cowpeas, corn, endive, grass, kale, kohlrabi, lespedeza, millet, milo, mustard greens, pasture grass, peas, rice, salsify, small grains (including barley, oats, rye, and wheat), sorghum, soybeans, spinach, swiss chard, turnips, vetch.
NOTICE!
PEANUT SEED
QUARANTINE
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has placed a quarantine on all North Carolina and Virginia peanut seed.
A highly infectious virus known as peanut stunt disease has been found in these two states, causing the quarantine.
The quarantine prohibits ANYONE, FARMER OR DEALER, from bringing peanut seed into Georgia grown in North Carolina or Virginia.
Peanut stunt disease has been known to damage or ruin 95 percent of an individual crop.
The disease causes dwarfing and even death of plants and is transmissable to beans and other crops.

V/EIGHTS AND MEASURES WEEK, MARCH 1-7
March 1 through 7 is observed in Georgia and throughout the nation as "Weights and Measures" week. The Georgia Department of Agriculture Weights and Measures division is cooperating in this observance.
Last year, 33,816 scales were inspected for accuracy by the Department. Of these, only 1,143 were found in error. Checking of these scales and their subsequent correction amounted to an approximate $176,017.18 savings to the housewife or consumer and $94,397.72 savings to the merchant.
These figures prove that all scale errors are not in the merchant^ favor. In fact, Department Inspectors report that most merchants are glad to see them coming as their inspection is a protection to them as well as the consumer. In addition, it prevents unscrupulous merchants from advertising goods at a non- competitive low price and making up the difference in short weights.
Milk tanks checked resulted in a savings of $6,718 to the farmer and $2,754 savings to the plant. Here again, the farmer, or the seller, was saved more than the purchaser.
Housewives are often inclined to worry about pre-packaged foods. Of the total $176,017 savings to the consumer during the past fiscal year, only about $6,000 of this was a result of errors in pre-packaged weights.
In addition to the various types of scales checked by the Weights and Measures Division, tobacco trucks, feed bags, fertilizer, seed bags, bulk loads of feed and seed, coal and logs are also checked by the Department inspectors.
