These two representatives are also re-
presentatives in the Georgia Legislature
respectively for Colquitt and Coffee
County.
Representatives Newton and Milhol-
lin are to be congratulated for their stand
in the face of such odds. As a result of
their protest and the many, many Geor-
gia tobacco farmers who wrote letters,
sent wires and phoned protests, hearings
are now being held in the Southern States
to determine the fate of tobacco treated
with MH-30.
If Georgia farmers had not been so
prompt and aggressive in their stand
against this recommendation, it is prob-
able that Secretary Freeman would have
recommendation and it
would have passed into law without these
hearings. oe
Since learning of the recommenda-
tion of the National Tobacco Industry Ad-
visory Committee to Secretary Freeman,
Ihave made an effort to determine if tech-
nical personnel of the USDA have any
authoritative evidence which proves that
MH-30 has an adverse affect on tobacco.
I have thus far been unable to obtain

any conclusive evidence that this chemi-
cal reduces the quality of tobacco,
Georgia tobacco farmers feel strong-
ly, and in this opinion I concur, that MH-
30 has no adverse affect on old time to-
bacco varieties grown by Georgia farmers
and therefore, it should not be discounted
on this basis as has been recommended
by the committee.
It is a known fact that buyers show
great preference for type 14 flu-cured to-
bacco (most of which has been treated
with MH-30) with very little of this type
tobacco going into that stabilization pro-
gram, \
Georgians are fortunate to have two
able representatives on the National To-
baeco Industry Advisory Committee. This
is especially true since Georgia tobacco
farmers have the unique ability to con-
tinue to produce the old time tobacco
variety which are so popular with the
buyers. This also makes Georgia tobacco
problems unique in that other tobacco
producing states grow varieties unlike
Georgia tobacco and, therefore, do not
have our problems.
