FARM RECREATION IN GEORGIA
Opportunities Available
To Georgia Farmers
By CECIL D. CHAPMAN
State Conservationisi
Privately owned land in Georgia offers virtually unlimited opportunities for recreational development. Each year more and more residents of our rapidly expanding metropolitan areas are heading for the .country for a bit of recreation and relaxation. And they're willing to pay for the privilege.
State and Federal ptiblic recreation areas are overcrowded and heavily used. Despite the fine efforts of public officials to provide the best recreation facilities possible for Georgians and out-of-state vacationers, there isn't enough to go around. Too, all predictions point to an ever-increasing demand in the years ahead.
Much of this growing demand for outdoor recreation can be met by local people as they develop conservation plans on individual farms and in the small watershed projects of the State.
Over 30,000 ponds have been constructed by Georgia landowners with assistance from the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Nearly 25,000 have been stocked according to the specifications of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Georgia Game and Fish Commission. Nearly 9,000 are open to the public for fishing. Over 2,000 have additional recreational facilities.
In the small upstream watershed projects in Georgia local people are cooperating with the Soil Conservation Service to provide recreational facilities wherever possible. So far 163 flood prevention structures have been built as a part of the watershed protection and flood prevention program. One hundred forty-two of these structures created reservoirs which have been stocked with fish. The public has access to sixtythree of these.
In Muscogee and Harris Counties a new recreation development is underway in the Bull Creek Watershed project. This will bring water-based recreation closer to several hundred thousand people. One of the eight parks planned will be 140 acres in size and include a 40-acre lake. A complete recreation plan has been developed by the sponsors; the Pine Mountain Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Muscogee County Board of Commissioners.
The Marbury Creek Watershed project near Winder, Georgia, is another excellent example of combining recreational development with watershed protection and flood control.
A complete recreational development is now under construction around a 266-acre reservoir created by a flood prevention dam in Fort Yargo State Park. Included will be swimming beaches, picnic and camping areas, cottages for rent, and b6at launching ramps. Another use of the reservoir is to provide additional water supply for nearby Winder, Georgia.
Development of the Marbury project has been a truly cooperative effort between local, State, and Federal groups. Sponsors include the Oconee Eiver Soil and Water Conservation District, Barrow County Commissioners, Winder City Council, and the Georgia Department of State Parks.
Georgia landowners have done much to provide additional recreational facilities for the public. Most realize, though, that the door has only been opened. Countless opportunities lie ahead.

Storing Pesticides
With harvest time approaching the use of pesticides is diminishing, and pesticide dealers and farmers will soon store their hold-over pesticides for the winter. Pesticides should be stored so that they will not contaminate food, feed, or fertilizer.
Many dealers have customers with pesticides thai they intend to carry over till next year. These customers should be cautioned in the safe storage of such material. Dealers should impress upon the customer thai pesticides are toxic substances and that special care should be exercised in handling and storing them. If a farmer has a product from which the label has been lost or one in a container other than its original container, he should destroy it. Never keep a pesticide that does not have a complete, clearly legibile label attached.
The following are some suggestions for safe storage:
1. Be sure thai caps are tightened securely on all bottles and cans. Destroy leaky containers.
2. Do not store weed killers close to such materials as wettable powders and dust. Some weed killers, such as 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T are highly volatile substances and can contaminate other materials.
3. Store wettable powders, dusts, and granules of pesticide products in a cool dry place.
4. Do not store liquid pesticides in a place where the temperature will fall below 40* F. Too low temperature may result in a breakdown of liquid material, and, if the liquid should freeze, there is the danger thai glass containers will break.
5. Do not carry over any pesticide products whose labels have been lost or are not complete and legible.
6. Above alL keep pesticide materials in a locked room or cabinet and out of the reach of children and animals.
