MARCH IS EGG MONTH

March is National Egg Month, and nowwhere will it be observed with more enthusiasm than in Georgia.
This state, according to R. A. Gayvert, poultry marketing specialist with the Cooperative Extension Service, realized a gross income of approximately $115 million
from eggs last year. Production in 1964 was about eight percent above 1963.
Today, Mr. Gayvert continued, only California outranks Georgia in egg income.
And no state has progressed faster. As recently as 1958, Georgia was an egg-deficit state and had to import eggs from the inidwest to supply local needs. Now, how-

ever, Georgia not only supplies its own needs, but ships better than 50 percent of
its eggs to other areas. No longer a sideline here, egg produc-
tion has become big business requiring a
large capital investment. The average size of commercial flocks in Georgia is about 10,000 birds, according to Mr. Gayvert. Several enterprises have as many as 200,-
000 to 500,000. As far as income is concerned, the egg
industry is now the second most important agricultural business in the state. Only broilers generate more cash receipts.
National Egg Month is held each year

as a means of saluting the egg industry and to give consumers ideas on ways eggs can be used in meal preparation. This year marks the 12th annual observance.
Because of the efficiency of egg producers, Mr. Gayvert said, homemakers have an almost unlimited supply of a product unique among foods. Not only do eggs have a delicate flavor and high nutritional value, but they can be prepared easily in many different ways for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and in-between snacks.
Mr. Gayvert said high-quality eggs will be in plentiful supply this spring, and that
they will carry attractive price tags.
