Georgia Takes Giant Step In Cholera Eradication
KILLED VIRUS VACCINE TO BE USED, OCTOBER 1
By Phil Campbell
Commissioner of Agriculture
There are three types of vaccine used in the protection of hogs against cholera: a live virus, a modified live virus with serum, and a killed vi rus.
When cholera was rampant in Georgia sev eral years ago, the live virus was used to protect hogs from cholera even though (as in most hu man vaccinations) there was a chance of infect ing the hogs with the vaccine. However, the dis ease was so prevalent at this time that the chance was the lesser of evils, as the live vaccine was the only one to offer sufficient protection where prob ability of exposure was so great.
Later in our state's war on cholera, a modi fied live virus with anti-hog cholera serum was recommended as there is less danger of perpetu ating the disease with this vaccination than with the live virus.
tion program, only 138 herds in Georgia reported cholera.
It is because of this success that we are now in a position to recommend use of the killed virus (crystal violet) vaccine in the protection of hogs against cholera.
There is no danger of perpetuating hog chol era with the use of the killed virus vaccine. In addition, hog producers will find this method of protection less expensive.
AS OF OCTOBER 1, 1964, KILLED VIRUS VACCINE ONLY WILL BE ALLOWED FOR USE IN PROTECTING HOGS FROM CHOLERA.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture is happy to make this announcement and feels that this is another giant step in the complete eradica tion of hog cholera from Georgia.
State Veterinarian, 0. D. Dye, stated that this step forward in the eradication of cholera means that the wind-up of the cholera eradication pro gram is not too far off. Hog producers have co operated wonderfully with the department in this effort, and it is hoped that soon they will never have to worry about cholera infection again.
In 1961, the year before Georgia began her all - out effort to completely eradicate cholera once and for all, 1,100 herds were reported to be infected with cholera:
In 1963, after one year of the cholera eradica
The restriction against the use of modified live virus will not hold true where interstate reg ulations apply. Feeder pigs going from Georgia to any other state must be vaccinated with the modified live virus and serum due to Federal reg ulations.
REMEMBER, AS OF OCTOBER 1, KILLED VIRUS VACCINE ONLY MAY BE USED
IN GEORGIA AS PROTECTION AGAINST HOG CHOLERA.
