Hog Cholera Warning
By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture
Hog cholera season has struck a hard and costly blow to Georgia hog farmers.
Each year the warm months of May, June, July and August cause an increase in outbreaks of hog cholera. This year the hog cholera season has started early and hard.
IT IS UP TO THE HOG FARMERS OF GEORGIA TO STOP THESE OUTBREAKS NOW AND CUT HOG CHOLERA SEASON SHORT!
Georgia has had excellent success during the last few years in holding down the incidence of cholera. But without the complete cooperation of hog owners, cholera will again become a serious problem in Georgia.
Recent outbreaks in the Bulloch and Coffee county areas have been extremely heavy and costly. This is due primarily to the thoughtless acts of four or five farmers who after suspecting cholera in their herds have taken them to market where many other herds were exposed and in-
fected. In an effort to bring these outbreaks under control, use of modified live virus is being permitted throughout the state effective immediately.
Cholera is a HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS disease. The cholera virus can live in the air. It can live on a truck or in a sales barn for days. THEREFORE FARMERS MUST KEEP THESE SICK HOGS OUT OF THE STOCKYARDS. CHOLERA MUST BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELY. THE STATE WILL PAY MARKET VALUE FOR CHOLERA DEATHS WHEN REPORTED.
Georgia has come a long way in the eradication of hog cholera. Now is a crucial time in the war to completely rid Georgia of a disease costing three million dollars annually.
