OUR STATE
NUMBER 52
The future economy of the United States
going to be charted on the leisure time
her than on the working time of its citizens.
uring the past half century the United
es has experienced blessings that could be
undoing. Her population has expanded,
people are living longer and healthier lives
her industry and farming have become so
cient and mechanized that she requires few-
people for the production of the necessity
as for living.
is has led the nation from a 70 hour
king week to what is known as the 40 hour
ng less than 40 hours. The future certainly
week with most offices in big cities
indicates that it won't be long before we will.
have what is commonly known as a 30 hour
work week.
Continuing on this trend, we can easily
see how the off hours or leisure time of the
people of this nation is going to affect the
economy of our nation.
Georgia must, therefore, develop her
naiural resources if she intends to survive in -
the struggle that is developing to attract man
during his surplus time when he spends his
surplus money.
The continued development of Georgia's
agriculture and of Georgia's industry will not
sufficiently give to Georgia her share of the
national economy. Tourism must also be de-
veloped for Georgia's tourists and for those
out of state whom we would like fo visit
Georgia because of their spare time and
their spare dollars.
There are many places in Georgia that
could compete favorably with other places in
the nation if they were properly developed for
fourists.
The following article is the seventh mm a
series about Georgia's natural resources that
are being or should be developed into recre-
ational areas ond tourist attractions.

relics dating back as far as 5000 BC.,

of how these early settlers of Georgia
lived. A fine beach on the lake and a
boat ramp offer an opportunity for wa-

South beard State Parks
(Continued From Page 1)
picnicking or family camping in tent or
trailer.
Seminole State Park, in the far south-
west corner 12 miles out of Donalsonville,
is located on the Jim Woodruff Reservoir
and provides excellent swimming, fish-
ing, and boating, as well as a pleasant
camp site area.
In the central area of the state are
Little Ocmulgee at McRae and Jefferson
Davis Memorial Park at Irwinville. Of
the two, Little Ocmulgee is the one that
offers complete park facilities. A large
lake affords an excellent beach for swim-
ming, boating and fishing. There is a
rustic lodge, comfortable vacation cabins,
and a family camping area. Also provid-
ed are Scout camping huts for an orga-
nized vacation program.
Jefferson Davis State
tained as a memorial to the former Presi-
dent of the Confederacy and an interest-
ing feature of the park is the Confederate
Museum with many fine exhibits of the
War. Pleasant picnic areas are scattered
through the grounds.
Down the eastern section, there are
several very fine State Parks, notable for
sports.
Park is main-
Magnolia Solitee near Millen, i ies
esting as the site of the largest Confed- _
erate Prison Camp, ruins of which may
be seen. There is also a very fine aqua-
rium. The park is open year round and
there are tent and trailer sites for camp-
ers. A swimming pool, casino restaurant,
playground, and several secluded picnic
areas provide recreation for visitors of
all ages. Two fishing lakes and a boat
rental insure good fishing
In the southeast corner of Georgia are
three State Parks which attract many
visitors. Laura S. Walker at Waycross
has lake fishing and boating, a new swim-
ming pool, and a large family camping
area. Picnic areas are provided and a
group camp has accommodations for 150
persons at one time. Being on the edge of
the Okefenokee Swamp, this
tracts many visitors to this famous area.
To really get a first hand view of the
great swamp, Siephen C. Foster State
Park at Fargo is the best vantage point.
Being in the swamp, it can be reached
only from Fargo, but the visitor is well
rewarded for the round-about trip. There
are overnight cabins and a restaurant.
The camping area is limited but there are
