CHOLERA OUTBREAK STOPPED

By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture
The recent hog cholera outbreak in southeast Georgia is under control.
During March only five cases of hog cholera were reported throughout the state as compared to 16 in February, 28 in January and 25 in December.
The commissioner stated that this small number of outbreaks is sufficient evidence to prove the safety of using killed virus vaccine on the farms and anti-hog cholera serum at the sales barns. The use of the two protectives became mandatory under Department of Agriculture regulations October 1, 1964.

Many farmers and professional agricultural workers had been afraid that the changeover to the different vaccine caused the three-month outbreak.
The change to killed virus vaccine from a modified live virus vaccine was thought necessary by the Agriculture Department to enter the final phases of the hog cholera eradication program in the state.
Agriculture Department officials point to a two year cholera eradication program in Lowndes County which ended last June, to emphasize the importance of killed virus vaccine. Treating more than 20,000 hogs each year with killed virus vaccine only, cholera was wiped out within the county

and none has been reported since.
The recent outbreak, department offici als say, was caused by three farmers ir Coffee, Tift and Wayne counties carrying hogs to market from cholera infestea farms. State law requires that farmers re port sick hogs to their veterinarian, county agent, or Department of Agriculture officials, and that the hogs not be moved from the premises.
The Agriculture Department warns the farmers to continue the treatment of their hogs and to report any evidence of cholera because the state is very close to the final eradication of this disease.
