RYE, OATS GOOD WINTER COVER

Research Shows Small Grains
Sound For Winter Grazing
TIFTON, Oct. 8 Results of recent research with small grains at the Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station here show that both rye and oats have important places in a sound winter grazing program for cattle in the Georgia Coastal Plain.
Tests conducted by Richard H. Hart, Glenn W. Burton, and Darrell D. Morey show how the two species of small grains can be used to supplement each other as forage producers throughout the winter months. These findings are reported in a new publication of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations, Bulletin N.S. 121, "Small Grain Varieties for Winter Forage in the Georgia Coastal Plain."
Rye, because 01 its greater drought and cold tolerance, ordinarily will be ready for grazing several weeks before oats and is the best species for mid-winter grazing. Oats, on the other hand, produce more forage than rye after temperatures start to rise in the spring and may produce higher quality forage. Therefore, oats should be planted for use in the latter half of the winter-grazing season.
The research scientists pointed out that planting both oats and rye also reduces the risk of loss from disease. If all pastures are in a single species, they explained, any diseases which occur are certain to attack the entire area.
The best oat varieties for grazing, according to these tests, are Fairfax, Moregrain, Suregrain, and Red Rustproof. The best rye varieties in order of increasing cold tolerance and earliness are Wrens Abruzzi and Explorer.
Fairfax oats proved to be the best small grain to plant for silage. The scientists said that Wrens Abruzzi and Explorer ryes are the best combination for early grazing and silage.

Cutting Stalks
Does Not Affect
Yield Of Corn
Results of recent research show that corn stover stalks may be harvested at maturity without causing any loss in the corn grain or stover produced.
In tests conducted over a period of eight years at the Southern Piedmont Soil Conservation Field Station at Watkinsville, returning corn stover to the soil each year did not increase either grain or stalk yields over harvesting the stover.
In comparable treatments where no nitrogen was applied, corn grain yields averaged 50 bushels per acre whether stover was removed by harvesting or not. And where stover was returned,- stover production averaged 3,254 pounds per acre compared to 3,185 pounds per acre where it was harvested.
The experiment was conducted by W. E. Adams and Ri. N. Dawson, USDA research soils scientist and research technician respectively at Watkinsville, and E. R. Beaty, associate agronomist of the College and Branch experiment stations at Athens.
Best adapted corn hybrids were planted in 42-inch rows and thinned to a stand of 10,000 plants per acre. The stover harvested was cut with a silage harvester after the mature ears of corn had been harvested.
Adams and Beaty pointed out that results of these tests can be of significant value to Georgia' farmers as corn stover has high nutritional value as cattle feed when properly prepared for storage. Experiments are now underway to determine the best way to preserve such storage, either by pelleting or other means.
Grain to stover ratios in these tests ranged from .61 to 1.18 pounds of grain per pound of stover. During the eight years year-to-year variations in grain production were much 'greater than those in stover production. Grain production varied 350 percent, ranging from 31.5 bushels per acre in 1957 to 109.7 bushels per acre in 1961. On the other hand, stover production varied only 177 percent, from 2,904 pounds per acre in 1956 to 5,190 pounds per acre in 1961.
