_ The milk produced by the nations dairy farmers hag
far-reaching economic effects upon scores of industries
directly or indirectly connected with the dairy industry.
The dairy industry supplies 28 percent of the nations
food for 19 cents of every dollar. It consists of one-fifth
of the total agricultural field. More than 10 billion dol-
lars worth of dairy products are sold each year.
Throughout the United States, according to the latest
Census of Manufacturers, 5,157 companies in the fluid
milk business employed more than 200,000 people.
These workers need equipment and transportation.
The dairy industry utilized some 400,000 vehicles
to transport milk and dairy products.
Processing plants are markets for refrigeration: units,
new dairy equipment, glass and steel pipelines, pumps
and other industrial equipment.
Dairy farms constantly need chemicals, feeds, ma- _
chinery and other commodities.
Packaging the millions of pounds of dairy foods sold
daily calls for purchases of glass and paper containers,
Dairy farming becomes a yital and integral part of a
community's economic structure. Those actively engaged
in the dairy business are themselves a ready market for
service and products.

before a sample of such feed is sent, a veterinarian should be

the feed is rarely ever to blame. oe
If the veterinarian decides that it is a toxic substance, he i
should indicate what he thinks it is. Otherwise, the chemis-

Mrs. Floyd Major,
in Georgia:
Report Earnings Correctly
To Earn Social Security
Social security payments to a farm
worker and his family can be assured
only through the correct reporting of
earnings.
Farm operators who hire farm work-
ers must keep adequate records. The
name and social security number of every
employee hired should be recorded to-
gether with a record of his time and pay.
A report must be filed at the end of each
year and the social security tax paid for
any employee who was paid at least $150
in the year or who worked for 20 days or _
more on an hourly basis.
Each farm operator is also required to
report to Internal Revenue Service the
name, address, and employers identifica-
tion number of each crew leader or farm
labor contractor who furnished him with
agricultural workers. The report should
be submitted on the reverse of Form 943
(Annual Report of Agricultural Work-
ers). To help farm operators comply with
this Internal Revenue regulation, the fol-
lowing suggestions are offered:
1. Note the crew leaders employer
identification number along with his
name and home address on your records.
2. If the crew leader has lost his num-
ber, refer him to the nearest social secur-
ity or Internal Revenue office and make
every effort to see that he goes there.
3. If the crew leader never had an em-
ployers identification number, have him
complete Form SS-4A, Agricultural Em-
ployers Application for Identification
Number. The application may be obtain-
ed from the Internal Revenue or social
security district office.
These rules are necessary to protect-
the farm operator if the crew leader does
not report his employees for social se-
curity purposes and the employees claim.
